Prosecutors say the pipeline was used to pumped at least 6,200 litres of vodka into Estonia. That's 1,637 gallons, and it's enough booze to warrant about $57,000 euros in duty taxes.

Pakistan Turns On Their Taliban September 5, 2008
merrie
by merrie  9-12-2008
Because TTP groups have long been involved in criminal activities, they have developed ties with major gangsters in the region. These guys want to maintain some contacts with the Islamic radicals, just in case, and help out by sharing their smuggling and money laundering contacts in the Persian Gulf. So for the government to really hurt the TTP financially, they will have to go after the criminal infrastructure the Taliban is allied with. That won't happen, because the widespread corruption in Pakistan includes a lot of connections, and cooperation, between government officials and major gangsters. So "freezing bank accounts" may sound impressive, but means less than other measures, like roadblocks on the major roads linking TTP controlled areas with the outside world. This is something the government has been using more of late, and it leads to many battles. The Taliban will constantly attack the checkpoints, and truck drivers will attempt, to bribe their way past the troops.

San Francisco Fights Border Crime?
merrie
by merrie  8-6-2008    1
San Francisco received more SWBPI grant money in 2006 than Los Angeles County or San Diego County which do have bona fide border problems. As a result, we found that all of the SWBPI reimbursements submitted by San Francisco were not supported. In other words, San Franciso officials apparently submitted made-up data to document the expenditure of funds since it had apparently no records for "real" cases. Perhaps there are no "real" cases because the official policy of the City is not ask anyone if they are in the country illegally. According to the San Francisco Chronicle Federal officials say they will ask San Francisco to repay the $5.4 million the city has received as part of the program, but they have not determined how to go about it. This audit comes on the heels of a TV, radio and billboard public relations effort by the City to encourage illegal aliens to relocate to San Francisco where they can receive schooling, health care and other benefits.

Calderon has made crushing drug cartels the centerpiece of his presidency but violence has grown since he sent out some 25,000 troops and police officers against them. Medina Mora said higher prices for cocaine and methamphetamines on U.S. streets showed the crackdown was shutting off supply routes and hurting cartel revenues.

Khan Nuke Smuggling Network Has Ties to Pentagon & "Israeli Elements"
blueridge
by blueridge  6-15-2008    5
This is what Drudge and the Wash Post do not tell you about the Khan network: 2000-2001: Nuclear Proliferation Network Penetrates Pentagon with Help of Senior Officials A nuclear proliferation network operating in the US penetrates the Pentagon and related institutions, according to FBI whistleblower Sibel Edmonds. The network, which is run by Pakistani scientist A. Q. Khan, but also includes Turkish and Israeli elements, is allegedly helped by a number of senior officials in the Pentagon. Edmonds will later say: “The provided lists of potential moles from Pentagon-related institutions who had access to databases concerning this information... One of the Pentagon figures that is a target of the FBI investigation is Larry Franklin, an analyst who will be jailed in 2006 for passing US defense information to lobbyists According to Edmonds, Franklin is “one of the top people providing information and packages during 2000 and 2001.”[/quo

Change "He Should Believe In"
merrie
by merrie  6-11-2008    4
He would become a responsible voice within his party by challenging his constituents to embrace progress in Iraq. Using his considerable influence to rein in the reflexive and poisonous antiwar rhetoric that has become the Democratic party’s standard rallying cry against Republicans, he would seek to alleviate the bitter divisions that plague our country. Unfortunately, Sen. Obama has not been that kind of candidate. Instead, he has chosen the far easier path of exploiting the existing currents of public opinion for political gain. In his speeches, he downplays the gains achieved through the surge and dismisses as “spin” all evidence of progress, all the while repeating his call for a withdrawal of all U.S. combat troops within sixteen months of becoming president, no matter the conditions on the ground. Even worse, Sen. Obama’s rhetoric on the Iraq war is beginning to jeopardize his stated goal of repairing alliances that he claims are in tatters.

Money and sex rule over law and order. You can put a man in uniform, but that won't make him good, only gives him a cover or even opportunity. Amazing article documenting wide-spread corruption. Just another example that Americans should be more concerned about internal corruptions and crimes than foreign enemies.

RIP Irena Sendler - Lost Nobel Peace Prize to Al Gore
willhelm
by willhelm  5-13-2008    1
"Mrs. Sendler used her contacts at orphanages and convents to keep Jewish children safe until the war's end, often under Christianized names. To alert nuns to a new group of children ready for pick up, she could write, "I have clothing for the convent." The intention was to return all the children to their parents, although the death rate of the adult population made the task largely impossible. But for years Mrs. Sendler guarded the real names of the children and their parents, writing them on tissue paper and burying the lists in jars under an apple tree at an associate's home. "

Polish Holocaust hero dies at age 98
thekay
by thekay  5-12-2008    1
Yad Vashem Chairman Avner Shalev said Sender's "courageous activities rescuing Jews during the Holocaust serve as a beacon of light to the world, inspiring hope and restoring faith in the innate goodness of mankind." Despite the Yad Vashem honor, Sendler was largely forgotten in her homeland until recent years. She came to the world's attention in 2000 when a group of schoolgirls from Uniontown, Kan., wrote a short play about her called "Life in a Jar." It went on to garner international attention, and has been performed more than 200 times in the United States, Canada and Poland. Sendler, born Irena Krzyzanowska, said she lived according to her physician father's teachings, arguing that "people can be only divided into good or bad; their race, religion, nationality don't matter."
