POPSIsrael Cruelty Towards Palestinian Children. The children are held in solitary confinement, in tiny cells, like the "Lockup", a cell 1.5m X 1.5m, or the "Closet", a cell the height of a person, in which one can stand but not sit or move, or the "Grave", a box that's closed from the top and measures 1m X 60 cm with a depth of about 80 cm. Good thing kids are flexible, eh? And the children are tried by a military tribunal. You can bet the Israelis don't treat their own kids like this. Wonder what kind of effect such treatment will have on this generation of Palestinian kids?

POPSGlenn Beck's '9-12' Logo based on Communist and Socialist designs More: Turnout for the 9-12 Project's Saturday march on Washington was a bust; 30,000 protesters signed up in advance (MSNBC reporter David Shuster tweeted that D.C. park police called that figure "generous"). But even if three times that many actually showed up, the number would fall far short of the hundreds of thousands (and even millions) claimed to be planning to attend. Even in that reduced crowd, however, surely someone recognized how odd the right-wing gathering's left-wing logo was. Maybe Beck will explain. Sort of.

POPS"First Queen of Hip-Hop" gets her Ph.D. – on Warner Brothers' dime
Congratulations, Dr. Shante! More: She eventually cashed in, earning a Ph.D. in psychology from Cornell to the tune of $217,000 - all covered by the label. But getting Warner Music to cough up the dough was a battle. "They kept stumbling over their words, and they didn't have an exact reason why they were telling me no," Shante said. She figured Warner considered the clause a throwaway, never believing a teen mom in public housing would attend college… Shante found an arm-twisting ally in Marguerita Grecco, the dean at Marymount Manhattan College. Shante showed her the contract, and the dean let her attend classes for free while pursuing the money. "I told Dean Grecco that either I'm going to go here or go to the streets, so I need your help," Shante recalls. "She said, 'We're going to make them pay for this.'" Grecco submitted and resubmitted the bills to the label, which finally agreed to honor the contract when Shante threatened to go public with the story.

POPSKamikaze Planet Some as-yet-unknown manifestation of tidal forces could prolong the planet's life by as much as 500 million years. That's because the close and fierce interaction between two large and essentially gaseous bodies could produce turbulence or other effects that could somehow cancel out WASP-18b's orbital deterioration. Astronomers may know whether that's happening within a decade or so, Collier Cameron says. "It's the find of a lifetime," says astronomer Douglas Hamilton of the University of Maryland, College Park. "The beauty of this discovery is that we will be able to know within 5 to 10 years,"Hamilton says. "I think that it could go either way--which makes it very exciting." Very interesting!
