True tests of leadership
bmeuppls
by bmeuppls  Yesterday 10:10 PM
Continuing the clip: "Senator Obama made a different choice. He not only opposed the new strategy, but actually tried to prevent us from implementing it. He didn't just advocate defeat, he tried to legislate it. When his efforts failed, he continued to predict the failure of our troops. As our soldiers and Marines prepared to move into Baghdad neighborhoods and Anbari villages, Senator Obama predicted that their efforts would make the sectarian violence in Iraq worse, not better. Three weeks after Senator Obama voted to deny funding for our troops in the field, General Ray Odierno launched the first major combat operations of the surge. Senator Obama declared defeat one month later: "My assessment is that the surge has not worked and we will not see a different report eight weeks from now." His assessment was popular at the time. But it couldn't have been more wrong." And more telling... he always chooses the politically expedient answer.

I’m a Modern Man--CLASSIC GEORGE CARLIN
papananook
by papananook  7-24-2008
 I'm in the moment, on the edge, over the top, but under the radar. A high-concept, low-profile, medium-range ballistic missionary. A street-wise smart bomb. A top-gun bottom-feeder. I wear power ties, I tell power lies, I take power naps, I run victory laps. I'm a totally ongoing, big-foot, slam-dunk rainmaker with a pro-active outreach. A raging workaholic, a working rageaholic; out of rehab and in denial. I've got a personal trainer, a personal shopper, a personal assistant, and a personal agenda. You can't shut me up; you can't dumb me down. 'Cause I'm tireless, and I'm wireless. I'm an alpha-male on beta-blockers. I'm a non-believer, I'm an over-achiever; Laid-back and fashion-forward. Up-front, down-home; low-rent, high-maintenance. I'm super-sized, long-lasting, high-definition, fast-acting, oven-ready and built to last. A hands-on, footloose, knee-jerk head case; prematurely post-traumatic, and I have a love child who sends me hate-mail. But I'm

What Do Your Genes Say About You? The Future of Personal Genomics
Mohir
by Mohir  7-23-2008
The company 23andMe announced its DNA testing service last month in San Diego. You might think such a comprehensive analysis would costs thousands, but the process is actually relatively affordable. For less than $1,000 customers are able to learn virtually everything science currently knows about their biological code. For those wary of needles, you’ll be comforted to know that the DNA is retrieved conveniently and painlessly from a home mail-in saliva test kit.

Hurricane Dolly Bears Down on Texas
Wisco
by Wisco  7-23-2008    9
Dolly is described as a "slow-moving" storm, meaning that there may be more damage than would normally be expected from a Category 2, mostly in the form of flooding. LiveScience.com : Flooding, which can result from both torrential rains and the ocean surf a storm can push ashore, is what officials in Texas were most concerned about after Dolly made landfall as a Category 2 hurricane at 9 am EDT on Wednesday. Residents of the Rio Grande Valley have been warned of potential severe flooding and possible levee breaks. The National Hurricane Center predicted that Dolly could drop a total of 6 to 10 inches (15 to 25 centimeters) of rainfall in the next few days, with some isolated spots potentially getting soaked by up to 15 inches.

What Do Your Genes Say About You? The Future of Personal Genomics

Less than $1000 to have your genes checked. A maybe if you can face bad results. Just hope they don't become part of your work/insurance/medical insurance details required. And the lack of ethics in business would leave one wondering about the results cited by some insurance test.

Watermelon: Three Juicy Benefits
merrie
by merrie  7-23-2008    2
Watermelon: Best Not Chilled Ice-cold watermelon on a steamy summer day really hits the spot. But you'll be best served by keeping it on your countertop until cutting time. Whole watermelons stored at room temperature deliver more cell-protecting antioxidants (specifically lycopene and beta carotene) than refrigerated or freshly picked melons. Here's why A Chilling Effect After it's picked, watermelon continues to ripen and build up antioxidants. Cold temperatures appear to cut this process short. So leave your watermelon out, as long as you haven't sliced it. After it's cut, it should be stored in the refrigerator for food-safety reasons. And don't forget to wash your watermelon before cutting it to avoid this.

Cheap bad credit unsecured loans:viable solution for financial proble
henrydouglas
by henrydouglas  7-23-2008
A fund shortage during an emergency is a devastating situation but not uncommon, since I am sure many of us must have faced it. A timely loan can save the day but securing such a loan, needs careful consideration. Any individual with a bad credit history to his name and no property to be placed as collateral against a loan, would find it difficult to get a convenient loan option for his needs. Also, if a lender were to provide a specific loan for this category of borrowers, it would come with a high rate of interest. However, if you are looking at the ideal solution for your financial troubles, then you could very well opt for the smart choice of cheap bad credit unsecured loans, that are offered by some reliable financial lenders.

Why Does The Government Keep Protecting People from Their Stupidity
cmstratton
by cmstratton  7-21-2008
These credit rules are just the latest in a long line of our government feeling the need to protect consumers from their own ignorance and stupidity. I'll be the first to admit credit card rules and fees are difficult to understand. But consumers should be smart enough to know this, and not get in situations where they spent more than they can afford on their cards and end up paying these fees. Pay your bills on time and late fees aren't an issue. Don't charge more than you can afford to pay back at the end of the month and finance charges aren't an issue. There's no need for additional government legislation around this. If the gov really wants to spend our taxpayer money wisely, spend it on education programs to teach people how to be smart with their money.

Me And My Girls
debbyski
by debbyski  7-20-2008    3
"But was it really all thus? When memory is called to answer, it often answers back with deception. How is it that almost every warm bar stool contains a hero, a star of his own epic, who is the sum of his amazing stories? If I said I was a fat thug who beat up women and sold bad coke, would you like my story? What if instead I wrote that I was a recovered addict who obtained sole custody of my twin girls, got us off welfare and raised them by myself, even though I had a little touch of cancer? Now we’re talking. Both are equally true, but as a member of a self-interpreting species, one that fights to keep disharmony at a remove, I’m inclined to mention my tenderhearted attentions as a single parent before I get around to the fact that I hit their mother when we were together. We tell ourselves that we lie to protect others, but the self usually comes out looking damn good in the process. "

Bee smart, or how human decide.
balthazarus
by balthazarus  7-19-2008    1
The results were similar when the numerals 3 and 4 were replaced with easily distinguishable clouds of 30 and 60 dots. But when the numerals were replaced with clouds of 30 or 40 dots - making it much more difficult to distinguish between the two - subjects veered towards the more certain outcome. The researchers subjected honeybees to similar trials, using the bees' sense of smell and 2 microliter drops of sugar solution payoffs of varying concentrations. The bees tended towards the risky strategy only when their choice was easily discernable, paralleling their human counterparts.

Keep the marketing out...
Lara Nieberding
by Lara Nieberding  7-19-2008
A professional organization I belong to had an impromtu meetup in Lively. Yes, unexpected guests arrived and my cartoon was kissed without permission. My cartoon was also invited to watch streaming web content of a "too polite to repeat here" subject. I had participated in the meetup with high hopes that Lively might be the place to hang out with professionals in a virtually social setting. Guess What? I like hanging out in virtual worlds because it is an escape from the barrage of marketing at me. I have to endure advertising and marketing messages on the radio, on TV, cable, satelite...the Internet is one huge bombardment of marketing messages. I want virtual worlds to be a respite from marketing. I want a place to have a 3d representation of myself where I can collaborate with others. My advice: KEEP YOUR MARKETING OUT OF VIRTUAL WORLDS.
