POPS2008 Optibikes The technology finally caught up with our dreams. The plus side of our declining economy is that we are now faced with making smart choices. A robust economy lines the pockets of those who know how to sell to those who only spend. With the dollar stretch shrinking the buyers are having to look at their spending like never before. The declining economy is making everyone take a second look. It has stimulated conversation among those for too long mute. The questions being raised are, "What have I been doing? How the hell did we get here? Did I really contribute to this situation? What can I do now to better this place I share with so many who have even less? Bicycling is only one option of so many already out there. More ideas are needed but for those lacking in creativity all needs being done is to look for the solutions already in place and then take action. Being smart is fun. It can also save you money and clean up the environment so you can continue to enjoy it.

POPSElectric Cars ! Is it the real answer ? while I believe that we need to do something, have we really given this the full thought it deserves. Then when looking for energy for this the screams will be for more nuclear power source.

POPSMe And My Girls "But was it really all thus? When memory is called to answer, it often answers back with deception. How is it that almost every warm bar stool contains a hero, a star of his own epic, who is the sum of his amazing stories? If I said I was a fat thug who beat up women and sold bad coke, would you like my story? What if instead I wrote that I was a recovered addict who obtained sole custody of my twin girls, got us off welfare and raised them by myself, even though I had a little touch of cancer? Now we’re talking. Both are equally true, but as a member of a self-interpreting species, one that fights to keep disharmony at a remove, I’m inclined to mention my tenderhearted attentions as a single parent before I get around to the fact that I hit their mother when we were together. We tell ourselves that we lie to protect others, but the self usually comes out looking damn good in the process. "

POPSTom Friedman calls for an "energy internet" Once again, Tom Friedman calls it like it is. This is a smart piece that i recommend everyone read. Despite a lot talk about green energy, i'm still shocked that the U.S. government isn't more focused on it and committed to aiding its development. I guess we can only hope that China and Europe lead the way.

POPS10 Ways We Get the Odds Wrong And the two last ones: IX. We Love Sunlight But Fear Nuclear Power Why "natural" risks are easier to accept. X. We Should Fear Fear Itself Why worrying about risk is itself risky. Though the odds of dying in a terror attack like 9/11 or contracting Ebola are infinitesimal, the effects of chronic stress caused by constant fear are significant. Studies have found that the more people were exposed to media portrayals of the 2001 attacks, the more anxious and depressed they were. Chronically elevated stress harms our physiology, says Ropeik. "It interferes with the formation of bone, lowers immune response, increases the likelihood of clinical depression and diabetes, impairs our memory and our fertility, and contributes to long-term cardiovascular damage and high blood pressure."

POPSPoets Will Celebrate Al Gore 1,000 Years From Now Gore spotlights a number of these companies, including Smart Car, Amyris Biotechnologies, Altra Biofuels, Mascoma (cellulosic ethanol), Great Point Energy (biomass-to-gas and carbon capture technology), Altarock Energy (geothermal energy), Bloomenergy (fuel cells), Missole (solar technology) and Ausra (solar technology). Flashing their corporate logos on the screen, Gore states, “Here are just a few of the investments that I personally think make sense. I have a stake in these….” Putting aside the questionable legality of Gore’s promotion of his investments -- conduct that could very well be contrary to federal and state securities laws that forbid an unlicensed individual from promoting unregistered securities to the public -- it seems that it’s important to change the laws so that Gore can expand the $100 million-plus fortune he’s already accumulated since leaving public service in 2001.

POPSSmart Car Puts 'High Level of Safety Into Very Small Package' The institute's test* follows government findings that gave the Smart four out of five stars on front-end crash testing on the driver's side. While the car's small-is-cool image and 36-mpg gas thriftiness made the timing of its entry in the U.S. market fortunate, safety has remained the question mark. The new crash results are "really exciting," says Smart USA President Dave Schembri. "It really validates that small can be safe." About 7,000 Smart cars are plying American roads since the French-made car went on sale earlier this year at list prices ranging from $11,590 to $16,590. Smart USA is part of Detroit's Penske Automotive Group pag, which struck a deal to import the little cars that are already sold throughout the world under a deal with Smart's parent, Germany's Daimler. Because it lacks front-end crush space, Smart relies more on the car's seat belts and air bags to protect occupants.

POPSThe Nerd Girls: Smart, Techie and Feminine
"These girl geeks aren't social misfits; their identities don't hinge on outsider status. They may love all things sci-tech, but first and foremost they are girls—and they've made that part of their appeal...However they choose to geek out, they consciously tweak the two chief archetypes of geeks: that they're unattractive outcasts, and that they're male. " "Forty years ago women made up just 3 percent of science and engineering jobs; now they make up about 20 percent. That sounds promising, until you consider that women earn 56 percent of the degrees in those fields. A recent Center for Work-Life Policy study found that 52 percent of women leave those jobs, with 63 percent saying they experienced workplace harassment and more than half believing they needed to "act like a man" in order to succeed. In the past, women dealt with that reality in two ways: some buried their femininity, while others simply gave up their techie interests to appear more feminine." Go, girls!

POPSJob Security: watch out for 800-chacha I was reading an email from a coworker at the public library I work at and it was about 800-chacha. Similar to Google411, but more on random information you might be wondering about. If you have an iPhone or Smart Phone, you could look it up yourself but if you do not have that (trust me, I'm one of those people - my phone is 5 years old) then this might help you. I am not sure if it will do away with the need for the reference librarian but it does add more competition I suppose. However, they said school librarians were not necessary and now, with integrating technology as well as assisting with curriculum development, school librarians are still relevant.

POPSSelling Music From INSIDE a Game This is a smart and creative move that doesn't even sound like it will distract from the game play which is key. I'm going to be very interested to see what kind of listens this generates and sales.

POPSJezebel's response to WP article by Charlotte Allen I love Twitter. I get exposed to things that I am not exposed to. Here is a great response (paragraph by paragraph) to Charlotte Allen's OP-ED piece on Sunday for the Washington Post. "Tongue-In-Cheek"? What a load of bullshit!?! There are lots of responses and all I can say is that article (if you want to call it that) is offensive and full of shit. I really hate it when women hate themselves. Hum, I wonder what Charlotte Allen is thinking or is she going to respond? I love that the editor of the WP responded for her.

POPSRetire early: Live beneath your means DLM offers 10 suggestions. Here's an 11th and a 12th. 11. Buy Used: Lots of stuff on Craigslist and other resale venues is actually new. Bought and never used! 12. Shop Freecycle / Fullcircles / ReUseIt / or ANY of the gifting / reuse networks springing up all around the world! . Paying nothing means you don't have buy with after tax $$. And a lot of the stuff given away is also unused - new stuff; bought and never used! Think of all the money you can save. Makes it possible to either work less; or retire early. /e
