Consolations in a Dark Age
willhelm
by willhelm  6-5-2009    4
"But then there's the web. For 99 cents you can get a world-class performance of Mozart's Ave Verum Corpus. Or the Mormon Tabernacle Choir singing the Battle Hymn of the Republic. Or a Shakespeare Sonnet beautifully recited by a great actor. Or Jan Peerce singing the Jewish cantorial liturgy. On YouTube you don't even need 99 pennies. You can get Borodin's elegiac String Quartet No. 2, the slow movement. Or Beethoven's 9th, the famous Choral Movement, performed by the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. The Sistine Chapel on Wikipedia; and with a few more finger strokes we can find out what the French Renaissance composer Josquin learned in the Sistine Chapel in 1494. Who says Western Civ is dead? This is absolutely unprecedented. Today more of us can more easily access the best of 20 centuries of Western Civilization -- the real thing, not the college course -- than ever before. And people are doing it all over the world -- as well as the usual dreck that passes for pop music thes

Bush 'may convert to Catholicism'
righthand
by righthand  6-15-2008    6
Yesterday the Vatican was seething at rumours that there was much more to it than protocol: George Bush, lifelong Methodist, was about to convert. The Vatican differs from the White House on immigration and the death penalty but on other issues including stem cell research, gay marriage and abortion there has been, as the Catholic daily L'Avvenire put it, "total harmony." .. Independent He'll have to become a Christian first, won't he?

Was the Sistine Ceiling a Papal Insult?
boozich
by boozich  4-28-2008
look at the shape that frames God, and the flowing fabric that falls down from it do you actually see a spinal cord? "Now, what's interesting is in Kabbalah we have different kinds of wisdom," said Doliner. "The right side of the human brain in Kabbalah means wisdom chokhma." And God is appearing from the right side of the brain in that fresco. How about the fresco of Adam, Eve and the serpent in the garden? Most depictions of the Garden of Eden show an apple tree, but not on the Sistine ceiling. As in an ancient Jewish tradition, the tree is a fig tree. Blech finds it another hidden message. "I think this is one of these powerful proofs, that not only did Michelangelo know Jewish texts, but he felt it important to incorporate the ideas of these texts into some of these frescoes."

Charlton Heston Dies At Home With His Wife Lydia By His Side
merrie
by merrie  4-6-2008
And the common mistake, even of the Old Bolsheviks, was to suppose that following a set of principles was better following fashion. Those who wonder whether Heston had wandered off should ask themselves whether Martin Luther King, had he lived, might also have remarked to the nation's First Black President that ''America doesn't trust you with our 21-year-old daughters, and we sure, Lord, don't trust you with our guns.'' After all, King was a Republican and nobody remembers that either. April 6 (Bloomberg) -- Charlton Heston, the Oscar-winning actor who played some of the most famous roles in Hollywood history including Moses parting the Red Sea, Michelangelo painting the Sistine Chapel and Ben-Hur driving a Roman chariot, has died, his family said. He died at home with his wife of 64 years, Lydia, by his side, his family said late yesterday. The statement said he was 84, while the New York Times reported his date of birth as Oct. 4 1924 and age as 83. bloomberg.com
