POPSNanny State Goes To War Anyway, some targeted warnings should probably be sufficient. Sort of like “Government Warning: Smoking in combat can be hazardous to your health.” Or … Government Warning: Tobacco is the other leading cause of chest wounds that suck. Government Warning: Dip sinks lips. Government Warning: Hey GI, cancer has you in its crosshairs. Government Warning: Good luck claiming your emphysema is service-related. Government Warning: First, second and third man on the match get their lungs removed! Government Warning: Cancer, the over-the-horizon killer. Government Warning: Smoking, the silent but deadly way of killing a man they didn’t teach you in basic training. Government Warning: Tobacco, when you absolutely, positively want to die horribly in 25 years. Hey, those aren’t bad, though the last one may sound like good odds in some circumstances. I didn’t exactly set out to do some Pentagon wonk’s work for him, but are there any grants out there for this kind of th

POPSGermany 'not silent' on stabbing
Ms Sherbini's husband was attacked by the assailant as he tried to defend his wife and was also accidentally shot by German police. He is in hospital in critical condition. This is an abhorrent deed, one that has left us all dismayed and shocked Thomas Steg German government spokesman The Egyptian media have expressed outrage, asking how the incident was allowed to happen and dubbing Ms Sherbini "the martyr of the Hijab", in reference to her Islamic headscarf. The German government was criticised for what was seen to be a muted reaction. On Tuesday, spokesman Thomas Steg defended the government's reaction, saying Germany had "not been silent", and that early details about the case had not been sufficiently clear for a "spontaneous reaction". "This is an abhorrent deed, one that has left us all dismayed and shocked," he said. He added that Chancellor Merkel would discuss the incident with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak at this week's Group of Eight summit in It

POPSDear Iranians: Don't Count on the United States Governments from Asia to Europe voiced concern about the violence that erupted Monday during rallies protesting the hardliner Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's re-election, with US President Barack Obama saying he had "deep concerns" while also not wanting to meddle in Iran's affairs. But while some governments tried to avoid taking sides, Sarkozy said the unrest was a direct result of Ahmadinejad's failings in his first term. "The extent of the fraud is proportional to the violent reaction," said the French leader.

POPSChildren of Chernobyl Nuclear Accident It's been a long time since Chernobyl spewed nuclear radiation. Children are STILL affected by this nuclear accident. Hard for me to believe nuclear energy is "green" as public relations officers claim.

POPSThe hunt for Sumatra's killer tigers
But why was a logging company given permission to operate in the tigers' dwindling territory? "We only found out there were tigers in the area after the investors started chopping down the trees," he said. "Now we have more regulations to protect the tigers' habitat. But the problem is that the tigers are already disturbed and angry." As in many parts of Indonesia's vast territory, regulations are one thing - enforcing them is quite another. There could be as few as 250 tigers left here, but Sumatra's forest is now so depleted it is struggling to support even this tiny number. Back at the attack site, ranger Nurazman Nurdin sounded dejected. He told me there was no long-term plan - the rangers were just trying to keep the humans and tigers apart. It is dangerous work - and not a job he enjoys. But Sumatra's tiger catchers are up against more than just hungry tigers. They're battling the world's demand for Indonesia's forests, and the timber and paper and palm oi

POPSArmy Orders Pain Ray Trucks; New Report Shows 'Potential for Death'
"Dr. Altmann describes the Active Denial beam in some detail, noting that it will not be completely uniform; anyone unlucky enough to be caught in the center will experience more heating than someone at the edge. And perhaps more significant is his thorough analysis of the heating it produces -- and the cumulative effect if the target does not have the chance to cool down between exposures. In U.S. military tests, a fifteen-second delay between exposures was strictly observed; this may not happen when the ADS is used for real. "As a consequence, the ADS provides the technical possibility to produce burns of second and third degree. Because the beam of diameter 2 m and above is wider than human size, such burns would occur over considerable parts of the body, up to 50% of its surface. Second- and third-degree burns covering more than 20% of the body surface are potentially life-threatening – due to toxic tissue-decay products and increased sensitivity to infection – and require i

POPSWoman's Health: Ovarian Cancer - xxxx news? “The statement is a move in the right direction. Its chief contribution might be to improve communication between women and their doctors. To maximise its chance of success, it ought to be combined with other efforts, especially increased funding for ovarian cancer research, which has been declining for the past several years; large prospective trials of early detection methods; ongoing education and awareness campaigns for the public and professionals; and development of standardised diagnostic algorithms for the disease.”

POPSWhat's up with all these products from China being contaminated. This trend is becoming obvious. If you read the whole of this short article it gives a step by step scenario of what could have happened to cause the same contaminated product to reappear. Frankly this seems to be getting a bit obvious with all this garbage coming out of China. Their unemployment rate has likely been lowered by becoming the main supplier of deadly products for the American. While our unemployment is skyrocketing along side our risk of death by overseas products. I'm getting disgusted. And please. If you're Chinese and living in the states don't take this as a jab by someone that is prejudiced. I'm not a moron...you are just as vulnerable! Of course, unless you purchase all of your food ( as well as dog and cat food), and hygene products directly from China. Then again, they're reaping the 'benefits' too. I'm curious about what is in store for those who attend the Olympic games.

POPSLost Chances For Survival My mother has had one TIA and one very small stoke, just recently. She was very lucky to be able to get the TPA shot for her first TIA, but missed the window of opportunity on her second small stroke. Don't ignore hypertension; pull out all the stops to make your life more healthy and inform yourself of the symptoms of stroke.
