POPSThe way the brain buys Scientists used to assume that emotion and rationality were opposed to each other, but Antonio Damasio, now professor of neuroscience at the University of Southern California, has found that people who lose the ability to perceive or experience emotions as the result of a brain injury find it hard or impossible to make any decisions at all. They can’t shop. ergo we shop with our hearts..;-)

POPSPaper Bags or Plastic Bags? Everything You Need to Know So, while it's good to have the alternative (and to recognize the innovation it represents), bioplastics aren't quite ready to save us from the paper or plastic debate. Paper bags or plastic bags: the conclusion Both paper and plastic bags require lots and lots of resources and energy, and proper recycling requires due diligence from both consumer and municipal waste collector or private recycling company, so there are a lot of variables that can lead to low recycling rates. Ultimately, neither paper nor plastic bags are the best choice; we think choosing reusable canvas bags instead is the way to go. From an energy standpoint, according to this Australian study, canvas bags are 14 times better than plastic bags and 39 times better than paper bags, assuming that canvas bags get a good workout and are used 500 times during their life cycle. Happy shopping!

POPSThe science of shopping IT MAY have occurred to you, during the course of a dismal trawl round a supermarket indistinguishable from every other supermarket you have ever been into, to wonder why they are all the same. The answer is more sinister than depressing. It is not because the companies that operate them lack imagination. It is because they are all versed in the science of persuading people to buy things—a science that, thanks to technological advances, is beginning to unlock the innermost secrets of the consumer’s mind

POPSRemnants of Childhood - do you have any? "...there's a brand-spankin' new Walmart that opened near me with mint-condition shopping carts and a fresh, smooth parking lot with a ever-so-slight down hill slope to the cars from the store. A few jogging steps is all I need to roll myself and my groceries from the front doors all the way to the far end of the lot."

POPSWe'll all be citizens of virtual worlds What is the point of all this? It is quite likely that it will be a natural thing for future generations to meet their friends in worlds such as these, where they can watch the same music or videos while chatting to each other. And if that is where youngsters will be hanging out, then brands and media, including newspapers, will have to be there. Other life-mimicking worlds about to be released include shopping malls such as themall.tv, which aims to emulate an entire shopping mall with scores of high street shops. It claims to have signed up 500 brands.

POPSExplosion Kills Several in Manila Mall That mall is near our office. HR did a headcount when news of the explosion came. Our office is located at the center of the business district so we're used to rallies being staged in the vicinity every few months... Disasters like this don't happen everyday though. I hope those who were hurt are being treated well.

POPSGeorge Bush's Hotmail Inbox [P] I'd clipped this long ago, when I was just a newbie, so it wasn't poppable. I think perhaps we all could use a few good chuckles to get the year of to a good start, so here's a pop version.

POPSUnderground City? The Future of Amsterdam Dutch engineers have proposed building an underground city 6 floors under Amsterdam's picturesque canals, which would be drained section by section during construction. It is both feasible and sustainable, creating a city beneath the city is not futuristic, it may be a necessity in this day and age. And what will this city hold? Parking, shopping and "leisure". Should they be digging up Amsterdam for parking and shopping, OR should they have added public transit and bike lanes instead? Construction could last up to 20 years.

POPSAmerica used Chess, not torture, on the Nazis Does this mean Nazis are nice people who should be treated nicely? No. Nazis suck and espouse hate and violence. What this means is that the professionals understand that torture does not provide good intelligence . Torture is cruelty as cruelty, as intimidation, as a message to others who hear about it and think about resisting what we want. Torture is a political tool, not a professional intelligence gathering one

POPSJust Say No Lemme tell you how simple my holiday shopping has been for years. I give both my girls and my Mom money at Christmas. I tell them to wait until the after holiday sales and spend it then if they need stuff or use it for what they need. My husband and I never exchange gifts cause we get what we need all year round. There is no need to go into debt for the holidays and all my friends understand that we don't need to buy stuff to make each other happy; just telling someone you love them is more than enough :)

POPSFBI: Al Qaeda May Strike U.S. Shopping Malls
Then at the end of the article this: "We have no credible, specific information suggesting an imminent attack," a DHS official said. More propaganda (from Brian Ross at ABC who appears to be the real perps favorite parrot) to "remind you" that "jihadists want to kill us every day", and the FBI has known this "for two years" but its only being reported now, because it is timely to do so. Meanwhile the Office of Homeland tyranny says "we have no credible threat" information. It would be too convenient that terrorists would attack the U.S. now when 70 percent disagree with the war, impeachment against Cheney has been introduced, and Bush's ratings at an all time low. Who would benefit most from a terrorist attack in the U.S.? Who and what agenda benefited most from 9/11? Meanwhile shootings at schools are way up, violent crimes within every state, even family murder-suicides, while motor vehicle accidents kill tens of thousands. Americans should fear each oth
