POPSOfficials May Evacuate New Orleans as Gustav Nears If a Category 3 or stronger hurricane comes within 60 hours of the city, New Orleans plans to institute a mandatory evacuation order. Unlike Katrina, there will be no massive shelter at the Superdome, a plan designed to encourage residents to leave. Instead, the state has arranged for buses and trains to take people to safety. Since the storm (Katrina), the Army Corps of Engineers has spent billions of dollars to improve the levee system, but because of two quiet hurricane seasons, the flood walls have never been tested. Floodgates have been installed on drainage canals to stop any storm surge from entering the city, and levees have been raised and in many places strengthened with concrete. Scientists cautioned that the storm's track and intensity were difficult to predict several days in advance. The Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals planned to move animals to shelters elsewhere in the state and in Texas.

POPSOrganization reiterates plan for homeless during DNC Poverty must be seen. This is disgusting! If Obama truly wants change, he will address this issue along with the concentration looking prison cages being set up for protesters. Remember the Boston Massacre? That was a protest and we would not be here as Americans without that act of protest. We taunted the British into violence and even into killing to garner support for the cause. Now you get arrested for holding a sign. If the DNC had any balls they would invite the homeless in and ask them what there "American Dream" is.

POPSAn Underground City Beneath Beijing, Why? Beijing's Underground Hideout With Khrushchev and the Soviets breathing down his country's metaphorical neck, Chairman Mao ordered the construction of a vast underground city to serve as a shelter during an invasion, air raid or nuclear war. This was no minor undertaking. In the late 1960s, the population of Beijing reached 7.5 million residents . In short order, the residents of the capital city were put to work excavating their enormous air raid shelter. Most of the digging was done by hand, and the work was shared by adults and schoolchildren alike. This communal venture fit nicely into Chairman Mao's Cultural Revolution -- a massive campaign to support the communist movement and thwart counterrevolutionary ideas. From 1969 to 1979, the people of Beijing focused their attention underground. Watch Reuters video at website: Building the $500 million Beijing Olympic Stadium

I’ve had it for about a month now and I …..” Man without Portable Rain Covering: “Dude, that was sarcasm.”

POPSFrozen Katrina People will freeze to death this winter while republicans ignore assistance in favor of voting for offshore oil drilling. Last year LIHEAP was only able to assist 16% of eligible recipients forcing the poor to choose between food, medicine or heating fuel. And Bush proposed cutting the aid by $379 million. The total annual funding for this program amounts to less than what the U.S. spends every week in Iraq. They way we treat our disadvantaged, poor and homeless is atrocious.

POPSWhy We Love Our Lawns Falk tested his theory by showing various groups worldwide photos of different landscapes, including their own. All groups said they'd prefer to live in savanna-like surroundings, even jungle-dwellers and city folk who'd never seen a savanna or a lawn.

POPSA New Era for Kurdish Literature This sounds like a very interesting novel that explores the conflicting interests of politicians and novelists. The author, Bakhtyar Ali, hopes that this novel will herald the end of the subordination of Kurdish writers to politicians. I hope this novel will soon be translated into English and thereby gain a wider readership.

POPSHospitals deporting immigrants This just reminds of a video they have in LA of a hospital dropping off a woman at the homeless shelter because she did not have health insure. She was still in her hospital gown & they just dropped her off on the corner in downtown LA. Something is really wrong with our health care system. Seriously seriously wrong.
