Humanity's Team "a civil rights movement for the soul,"
tidbit2
by tidbit2  10-2-2009
The New Spirituality is not a new religion, according to the movement. Rather, it is an expansion of all present human theologies; an updating of them; a refreshing of them, rendering all current sacred teachings even more relevant to the present day and time. Key to the New Spirituality is a belief that God is not separate from anything -- and neither are humans. more details at source

Stop pumping our money to them!
aklimento
by aklimento  9-26-2009    4
Yes, this is disgusting and must be condemned in every corner of the world. But first of all I don't want to pay for insane exercises of deranged fanatics with twisted indoctrinated brains. They didn't answer yet for already committed crimes against humanity. This is clear sign of apartheid, let's call things by their own names..

Making lives better by recycling durable medical equipment
Lexica
by Lexica  8-12-2009
More: A man has come to pick up a cane and commode for his disabled wife. He knows there is no charge for the items, but he pledges to make a future donation as he walks away, as soon as he can, when "things get better some day." A woman arrives and hopes to find a walker for a friend who "can't stand on her own two feet anymore." Meanwhile, an elderly woman approaches with a large floor mat balanced on the handlebars of her own walker. Susan runs up to greet her — she is a friend and regular visitor who routinely searches the neighborhood for items that Home Cares might use. A volunteer named Wayne offers to assist me, and I discover through conversation that he's an expert mechanic available to help with wheelchair problems. A young man in a baseball cap arrives — there, weekly as usual, with his pick-up truck brimming with donated medical equipment and supplies.

Lovelock---The Dark Side of Climate Change: It's Already Too Late
papananook
by papananook  7-9-2009    3
Please read the article--it might inform you as to the real seriousness of human civilization being destroyed. My instincts and well- informed brain tell meDr. Lovelock is right....he's been watching this from the beginning,,, After reading his book, "Revenge of Gaia", I wondered how people would react--so far, we have foot-draggin-weak-assed legislation, some watered down non-binding crap from the G-8 countries----it's already too late for PEOPLE to save our selves from a huge die off as Gaia shrugs off the human virus. By the end of this century we may lose several billion of the human species and unfortunately many other flora and fauna due to human greed and ignorance. SERIOUSLY-- we are fuckin' doomed, folks. Read all about it.

Climate Change: It's Already Too Late
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  7-7-2009    8
“There is no tipping point, just a slope that gets ever steeper,” writes Lovelock. “Because of the rapidity of the Earth’s change, we will need to respond more like the inhabitants of a city threatened by a flood. When they see the unstoppable rise of water, their only option is to escape to higher ground. We have to make our lifeboats seaworthy now stop pretending there is any way back to that lush, comfortable, and beautiful Earth we left behind sometime in the 20th century.” Dr. James Lovelock Warns the World: Enjoy it While You Can

Center for Biological Diversity Declares Legal War on Global Warming
merrie
by merrie  3-3-2009    1
That program will be replaced by the new institute, which will expand and direct climate change work across all of the Center's programs to protect biodiversity, oceans, public lands and urban wildlands. Siegel authored the scientific petition and argued the legal case that won Endangered Species Act protection for the polar bear due to global warming in 2008. Siegel was named California Lawyer of the Year for successfully arguing a 2007 case that overturned inadequate federal fuel-economy standards for failing to consider their contribution to global warming. She shared this award with the Climate Law Institute advisory board member Deborah Sivas, who serves as director of the Stanford Environmental Law Clinic.

Islamic Conference for Dialogue Concluded
Yassin_M
by Yassin_M  6-7-2008    1
The statement emphasized that dialogue is one of the most important outlets through which Muslims can perceive the world, and achieve a set of goals, the most important of which is to introduce Islam, its legislations and humanitarian principles, in addition to its rich civilization. Dialogue also enables Islam to contribute to the march of human civilization and to respond to and correct the erroneous slanders raised against Islam, and to address the challenges facing the world owing to distancing themselves from religion and its values. Accordingly the world of today fell in the grip of vice and injustice, terrorism and Human rights violation. Dialogue also provides an opportunity for Muslims to defend causes of human rights and legitimate issues, and create a public opinion in its defense. Enemies of Islam are planning to disqualify Muslims from this legitimate area of struggle to pave the way for the dominance of one culture.

Enhancing Humanity
wildcat
by wildcat  1-9-2008    1
Yes, we shall change; but the essence of human identity lies in this continuing self-redefinition. And if we remember that our identity and our freedom lie in the intersection between our impersonal but unique bodies and our personal individual memories and shared cultural awareness, it is difficult to worry about the erosion of either our identity or our freedom by technological advance

Rare words 'mutate' faster than common ones.
pokkets
by pokkets  10-11-2007    3
I suppose if people don't use a word it is forgotten, or badly remembered. There was a great shift in language in Britain after the Black Plague. Labor became expensive and people who once were 'common folk' acquired money, land, and assumed positions of power. French that was spoken in the royal court, and was considered the 'official' language. This gave us many words describing end products, like beef, veal, and bacon, while words like calf, cow, and pig, which were in common use and concerned things that involved everyday farmers, and workers, The two dialects combining were a significant element in the evolution of the English language, because of the way it changed the frequency of word use.

Clues to our shared humanity
arifsali
by arifsali  9-19-2007
An unexpected delight from this summer’s TEDGlobal was a remarkable tale of discovery from paleoanthropologist Zeresenay Alemseged, who made headlines worldwide when he unearthed "Selam," a 3-year-old girl who died 3.3 million years ago. Technically a member of the hominid species, Australopithecus afarensis, Selam was still chimp-like in some respects. But Alemseged shows how she represents the beginnings of humanity: She could walk, her brain was growing, and she had the tools -- if not yet the ability -- to talk. As the bones of her relative, "Lucy," begin their controversial US tour

PNAS: Innovation, growth, and the global future of urban life
enbar

A new article suggests that many sociological indicators for urban life conform to a relatively simple mathematical model, and that the model predicts that "innovation cycles" will have to increase consistently in order to avoid urban "stagnation" or social "collapse." Somewhat alarming.

Universal Moral Code
knslyr
by knslyr  10-20-2006    2
Raises an interesting question... Is there a universal moral code? Is humanity pre-disposed to behave morally? Immorally? Alas, this debate may ultimately prove futile for as Lewis stated in The Abolition of Man, one cannot prove the truth of the universal moral code because “its validity cannot be deduced. For those who do not perceive its rationality, even universal consent cannot prove it.”
