The Moral Hazard of a One-Party System
CulturalEngineer
by CulturalEngineer  12-12-2009
It's the shared agendas of the two major parties (so-called) that are so perilous... not the simplistic left-right arguments which feed the media maw... And keep so many arguing about which is the "good" cop and which the " bad."

Biofuel Boom Could Cause Extinction of Orangutans
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  10-28-2008
"If the immediate crisis in securing the future survival of the orangutan and the protection of national parks is not resolved, very few wild orangutans will be left within two decades," UNEP concluded in a report last year. "The rate and extent of illegal logging in national parks may, if unchallenged, endanger the entire concept of protected areas worldwide."

Hillary's Unappealing Path
merrie
by merrie  3-13-2008    1
It is not enough to be vetted. The goal is to be vetted and found clean. Though it is increasingly unlikely, Clinton may still have a path to the nomination -- and what a path it is. She merely has to puncture the balloon of Democratic idealism; sully the character of a good man; feed racial tensions within her party; then eke out a win with the support of unelected superdelegates, thwarting the hopes of millions of new voters who would see an inspiring young man defeated by backroom arm-twisting and arcane party rules. Unlikely -- but it would be a fitting contribution to the Clinton legacy of monumental selfishness.

Why do we like music?
overture
by overture  1-16-2007
Quite a long discussion. Up to you if you agree or not. Some argue that this article focuses too much on the cognitive, others say that it is the details themselves that make this article an interesting read. What do you think? A popular song has 100 measures, 1000 beats. What must the Martians imagine we mean by those measures and beats, measures and beats! The words themselves reveal an awesome repetitiousness. Why isn't music boring? Is hearing so like seeing that we need a hundred glances to build each musical image?
