POPSTouch Screen Back in 1998/99, myself and a co-worker were brainstorming on computing ideas. We came up with an idea for a computer screen that would act like a kiosk of sorts, for the elderly. Realizing that there was a need to keep in touch and up to date with technology, it 'felt right' to bring something like touch screen for the elderly or those that could not type, into age (pun intended). Our idea was to set up these kiosk style monitors in senior assisted/non-assisted homes; on campus clubhouses, etc so anyone could send email and play a few games. Easy stuff that would not be intimidating or difficult to learn. Idea blown away when presented to our employer as not 'marketable enough.' About 3 weeks ago, I walked into Sam's Club; the computer section. A round table was set up with HP Touchscreen monitors. Curios, I walked over to inspect and could not get close enough except to watch. Persons much older than myself standing around the table, playing games by touching the scre

POPSAres I-X Launch: NASA's New Rocket Blasts Off On Test Flight The prototype moon rocket took off through a few clouds from a former shuttle launch pad at 11:30 a.m., 3 1/2 hours late because of bad weather. Launch controllers had to retest the rocket systems after more than 150 lightning strikes were reported around the pad overnight. Then they had to wait out interfering rain clouds, the same kind that thwarted Tuesday's try. The ballistic flight did not come close to reaching space and, as expected, lasted a mere two minutes. That's how long it took for the first-stage solid-fuel booster to burn out and separate from the mock upper stage 25 miles up. But it will take months to analyze all the data from the approximately 725 pressure, strain and acceleration sensors. Parachutes popped open and dropped the booster into the Atlantic, where recovery ships waited

POPSNew Camera Promises To Capture Your Whole Life A SenseCam-like device could be part of an artificial memory used by ordinary people, just as they use notebooks and planners as memory aids today. Geepers. They make it sound all cool and dandy, but you'd not only be logging your life, but everyone else's too. I'm not really keen on the idea of having my picture taken every single time I met someone, with one of these contraptions. This would turn everyone into a 24-hour surveillance system. I'm not sure I like the sound of this... :(

POPSSalt and Paper Battery May One Day Replace Lithium Batteries more: The battery is made by coating the paper, made from this cellulose, with a conducting polymer and inserting a salt-solution-soaked filter paper between the paper electrodes. Chlorine ions travel from the batteries positive terminal to the negative terminal while current is produced in the external circuit by the flow of electrons. The battery can be recharged in tens of seconds because the ions flow through the thin electrode quickly. In comparison to a lithium battery that would take 20 minutes to recharge. The salt and paper battery is still in the early stages of development as compared to other thin-film technologies. For a battery to be cost effective you need to able to obtain the material at relatively low cost and have a good manufacture process in place. The battery could be produced commercially in about three years and made available to distributors. Via: RSC and Technology Review © 2009 PhysOrg.com

POPSPilots question speed sensors' troubled history Barr, the USC aviation safety professor, said serious efforts to correct safety problems in the airline industry tend to increase in direct proportion to the number of people killed, while too little action is often taken in response to incidents in which no one is killed. It even has a name: blood priority. "The more blood that is spilled, the more corrective action is taken. The less blood that is spilled, the less corrective action that's taken," Barr said.

POPSTree Power cont; A study last year from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology found that plants generate a voltage of up to 200 millivolts when one electrode is placed in a plant and the other in the surrounding soil. Those researchers have since started a company developing forest sensors that exploit this new power source.
