Want a brain that bounces back like a super ball?
nedhamson1
by nedhamson1  10-19-2009
This is looking really good for my running friends - while they may be killing their knees and hips, they are keeping their brains young! (I walk and occasionally job 15 miles a day) One caveat though - the test was done on rhesus monkeys. So if you run a lot, have slightly longer arms than the rest of us and...

There is Now a Scientific Way to Measure Smelly Farts
clip-on-tie
by clip-on-tie  9-1-2009    4
"The contraption could even have use outside of fraternity houses, Clain says, as a biosensor for harmful hydrogen-sulfide-producing bacteria in hospitals. Or dentists could use it to measure oral malodor. They’ve also received some interest from doctors with four-legged patients. “You can test the health of livestock through the quality of their farts,” Salas says. “Smell and sound can tell you a lot about their bowel movements.” When it came time to present the invention in class, though, Clain and Salas had to test their detector by making raspberry sounds and breathing on it—human exhalations contain enough hydrogen sulfide to trigger the sensor. “It’s hard to fart something really smelly on command,” Clain laments. “Besides, it provided a nicer atmosphere for those around us.” Still, their professor saw fit to award the project a well-deserved A."

Unbelievable - really. The Sheriff thinks he can refuse to follow legal order of the court????? Of course if anyone fails to heed a lawful order of one of his deputies, they are subject to arrest. Maybe, the President should send in National Guard in to protect civil rights of people whose records are in those computers!

Researcher: article is "a flat, unambiguous, factually incorrect misrepresentation" of my findings
Lexica
by Lexica  7-15-2009
More: “When I saw the article my heart completely sank, and it made me really angry, given how sensitive this subject is. To be making claims like the Telegraph did, in my name, places all the blame on women, which is not what we were doing at all. I just felt really angry about how wrong they’d got this study.” Since I started sniffing around, and Sophia complained, the Telegraph have quietly changed the online copy of the article, although there has been no formal correction, and in any case, it remains inaccurate. But there is a second, less obvious problem. Repeatedly, unpublished work – often of a highly speculative and eye-catching nature – is shepherded into newspapers by the press officers of the British Psychological Society, and other organisations. A rash of news coverage and popular speculation ensues, in a situation where nobody can read the academic work.

Decoding the brain's response to vocal emotions
einbar
by einbar  5-27-2009
"We recognize emotions in others by observing their body language and facial expressions. The voice also betrays one's emotional state: words spoken in anger have a different rhythm, stress and intonation than those uttered with a sense of joy or relief. But how the emotional content of a voice is encoded in the brain was unclear. Now though, Swiss researchers report that they have decoded the neural activity in the voice-sensitive regions of the brain'

Computer Hackers Infiltrate Pentagon
asecretgirl
by asecretgirl  4-21-2009
Recently our government has posted advertisements for computer hackers to join forces in an effort to control the cyber attacks on government facilities. The ads must not be working cause the Pentagon was recently hacked and information on the Joint Strike Fighter was taken. Recruiters need to brush up on how to sweeten their offer of employment. Maybe include health care, dental, 401K contributions and 6 weeks vacation. All kidding aside folks we need to do something to stop this type of attack and secure our computer "borders" from attack. We definitely need someone in charge, which we do not have, to tighten our networks. What suggestions do you have?

Conficker Starts...Well, Doing Something
Andy Greenberg
by Andy Greenberg  4-9-2009
The first seven words of this story are pretty telling. Basically, we still don't know what the megaworm is up to. If it were simply keylogging, as Trend Micro speculates, that could mean major identity theft. But it would also be much less scary than some of the distributed denial of service scenarios others cybarmageddon scenarios others have worried about.
