POPSRejoice! Websurfing is good for old brains! "Researchers tested out 24 volunteers between the ages of 55 and 76. Half were experienced Web searchers, the other half had no experience. The participants performed Web searches and book-reading tasks while undergoing MRI scans. All of the participants showed significant brain activity during the book-reading tasks. But there was a major difference between the groups when doing the Internet searches, according to a UCLA press release. "While all the participants demonstrated the same brain activity that was seen during the book-reading task, the Web-savvy group also registered activity in the frontal, temporal, and cingulate areas of the brain, which control decision-making and complex reasoning." So while we, the digerati, may end up easily distracted, fat due to physical inactivity, and in chronic pain due to gadget-related repetitive stress injuries...at least we'll be more likely to keep our wits about us."

POPSBarack Obama Smarter Than A Fifth Grader? I guess Barack Obama will ease up on the old-geezer remarks about John McCain. If John McCain, 71, got the different militia groups in Iraq confused during a trip earlier this year, you can blame it on his advancing years, as the Democrats are so quick to point out. But what’s Obama’s excuse at age 46? Who doesn’t know we have 50 states? And there’s a difference between 100,000 and 100,000,000. Early signs of senility? Or is it more evidence that Obama is not a stickler for details. It might be time for Obama to stop calling McCain an old man. texasfred.net

POPSSeniors demand return of doughnuts! I think if someone wants to give them free treats, they should be allowed to have them, even if they're bad for them. This is America. We allow people to smoke, to not wear a motorclcle helmet in some states, and do a multitude of other things that are probably not healthy. I think seniors are entitled to the same rights everyone else has. Most of these people are well into their sunset years. Let them enjoy the little things in life while they still can!

POPSWi-Fi: Children at risk from 'electronic smog' I has this debate with the rest of the IT team at my company last year (I am an IT consultant). Companies see the cost savings of not using physical wired network - no wire cost, and no eletrician cost to put in the cabling - and really don't want to know anything about the health effects of RF radiation. Humans are electrical beings because cells are electrical, and the nervous system is too. It seems obvious that EMR would have potentially negative effects on humans, and jumping on to Wi-Fi without examining any ill-effects is stupid IMO. There is massive money backing the Mobile and Wi-Fi industry, because it is a huge money earner, so I wouldn't expect anything to be done any time soon.
