The Politics of Lying
katsteevns
by katsteevns  9-22-2009    2
When lying and deceit become normalized in a culture, they not only serve as an index of how low we have fallen as a literate society, but also demonstrate the degree to which language and education have become corrupted, tied to corporate and political power and sabotaged by rigid ideologies as part of a growing authoritarianism that uses the educational force of the culture, the means of communication and the sites in which information circulate to mobilize ignorance among a misinformed citizenry, all the while supporting reactionary policies. Especially since the horrible events of 9/11, Americans have been encouraged to identify with a militaristic way of life, to suspend their ability to read the word and world critically, to treat corporate and government power in almost religious terms and to view a culture of questioning as something alien and poisonous to American society.

If you love a word, use it. That makes it real.
einbar

"A crowdsourced toolkit for tracking and recording the evolution of language as it occurs, its goal is to gather as much information about a word as possible — not its mere definition, but also in-sentence examples, semantic “neighborhoods” of related words, images, statistics about usage, and more. And it’s all compiled via user submissions".

Circular Jerkality As A Concept In International Law
merrie
by merrie  4-27-2009    5
“fighting terrorism” or “the fight against terrorism,” as something that “has to be fought.” I do not consider this so-called “war on terror” as an international armed conflict. This was the paradigm of President Bush in order to justify certain practices under the assumption that human rights law would not apply, but of course human rights law applies. But on the other hand, the fight against terrorism, even global terrorism of the type of al-Qaeda, has to be fought, in a democracy in particular, within the rule of law, within international human rights obligations, and that includes also, if things went wrong, to take the right measures of reparations, and that includes also criminal justice. Sounds like the UN jerk’s “armed conflict” poo-pooing just circled back on itself. It’s all semantic anyway, given that all this guy is is a rapporteur, special or not.

Pun For The Ages
carrerinyes
by carrerinyes  4-5-2009
Odds are that a restaurant with a punning name — Snacks Fifth Avenue, General Custard’s Last Stand — hasn’t acquired its first Michelin star. How have the great comic writers regarded puns? Jane Austen puns once, in “Mansfield Park,” and it serves to impeach the moral character of the offender. Mark Twain’s first book, “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County,” enamored reviewers with its punlessness. There are “no contortions of words,” said a London paper. “His fun is entirely dependent upon the inherent humor in his writings.” The 20th century’s finest humorist, P. G. Wodehouse, doesn’t use them. Shakespeare, however, does. Many are bawdy: puns operate, after all, on double entendre. Yet the poet is guilty less of punning than wordplay, which Elizabethan taste considered more a sign of literary refinement than humor; hence “puns” in seemingly inappropriate places, like a dying Mercutio’s “Ask for me tomorrow, and you shall find me a grave man.” The true punster’s mi

Being Human and Language
DGNUK
by DGNUK  2-9-2009    4
I wonder what Heidegger would have had to say about Google or the World Wide Web? Speaking for myself, I have always believed that Language cannot fully encompass our experience. Some of the pivotal moments in life seem beyond words. My Father died nearly seven years ago and I still cannot put into words what it means to me. I don't believe I ever will. Consequently, the all encompassing semantic/lexical web of language will never encapsulate it.. My experience of 'the One' or 'Allah' or 'God' - choose your own label - is the same. It cannot be articulated. Maybe that is why we need the 'Word of God'
