Play controls impulsive behavior
ronhuxley
by ronhuxley  9-28-2009
"46 percent of kindergarten teachers said that at least half the kids in their classes had problems following directions. In another study, Head Start teachers reported that more than a quarter of their students exhibited serious self-control-related negative behaviors, like kicking or threatening other students, at least once a week. Walter Gilliam, a professor at Yale’s child-study center, estimates that each year, across the country, more than 5,000 children are expelled from pre-K programs because teachers feel unable to control them." Do these statistics sounds familiar? If you have a child in elementary school or preschool, you may have to deal with your child being criticized for their impulsive behavior. They might even be given a diagnosis or put in special "resource" education programs. I don't blame the educational programs or even political policy on education for the problems are children are experiencing in schools. I don't blame the mental health professionals f

Mahatma Gandhi and Margaret Sanger
Antara
by Antara  9-22-2009    1
"In January of 1936, a meeting took place between Mohandas Gandhi and Margaret Sanger . The subject of their conversation that day was contraception. Mrs. Sanger was, at that time, the archpriestess of the birth control movement in the United States . For her, as well as for her legion of followers, "birth control" meant contraception. Gandhi had a different understanding of birth control. For him it meant self-control."

video: Ted Leo - "Me and Mia"
Lexica
by Lexica  8-21-2009
More lyrics: Won't anybody here just let you disappear? Not doctors, nor your mom nor dad But me and Mia, Ann and Ana Know how hard you try Don't you see it in my eyes? Sick to death of my dependence Fighting food to find trancendence Fighting to survive More dead, but more alive Cigarettes and speed to live And sleeping pills to feel forgiven All that you contrive And all that you're deprived All the bourgeois social angels Telling you you've got to change Don't have any idea They'll never see so clear But don't forget what it really means to hunger strike When you don't really need to Some are dying for the cause, but that don't make it yours And even the nights, they could get better

Tough Choices: How Making Decisions Tires Your Brain
chestnut501
by chestnut501  7-24-2009    6
The brain works like a muscle: when depleted, it becomes less effective. Furthermore, we should take this knowledge into account when making decisions. If we've just spent lots of time focusing on a particular task, exercising self-control or even if we've just made lots of seemingly minor choices, then we probably shouldn't try to make a major decision. These deleterious carryover effects from a tired brain may have a strong shaping effect on our lives.

"House Subcommittee Cuts Funds for Abstinence Education"
kris_tea

"For more information & to contact your lawmakers, visit the National Abstinence Educations Associations Web site (http://www.abstinenceassociation.org/advocacy/action_alerts/aa_070109_two_significant_action_alerts.html)." The only method proven 100% to protect against pregnancy & STDs & they want to do away with it. Such is the logic of our politicians these days. Lack of morals & self-control run rampant in DC & in today's youth. Heck, sexually speaking, our society's morals & self-control has been increasingly declining since the 60's.

What is auto-erotic asphyxiation?
ofcapri
by ofcapri  6-9-2009    6
It's estimated that between 500 and 1000 deaths occur annually in the United States from this dangerous type of masturbation. While it is thought to be practiced more often by adolescent or young adult guys, a small number of women die from AEA every year. If a person does not die from cerebral anoxia, brain or tissue damage could possibly occur, depending on how long the brain and body are deprived of oxygen. A person also risks lacerating, cutting or bruising the neck, trachea, and esophagus, depending on the suffocation or strangulation technique used. These immediate threats to the brain and body, including death and brain damage, make auto-erotic asphyxiation one of the riskiest of all sexual behaviors. Hundreds of Irish Catholic priests 'to be implicated in child abuse report'
nuttyriv3r

Rome should have paid attention to Paul: 1 Corinthians 7:7 For I wish that all men were even as myself. But each one has his own gift from God, one in this manner and another in that. 8 But I say to the unmarried and to the widows: It is good for them if they remain even as I am; 9 but if they cannot exercise self-control, let them marry. For it is better to marry than to be on fire.

Delayed gratification and the science of self-control:
einbar
by einbar  5-13-2009    4
"This and subsequent research has led us to believe that the ability to delay gratification for better rewards in the future is a fundamental skill in success, probably because it looks at how emotions and motivations interact with a more rational appproach to reasoning. We know what's best, but can we keep temptation at bay to reach it?" The article is a compelling exploration of this key ability and the subsequent research that has sprung up around it to help explain how we manage to keep those cheap instant hits at bay.
