A Precious Gift for Lovers of Literature
Socratoad
by Socratoad  9-22-2009
The Paris Review Interview Archive "Since 1953, when the first issue of the magazine appeared with an interview of E. M. Forster, our Q&A encounters with the great writers of our times have come to be recognized as a sort of literary genre unto themselves: the Paris Review interview. More than fifty years—and more than three hundred interviews—later, the archive continues to grow with each new issue of the magazine. In November 2006, the first volume of a four-book set of The Paris Review Interviews was celebrated by reviewers across the English-speaking world. In tandem with this publishing project, we offer here online a complete index of every interview ever published, searchable by author and by date—as well as a substantial sampling of the archive’s finest interviews, posted in their entirety. Taken together, these conversations with novelists, poets, playwrights, essayists, biographers, journalists, and critics constitute what Salman Rushdie calls “the finest available inqui

Book Publishing: Intersection of Racism and Sexism
zizzy
by zizzy  7-31-2009
Ursula Le Guin spoke about the white-washing of book covers at the BookAmerca expo. Overexoticizing occurs too: click white-washed cover link. There is, in fact, a large audience for “black books” but they weren’t discovered until African American authors started self-publishing and selling their books on the subway and on the street and directly into schools. And, yet, the publishing industry still doesn’t seem to get it. Perhaps the whole “black books don’t sell” thing is a self-fulfilling prophecy? And then there’s the fantasy writer who had to user her first initial and borrow her grandmother’s name to use as a middle initial since her publisher didn’t think that kids would accept a woman writing a book with a male protagonist, this woman of course being J. K. Rowling. If we go back a few decades, there’s James Tiptree, Jr. Likewise, I don’t know of any men writing Romance, though there are probably some, but who write using female pseudonysm

R.I.P. E. Lynn Harris author of novels about black male sexual identify conflict
zizzy
by zizzy  7-29-2009    1
 Photo of E. Lynn Harris at clip source. Mr. Harris clearly tapped a rich vein of reader interest with his racy and sometimes graphic tales of affluent, ambitious, powerful black men ... who nonetheless struggled with their attraction to both men and women. ... “His writing, and his incredible mainstream success, encouraged a league of black gay and lesbian writers to follow in his footsteps,” says Lisa C. Moore, the publisher of the black lesbian publishing house, Redbone Press. “His words helped make black gay life accessible and worthy of open discussion to black readers, gay and straight—something much, much needed in black communities. I am grateful to him for opening those doors. He definitely made a powerful impact on the publishing business for black gay folks.”[/quote}

Right-wing military writer: We may have to kill war journalists
ratilfar
by ratilfar  5-27-2009
According to Peters: "The point of all this is simple: Win. In warfare, nothing else matters. If you cannot win clean, win dirty. But win. Our victories are ultimately in humanity’s interests, while our failures nourish monsters." I would say the opposite. Victories in Imperial wars simply breed more Imperial was of conquest.

Reconsidering Franklin Roosevelt
merrie
by merrie  3-24-2009
Historian Jim Powell has been conducting a very interesting debate with publishing magnate and FDR biographer Conrad Black over at National Review. http://corner.nationalreview.com/post/?q=MDBjZDM1ZjA1NTJmNDk4ODIyZTIyMjIzOWRmMjQzMzc= However impressive some of the government work might have been, it didn't involve things that people were willing and able to pay for. New Deal government jobs weren't self-sustaining. They weren't part of the ongoing private sector that involves people basically exchanging things they produce or services they provide for products and services they want from other people.

A Person Paper on Purity in Language, by William Satire (aka Douglas Hofstadter)
Lexica
by Lexica  2-15-2009
Hofstadter explains: Perhaps this piece shocks you. It is meant to. The entire point of it is to use something that we find shocking as leverage to illustrate the fact that something that we usually close our eyes to is also very shocking. The most effective way I know to do so is to develop an extended analogy with something known as shocking and reprehensible. Racism is that thing, in this case. I am happy with this piece, despite-but also because of-its shock value. I think it makes its point better than any factual article could. As a friend of mine said, "It makes you so uncomfortable that you can't ignore it." I admit that rereading it makes even me, the author, uncomfortable! Numerous friends have warned me that in publishing this piece I am taking a serious risk of earning myself a reputation as a terrible racist…To misperceive it this way would be like calling someone a vicious racist for telling other people "The word 'nigger' is extremely offensive."

Scribd Fights Back - Copyright Issues
onlinedesign
by onlinedesign  2-2-2009    1
We live in a commercial world where everyone wants their news and information, not just at their fingertips, they want it faster, quicker, better and more of it. Copyright issues are bound to creep up. All in all, Scribd is a phenomenal tool to have in your arsenal if you want to publish...anything. Not to be off topic, but the Scribd online community is actually a very effective networking tool, too. It may not be of the Facebook or LinkedIn caliber yet for smoozing, but I have been fortunate enough to make some very profitable business connections and forge a few lasting friendships through their in-portal communication network. If you don't know about Scribd and their new publishing technologies, you should definitely check them out.

Volcano Releases One Trillion Cow Farts Into Atmosphere
merrie
by merrie  6-3-2008    10
"It takes more than a volcano to stop our opposition to the threat presented by industrial production and free markets to the ideas of global government and central planning," said Mr. Pachauri. "If we don't act soon, my children may never be able to chair an intergovernmental panel, control the economy, and distribute production quotas. The hardest hit will be Third-World dictatorships that are contributing disproportionately more money to our members and their families. The stand against economic development and free enterprise has become an urgent global issue - a moral issue if you will - that affects the survival of all endangered intergovernmental agencies." A separate chapter calls for a volcano tax on the worst offenders starting with Chile - with a footnote explaining that if the Chileans hadn't disposed of the Marxist regime of Salvatore Allende in 1971, the whole issue could've been avoided because they wouldn't be anywhere near the list of developed nations today.

Self-Portraits in Oil - BB art series
righthand
by righthand  5-13-2008    1
"According to my theory, all our basic sexual instincts except their straightforward manifestations are the instrument in the hands of an artist. In this series I’m taking the basic instrument – my body and inspired by great artists use their techniques, my experience and plunge into the intercourse to unite and be one. I’m overwhelmed by desire to not primitively mimic the technique, but plunge inside, learn what was driving the genius, what inspired him. Before starting each work I studied in detail the work of the artist. It’s a kind of a present to my favourite artists. All the materials or textures used in the compilations were painted by me in oil. All works are self-portraits." ...Katerina Tumanova (Belkina) Country: Odincovo, Russian Federation Title: Paint Russian digital artist, painter and photographer, born in Samara. 'Red Flag' Obama's Blogger Flies Commie Banner
merrie
by merrie  4-27-2008    2
Graham-Felsen, according to a 2003 article in the Harvard Crimson, adorned one corner of his shared student apartment with "a Communist Party flag ... bought on their trip to Russia the summer after sophomore year." The revelation echoes an earlier public relations problem in February when a Houston Fox TV affiliate captured images of a volunteer in an Obama campaign office working in front of a flag featuring the image of Che Guevara, the South American revolutionary who became Fidel Castro's executioner after the communist takeover in Cuba. At that time, the Obama campaign issued a statement calling the flag "inappropriate" and noting that the office where it was displayed was funded by "volunteers" and was not the official campaign headquarters.
