POPSA Merry Christmas for 'Health Care Command and Control Administration's' Congress
'not green enough' will be rationed. The cross enforcement of anti-pollution laws and green technologies will bring the EPA to the party as an enforcement arm tailored to regulating all manner of pollution producers. Think of banning riding mowers as creating pollution and a sedentary lifestyle, thus running afoul of the 'Green AND Obesity Police.' Want to smoke a cigar with your goombahs at the local pizzeria? Fuggedaboudit! Pizza will, of course, be banned or regulated as a major cause of obesity. Those ovens that pump out CO2 by the cubic yard have got to go, too. And cigars? Not only do they cause cancer, global warming and spew aroma pollutants, but the second hand smoke is a weapon used to assault other peoples' health. Now fur-wearing can be rightfully banned as the glorification of sport hunting among otherwise 'civilized' people. The practical implications of amassing policy-making power in one central administration is almost endless as more and more regulatory

POPSReport: smoking bans protect nonsmokers from heart attacks
More: While heavier exposure to secondhand smoke is worse, there's no safe level…even less than an hour's exposure might be enough to push someone already at risk of a heart attack over the edge. That's because within minutes, the smoke's pollution-like small particles and other substances can start constricting blood vessels and increasing blood's propensity to clot — key heart attack factors. Yet many people don't know they have heart disease until their first heart attack, making it important for everyone to avoid secondhand smoke, Benowitz said. "Even if you think you're perfectly healthy, secondhand smoke could be a potential threat to you," he said. Many of the IOM committee members initially were skeptical they'd find much benefit from the bans, said statistician Stephen Feinberg of Carnegie Mellon University. He proclaimed himself "the resident skeptic" who changed his mind. "There was a clear and consistent effect of smoking bans," he said.

POPSButt Out Of New York City Parks "The cigarette may be an unfortunate symbol of today's struggle for freedom in the United States of America, but those of us who value liberty over security, and even over health, must now rally round it." ------Sheldon Richman (CATO institute)

POPSA Few Whiffs of Smoke May Harm Your Heart The new study provides further evidence that just being near someone who smokes (secondhand smoke) significantly increases your risk for heart attacks and strokes. Breathing in levels of smoke far less than what equals one cigarette a day increases your risk of cardiovascular disease by about 20% to 30%, compared to people who are not exposed, the researchers found. They say that even low levels of smoke can prompt dangerous biological changes -- such as inflammation and increased platelet activity -- which make heart attacks more likely. Researchers noted the steepest increase in risk in those who had relatively low levels of smoke exposure. In other words, breathing in even small amounts of smoke can have profoundly deleterious effects on health. But those exposed to low levels are not the only ones that should worry -- the risk increases further the more smoke one inhales.

POPSFood of the week: Carrots Tips for Preparing Carrots: Wash carrot roots and gently scrub them with a vegetable brush right before eating. Unless the carrots are old, thick or not grown organically, it is not necessary to peel them. If they are not organically grown, peel them; most all conventionally grown carrots are grown using pesticides and other chemicals. If the stem end is green, it should be cut away as it will be bitter. Depending upon the recipe or your personal preference, carrots can be left whole or julienned, grated, shredded or sliced into sticks or rounds.

POPSCall to ban child-in-car smoking
And a spokeswoman for the road safety charity, Brake, said smoking while driving meant people were not concentrating on the road. "All that can add up to not having proper control of your vehicle or dangerous driving." She said it might be useful to have a law banning smoking in the same way there was in force regarding using hand-held mobile phones. But Neil Rafferty, Scottish spokesman for Forest, the pro-smokers' rights group, said: "We don't think that children should be exposed to smoke in a car but a ban would be a waste of police and court time. "Would it be OK if you opened the sunroof or a window while smoking? It's an impractical suggestion. "People like those at the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health should be more realistic about what is possible." A Department of Health spokesman said it would look at whether current anti-smoking laws needed to be extended. He added: "We would always strongly recommend that people do not smoke in cars

POPSSmoke, Smoke, Smoke That Cigarette...No Wait. Satire...Satire...Satire " finally, all these states and the federal government are raising their taxes to fund children's health programs- they say. this latest .60 cent tax increase is what started me thinking that today, as the new tax goes into effect, was the time to quit, so instead of the sick little kids getting $1.01 a day in taxes from me to fund their health programs, they're losing .41 cents, or $4.10 a week from me, State Farm, wants to up my new rate a few hundred a month because now I'm fifty and a smoker, so I'm dropping them and getting accident insurance instead and in two years when my rates would drop because (if) I've been a non smoker for that long, I'll go with another company with my business. "I'll keep you posted on how this is going, but right now I've gotten myself so upset that if I don't stop bitching I'll need a smoke to calm down.

POPSNature Vs. Nurture Begins in Womb I have seen this come true in y own children and grandchildren. I have a grandson who is extremely aggressive and combative, and his mother smoked during her pregnancy. My son, on the other hand, is just the opposite, and I have never smoked. I wonder if these results hold true for those of us that have had to suffer under second hand smoke most of our lives.

POPSGlutathione and Lung Health If you are a smoker or are routinely exposed to second-hand smoke, glutathione is even more vital. Yes, every lecture given about quitting smoking warns that smoking harms the lungs. But have you heard exactly how harmful smoking is? http://www.maxgxl.com/119870
