POPSHow do school bullies know that they bully? Also ignored by researchers, bullying behavior does not happen in a vaccum - schools in which young people bully other young people is a school where adults bully other adults, and young people bully adults, and adults bully young people, too. This study helps explain why all forms of bullying by all sorts of school community members is routinely ignored and not recognized.

POPSBill Moyers: "Why aren't we talking about guns?" But please, there are already some 200 million, privately owned firearms in America. Every year there are 30,000 gun deaths and in some years more than 400,000 non-fatal, gun-related assaults. The next time someone wades through a pool of blood to sidle up and champion the preservation of firearms, can't we just say, no thanks ? Enough's enough. To quote Bill Hicks, There's no connection (and you'd be a fool & a communist to make one) between having a gun & shooting someone, and not having a gun & not shooting someone.

POPSNew book exposes the myths of Columbine More: Read Columbine for the stunning reportage. Admire the heroism of students and teachers. Forgive, if you can, the police ineptitude and, later, their predictable cover-up. But pay particular attention to the back story: the evolution of two would-be mass murderers. And then, instead of feeling blessed that this nightmare didn't happen in your town, you might do better to ask yourself a variation of the line you hear on television at ten o'clock: Do you know who your children are?

POPSThe truth about Columbine The teenagers were called Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, and their school was Columbine High, an idyllic sounding place nestled between the Denver metropolitan area and the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. What is indisputable is that Columbine quickly became a byword for the nightmarish phenomenon - now seemingly a worldwide contagion - of school shootings. It was the bloodiest, creepiest, most vivid school attack anyone at the time could remember and remains, to this day, the episode the American popular imagination just can't seem to shake.

POPSThe side effects of Ritilin "How many future Beethovens, Thomas Jeffersons, Ernest Hemingways, Martin Luther Kings and Maya Angelous are we currently drugging into stupors in our schools and nation? Men and women of greatness are probably the least likely to sit still and do the normal schoolwork directed at the average student. How many non-drugged kids would have never become famous, but would have been able to hold a job at Wal-Mart, get married, have kids, go bowling, collect the next Beanie Babies, attend church, and enjoy life but are now doomed to become drug addicts, felons, and just plain psychotic?"

POPSconspiracy??
I generally find conspiracy theories interesting... but this is just ridiculous. I've never even held a gun, the few people I know that own guns are farmers that have them for shooting foxes that are killing their animals. Living in Australia where there isn't ready access to guns, being pro or anti has never really been an issue, but the more I read about these college and school shootings in the USA, the more relieved I am that I live in a country with strict gun laws. There's only one person I've ever known to be killed by gunshot - and that was a camper from the summer camp I worked at in New Jersey a few years back. His friend and him were goofing of at home, there were a stack of guns in the house, and his friend accidentally shot him. What a waste of a young life - a real tragedy. That sort of thing is major, national news over here in Australia. There just isn't the access to guns for anything like that to be happening. There are very few shootings.... I know there are il

POPS"Cynical Shyness": Violence of the Loner Don't know anything about this idea, but certainly would make sense if factored in with other markers of social inadequacy and emotional furnaces such as repressed homosexuality, sexual and social powerlessnes and so on. While the research is on the horrifying instances of killers, I wonder whether the "cynically shy" isolated loner is common to a less extreme defree degree in 'everyday' manifestations of hatred, malevolence, violent language and despair>

POPSAnother reason to homeschool As if school shootings aren't enough, now the teachers are terrorizing elementary aged school children using the scenario as some kind of demented "training exercise". Why would sane adults so terrify the children in their charge? As a parent, I would be snatching my child from that school in a heartbeat and he'd never set foot in a public school again.

POPSVirginia Tech Lessons It really does take a village. Imagine that. A village of bullies turned this young man into a monster. By the time someone noticed, it was too late.
