POPSAnother Illegal Kills in San Fransicko This poor woman. She has lost her husband and her two boys in a road rage incident that wouldn't have happened if the city's 1989 law preventing city agencies from contacting the feds if they find an illegal. So sad that this happened, made worse knowing it could have been prevented.

POPSSan Francisco: Sanctuary City Gone Awry However, as reported by the San Francisco Chronicle, the San Francisco Police Department "cited ’numerous documented contacts’ that officers had with Ramos and Lopez, and said both were active members of the MS-13 street gang.’" But thanks to San Francisco’s sanctuary city status, instead of being reported to federal immigration authorities and deported, Ramos was allowed continue to roam the streets of San Francisco until his arrest for the Bologna killings. Earlier this month, San Bernardino County officials threatened to sue the city of San Francisco for sending a group of Honduran, illegal immigrant, juvenile crack dealers to group homes in the city of Yucaipa without notification. Eight of them simply walked away from the unsecured group homes and only one has been recaptured. In fact, Yucaipa has seen a rise in violent crime in accordance with the influx of foreign offenders to its group homes in recent years.

POPS125 Fake Cancer 'Cures' You Should Avoid I only clipped the names of the persons/corporations responsible. Watch out for these. See source for the complete list. The products contain ingredients such as bloodroot, shark cartilage, coral calcium, cesium, ellagic acid, Cat's Claw, an herbal tea called Essiac, and mushroom varieties such as Agaricus Blazeii, Shitake, Maitake, and Reishi. These products claim to cure, treat, mitigate or prevent disease, and these products have not been shown to be safe and effective for their labeled conditions of use. Examples of fraudulent claims for these products include: * "Treats all forms of cancer" * "Causes cancer cells to commit suicide!" * "80% more effective than the world's number one cancer drug" * "Skin cancers disappear" * "Target cancer cells while leaving healthy cells alone" * "Shrinks malignant tumors" * "Avoid painful surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or other conventional treatments"

POPS"A Camera, 2 Kids, & A Camel" The Work of Annie Griffiths Belt "As a photographer I have learned that women really do hold up half the sky; that language isn't always necessary, but touch usually is; that all people are not alike, but they do mostly have the same hopes and fears; that judging others does great harm but listening to them enriches; that it is impossible to hate a group of people once you get to know one of them as an individual." (Annie Griffiths Belt) "A Camera, Two Kids and a Camel" is a photo memoir of her life, that discloses the secrets of a peripatetic life...revealing in often hilarious detail how she managed to juggle two children, bulky cases of camera equipment and everything needed for a nurturing family life as she traveled to far-flung destinations around the world. An award-winning photojournalist and mother of two has lived a life we only dream about...to see and share the world with your family.

POPSPay Attention to the Pope’s Onion but is rather its best ally in the fight for reason to survive the postmodern belief that truths worthy of being transmitted down the generations don’t exist. For him this is not a mere abstract, philosophical issue. He believes it is a tragedy when kids at school ask what car Napoleon was driving in Marengo, or if Salvador Dali is a relative of Muhammad Ali (by the way, I didn’t make up these two examples). Benedict is convinced that if the new generations have nothing important to learn at a deeper, human level, both faith and reason lose. Even worse, humanity loses. My humble suggestion: pay attention to what the pope says, but pay special attention to his less quotable words. Those will not be cotton candy.

POPSSalvador Allende's Sinister Sibilant Cyber-Socialist Experiment The interesting question this begs is: A computer with vast communications network, bringing up-to-the-minute information on the economy to facilitate centralized control was the goal of Allende's project. However, is our current economy, highly sensitive to trends or fears, expedited and exagerated by the speed of cyber communications, any different? With the centralization of information, won't this also inevitably result in the centralization of control? The internet has long been seen as democratizing, but isn't it really a far more ideal tool for breaking down regionalism in favor of centralized global control? (The Chinese Government certainly sees it that way... which is why I haven't been clipping for a little bit.)

POPSThe Archbishop and the Beast There's been a sudden increase of blogging about liberation theology since Barack Obama's pastor hit the headlines. It has brought forth some very strange comments and perceptions, such as that those, who like Archbishop Romero were crushed by the power of the state for opposing the abuse of power actually supported what they opposed.
