What puts you in a good mood? A bad mood?
ronhuxley
by ronhuxley  11-6-2009
Not sure if I buy this idea that a bad mood can put you in a good mood but I think I get the premise. I have some of my best family therapy when I didn't feel like putting up with peoples game playing. What puts you in a good/bad mood? Tweet us a reply or comment below!

Get My Exback
Daveyly
by Daveyly  10-21-2009
A breakup can truly devastate you, especially when that heart is stubborn enough to keep beating for the same person. The sadness is there, consuming your joy, causing your heart to throb literally and painfully. You can’t deny it - you just miss their presence. Then, desperation nags you, “What should I do to get my ex back?”

The last untouchable in Europe
Lexica
by Lexica  10-6-2009    3
More: On occasions, the bigotry was brutally enforced: in the early 18th century a prosperous Cagot in the Landes was caught using the font reserved for non-Cagots – his hand was chopped off and nailed to the church door. Another Cagot who dared to farm his fields (strictly verboten) had his feet pierced with hot iron spikes.… Even in death, the discrimination persisted – the Cagots were buried in their own humble cemeteries; there is still one in Bentayou-Sérée, a tiny village north of Pau.… I ask Marie-Pierre if she will let me use a picture of Sylvia – and the rest of her children. She shakes her head. "I'm sorry but no. It is OK for me to admit where I come from. But if people knew about my children's background, it might be difficult for them." She gazes out of the window, at the distant green Pyrenees. "In some places, the hatred lingers. Even now. The Cagots may be silent but I can still hear it."

Single Parents can create stable children
ronhuxley
by ronhuxley  9-7-2009
I came across the article below and felt a mixture of joy and sadness. Joy because it is good to see research finally state a truth about family strengths without the political stigmas. The article states that in an equally stable home, single parent families were no different than married, two-parent families, when it came to the emotional wellness of the children. That should be good news for single parents. It is also challenging news because it is harder for single parents to find a stable balance. Many of the single parent families I have worked with struggle with finances, quality child care and emotional support. Just do the math: One parent is stretched much farther than two. What the study didn't mention was how many children were in each type of home. One child is much easier to manage, for a single parent or two-parent home, than several! So my sadness comes from the fact that the article/study didn't offer more suggestions on how single parent families need ongoin

Ramadan Tradition: Algerian Women Choose Poetry Over Sitcoms
zizzy
by zizzy  9-1-2009
"Even though we knew it had no powers of prediction, we believed the messages that the bouqala gave us," said the elder woman, as her daughter Hind listened attentively. "We were young dreamers, and when a bouqala told us we were going to meet a handsome man, we wanted to believe it." For her part, Hind keeps a booklet in which she has written down all the poems that her grandmother knows. "I think this heritage shouldn't be lost," said Hind. "It has survived for all these years because women have jealously guarded it. That's what I'm trying to do now by noting down all the poems." "I've even recorded several cassettes," she added. "I keep these audio tapes and listen to them constantly. This is my favorite one: The almond tree blossoms in the spring, The Moon discovers its light, Cheeks blush with modesty Before the lover who gives himself away."

The CIA interrogation investigation: I am ashamed of my country
Lexica
by Lexica  8-25-2009    5
More: I guess what especially turns my stomach here is that the idea wasn’t just to inflict mental anguish on a presumably odious man in order to extract information. It was to inflict that pain by exploiting, as a weakness, whatever flicker of nobility or love remained in an otherwise wretched soul. It was a method of torture that would have been effective only because and to the extent there was something human left in him. Maybe I’m being overly sentimental, but every cell in my body is telling me this is sick and wrong.
