POPSJim DeMint Proposes Term Limits For Congress
Rarely, he gets voted out--and Senator DeMint points out that 90% of all incumbents who seek re-election, win re-election. Tom Coburn offers greater detail on why incumbents win re-election 90% of the time: The power of incumbency has created an almost insurmountable advantage for Washington politicians. Incumbency allows politicians to raise millions of dollars in campaign funds in exchange for earmarks. Incumbency gives Congress the power to raise money for itself " Congress just approved itself an increase of nearly $250 million from the U.S. Treasury that members will spend to promote themselves. Senator Coburn also points out that with redistricting (except for the unlucky Representative who gets drawn out of the House if his State loses one or more seats), a Representative, having good connections with his State legislature, can "choose his voters." The effect of this amendment would be very simple. Senators would be limited to two terms or fifteen years ....

POPSAyn Rand on Rights of An Embryo "Observe that by ascribing rights to the unborn, i.e., the nonliving, the anti-abortionists obliterate the rights of the living: the right of young people to set the course of their own lives. The task of raising a child is a tremendous, lifelong responsibility, which no one should undertake unwittingly or unwillingly. Procreation is not a duty: human beings are not stock-farm animals. For conscientious persons, an unwanted pregnancy is a disaster; to oppose its termination is to advocate sacrifice, not for the sake of anyone’s benefit, but for the sake of misery qua misery, for the sake of forbidding happiness and fulfillment to living human beings." "By what right does anyone claim the power to dispose of the lives of others and to dictate their personal choices?" ---- This quote is precisely the way I feel about mandating people to buy health care / insurance! I agree we need reform (of some type), but not to mandating coverage with penalties.

POPSForgiveness in Medicine Admitting one's mistake requires humility and sacrifice, as well as trust that the offended party won't use their advantage (in court or otherwise). To quote Larry the cucumber "it sure feels good to be forgiven!"

POPSUSS New York: "Strength Forged Through Sacrifice. Never Forget." At the prow - prominent and proud like the twin towers themselves - is a 19-foot-long bow stem, forged from 7.5 tons of Trade Center steel. Up from its homeport in Norfolk, Va., the ship will begin its New York odyssey with entry into the harbor about 7:30 this morning. At 8, there will be a 21-gun salute at Ground Zero. Then the New York will sail up the Hudson to the George Washington Bridge, turn around about 9:30 and dock at Pier 88, near 48th St. Along the route, thousands of New Yorkers are expected to greet their namesake. Prominent will be cops, firefighters and other responders, people who survived the conflagration and survivors of those who did not - brave souls to whom the ship is a floating memorial. For the living heroes and for 9/11 families, special privileges are due. They will have exclusive onboard visiting hours, a private reception and tickets to the shipboard commissioning ceremony Saturday.

POPS TenSION Obama On Iran: "I''m Not Interested in Victory" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PD6nMxYcmjE&feature=player_embedded H/T Gateway Pundit HotAirpundit Well done Chip Reid You showed the President's hand Reid: Thank you Mr. President, you just mentioned sanctions that have bite, what kinds of sanction, and I know you can't get into details but what kind of sanctions at all would have bite with Iran, do you really think that any kind of sanctions would have any effect on somebody like Ahmadinejad, secondly some of your advisers today said that this announcement was a victory, do you consider it a victory and if so why didn't you announce it earlier since you have known since you were President elect?.. Obama flustered by the question, "I'm not interested in victory, I'm interested in solving the problem" Clearly, today is a big smokescreen, he doesn't wanna come across as "America good, Iran bad," the global citizen is all talk here, we're not going to do anything

POPSSo Rep. Grayson, Enjoy Your Fifteen Minutes, For You'll Soon Be Revealed As A Selfserving Hack
These brave people do this not because they have no other options, as Senator and noted idiot John F. Kerry has so condescendingly asserted. They do this because they love their country and are willing to make the ultimate sacrifice in order to help preserve it. Republicans and FOX News, unlike the Democrats and their enablers and fellow travellers in the old media, can truly appreciate the depth of this commitment and sacrifice, consequently, fight wars with the intent of winning them, so as not to sacrifice such courage and dedication in vain. They do this without specious and whining claims about “messes left by their predecessors”, or taking weeks to make a decision so as to be in line with however the alpha sheep have caused the winds to blow that particular week. In short, they believe in leadership, not self-aggrandizing speechifying into every open microphone about their troubles. Alan, put simply, you are a detestable human being and a small man.

POPSAngel Of The Skies "If we can bring smiles and laughter, even if it is just for a few minutes, to these people, well, then it is worth it," she said. Schmidt 'adopted' Army National Guard Sgt. Tim Gallagher last year and sends care packages on a monthly basis. Although he enjoys the snacks and toiletries, he considers the journals the most moving and thoughtful of all the gifts he has received. "They will be something I cherish for the rest of my life," he said via e-mail. "Something for the ages to look at and see how people really feel about what we are doing here." Even when Schmidt does not have time to put together a care package, she tries to send her soldiers a postcard or short letter. "The morale of soldiers can be made or broken from the amount of mail they do or do not receive." If you would like to adopt a soldier, contact Robin Schmidt at find_robin@hotmail.com.

POPSFour simple questions that might save your life
More: If euphemisms like collateral damage and friendly fire are part of your campaign, then you might actually be on the wrong path. 4. If you die, will you die doing what you love? I’d say that overall, a love shouldn’t require your expiration. Certainly self-sacrifice is part of love, but conditions that require the ultimate sacrifice are very, very rare. If your passion routinely puts you in deadly situations, then you have probably given yourself to Thanatos. Extreme sports come to mind, but there are many ways people find a transcendent, spiritual experience by courting death. The spirit that they seek is destruction, not love, remember, they feel the same in the beginning, but they are not the same, one is a creative force, and one is destructive… These are but four simple questions, neither an authoritative or complete list… I believe that scrutinizing our passions, and looking for traces of Thanatos is some of the most important work we can do in our lives.

POPSTips for winter bike riding More: And what of darkness?… accident stats show that is unlikely. Far more collisions occur when a car turns in front of a bike—which means that bikes need headlights more than they need taillights. As for reflectors and reflective clothing, they only show when you're directly in the beams, so they won't prevent as many accidents as lights and bright colors such as yellow or light green (but not red, which the eye doesn't easily see in the dark). Bluish-white LEDs arrived on the scene a few years ago, but the original red LED color is still the brightest. This makes small, battery-powered LED "blinkies" great as taillights, but marginal as headlights. A better choice is a halogen system. For city riding, it's more important to point it up, where it shines in drivers' eyes, so they see you, rather than down onto the road, which is already illuminated by streetlights and house lights. Look for something that puts out at least ten watts.

POPS 'On "The Wealth of Nations"' P. J. O'Rourke Economic progress depends upon a trinity of individual prerogatives: pursuit of self-interest, division of labor, and freedom of trade. There is nothing inherently wrong with the pursuit of self-interest. That was Smith's best insight. To a twenty-first-century reader this hardly sounds like news. Or, rather, it sounds like everything that's in the news. These days, altruism itself is proclaimed at the top of the altruist's lungs. Certainly it's of interest to the self to be a celebrity. Bob Geldof has found a way to remain one. But for most of history, wisdom, beliefs, and mores demanded subjugation of ego, bridling of aspiration, and sacrifice of self (and, per Abraham with Isaac, of family members, if you could catch them). This meekness, like Adam Smith's production, had an end and purpose. Most people enjoyed no control over their material circumstances or even-if they were slaves or serfs-their material persons. In the doghouse of . . .

POPSUSS New York Sets Sail: Commissioning Ceremony in November --photos, slideshow, video
The USS New York will soon be defending freedom and combating terrorism around the globe, while also ensuring that the world never forgets the evil attacks of September 11 and the courage and strength New Yorkers showed.” This morning, the ship departed the Mississippi River to make her first journey. The ship departed from Avondale this morning at 7:00 a.m. and headed for the Gulf of Mexico. The ship’s journey has been met with fan fare, salutes, and glorious praise. Beginning with a New Orleans style farewell, the ship passed through Gretna and was met by firefighters and a police honor guard who sowed their honor and respect to those who died heroically on 9/11. As the ship continues to make its way to New York, she will be greeted by those who choose to remember and honor the nearly 5,000 who tragically lost their lives on September 11, 2001. The ship’s motto is “Strength Forged Through Sacrifice. Never Forget.” View photos-slideshow and videos at website
