POPSBomber Strikes at Pakistan Air Force On Thursday morning, a senior army officer, Brig. Moinuddin Haider, was assassinated by two gunmen who attacked his jeep during rush-hour traffic in Islamabad, the Pakistani capital. The Taliban had warned before the start of the campaign in South Waziristan that they planned to unleash attacks against Pakistan’s military assets. The Taliban attacked the headquarters of the Pakistani Army, in Rawalpindi, in a commando-style raid on October 10. The insurgents took more than 40 civilians and soldiers hostage for 20 hours, and more than 20 people were killed in the siege.

POPS The Truth May Be … Out There Anyway, I don’t know if there was a publicity-grabbing hoax plotted, or if an opportunity was seized on the fly, or if it all innocently happened the way Balloon Dad says it did. But whatever happened yesterday, I have a sneaking suspicion the flying Jiffy Pop balloon was not originally conceived, built and being tested as an innovative commuting vehicle. It’s not for nothing Shepard Smith and everyone else was comparing that thing to a UFO yesterday. Maybe, like the Richard Dreyfuss character in ”Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” Richard Heene was just strangely compelled to make his experimental 3DLAV commuting device look like a traditional Roswell-inspired flying saucer hoax.

POPSIn Mich. Being a Good Neighbor Is Against the Law When I opened this article this morning... I thought... GOOD GRIEF, I know we live in a Topsy-Turvy Society but this takes the cake! Wacko laws aren't new, there are probably endless piles of them still on the books somewhere in this land of ours. But please give me a break...! Acting upon them even though common sense is blatantly smacking you in the face is not only beyond the pale, it takes mindlessness to another plane. Move over Michele Bachmann, Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Sarah Palin et al... In Michigan there are regulators who oversee child care, that make you guys look like amateurs in the screwy sphere of absurdity.

POPSAmerica's Most Stressful Cities Last week I clipped World's Most Happiest cities. It was based on perception not reality. Well, this little menu has more meat to it. Reading down the list of stress ridden cities, I think traffic. That is, overcrowded highways, pollution, rush hour and miserable faces stuck in traffic! I can’t help but think traffic when I think stress. The meanness in us comes to the surface during our daily commute, and then stays with us the whole day. Until our nine-to-five ends and we fight traffic again so we can get to our sanctuary and hide. There we stay till another sunrise appears and we do it all over again. :-? Oh, speaking of sunrises, it seems there was a noticeable error on this list… Miami Fl listed sunny days at 32... Holy Moly Batman, that's got to be a mistake. I lived down that way and believe me the yearly blistering, scorching, sizzling sunny days number more like 332 (you ain’t seen nuttin till you’ve seen boiling point stress in traffic  )

POPSWhy a hospital is a bad place to have to make decisions More: You're standing at the chaotic hub of the hospital floor, with people being as helpful as they can -- really and truly -- while they are also dealing with the usual countless crises and being short staffed. It's an uncomfortable space.… And, every minute or two, there's this guy in some room somewhere, screaming for help which he may or may not desperately need, which may or may not be possible to give him -- but which isn't coming any time soon. And every human being in earshot, including you, is ignoring this. You aren't even wondering why no one is helping the poor guy. After all, he's not the one guy in the hospital you've come to see. You're used to it by now -- the screaming, the beeping, the feeling like you're in the middle of Grand Central Station at rush hour. Human beings can get used to anything. Anything. But, that doesn't mean it doesn't affect us.

POPSWomen-Only Train Cars ~ To Stop Being Groped But now, there is some temporary relief for Japanese women -- a train car of their own. It's just an experiment now, and only during rush hour, but for those who have been harassed, it has made a huge difference. One woman passenger told ABC News, "Because it's just only girls, females, and we don't touch, you know, so … very safe!" Even most men seem to think the women-only cars are fair. Many men worry about being falsely accused of groping if they accidentally brush up against a woman in a packed train. Gropers can be imprisoned for up to seven years or fined up to $485. But there's also some grumbling, especially in overcrowded adjacent cars, where the men are packed like sardines, while the ladies ride in comfort. However, as one newpaper editorial in Tokyo suggested, the victims did not bring about the women-only experiment, but the "chikan."

POPSBonding day for female inmates In Kentucky, the number of incarcerated women has nearly doubled since 2001, with roughly 2,200 women behind bars on any given day. While male inmates still outnumber them nearly 10 to 1, women are catching up, prison officials say, part of a national rise that experts attribute to more drug use, the legacy of mandatory minimum sentences and less judicial leniency toward women with children. And more jailed women means more jailed mothers.

POPSAging Train In Accident Should Have Been Replaced The only other fatal crash in the Metro subway system occurred Jan. 13, 1982, when three people died as a result of a derailment. That was a day of disaster in the capital: Shortly before the subway crash, an Air Florida plane slammed into the 14th Street Bridge immediately after takeoff from Washington National Airport. The plane crash, during a severe snowstorm, killed 78 people.

POPSTerrorist attack on Golden Gate green-screened? "until we are certain, I advise all Americans to stay alert. If digital imagery was not behind 5/16, there is still a 2,000-foot moth out there capable of creating a mushroom cloud that looks exactly like the one at Hiroshima."

POPSLimabaugh To Specter:Take McCain & His Daughter With You "This is a sad day for the GOP," Michael Smerconish, a longtime conservative radio host in Philadelphia, told the Huffington Post. "He is what the party needed to be. They need to cultivate more Specters instead of deriding him as a RINO .... The fact that Michael Steele is deriding him for his left wing record is just the same type of bullshit of playing to the base." Pointing to a Washington Post poll that showed only 21 percent of voters identify themselves as Republicans, Smerconish concluded: "I think the number is down to 20 percent." Meanwhile Sen. Olympia Snowe of Maine, one of the few remaining moderate Republicans in the Senate, told the Huffington Post Tuesday that Specter's abandonment of the GOP is "devastating," both "personally and I think for the party."
