ChotuKool: the $69 fridge for rural India
Socratoad
by Socratoad  Today 3:20 PM
To achieve its efficiency the ChotuKool doesn't use a compressor, instead running on a cooling chip and a fan similar to those used in computers, so like computers it can run on batteries. It's engineering credentials are further boosted by the fact that it has only 20 parts, as opposed to more than 200 parts in a normal refrigerator. The ChotuKool was co-designed with village women to assure its acceptability, and is distributed by members of a micro-finance group.

MYG | Nebraska's Sen. Ben Nelson
altaloman
by altaloman  Yesterday 12:02 PM
He made recent headlines for his deal making on health care reform, but will his legislative success spell doom with Nebraska voters? ___ In 1990, Ben Nelson entered the realm of Nebraska politics by running for Governor. He won the Democratic primary by only 42 votes and entered the governor’s office by besting incumbent Kay Orr by 4,000 votes. Nelson’s plan as Governor was to bridge the gaps between rural and urban areas " a “One Nebraska” " and create a “more efficient and effective state government.” These successes did not go unrecognized, for when Nelson was re-elected Governor in 1994, he attracted 74% of the vote, the largest margin of victory for a governor in half century. In 2000, Nelson ran for the U.S. Senate to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Senator Bob Kerrey. Nelson, a conservative Democrat, carried the day even as Republican presidential candidate George W. Bush won Nebraska with 62% of the vote. ___ http://senate.gov.twi.bz/h

John Birch | American Hero Murdered by Chinese Communists
MichaelEhline
by MichaelEhline  Yesterday 10:24 AM    1
Captain John Birch's death were deliberately covered up by the U.S. government. The reason for the cover-up did not become evident until some years later. On September 5, 1950, California Senator William Knowland announced on the floor of the Senate that the murder of John Birch had been deliberately covered up by communist sympathizers to conceal the true nature of Mao Tse-tung's "agrarian reformers" who were trying to oust Chiang Kai-shek's government. As Knowland charged on the floor of the Senate, had the truth about John Birch's death not been suppressed by our government, it is quite likely that America's official policy towards the Chinese communists and towards Chiang Kai-shek would have been significantly different. Perhaps the American betrayal of China to the communists might never have occurred. On such seemingly small events do the fates of men and nations so often hinge.

Dripping Irony, Illinois Can't House Its Own Prisoners, Welcomes GITMO Terrorists
merrie
by merrie  12-23-2009
state prison in rural Illinois to be the new home for a limited number of terrorist suspects held at Guantanamo. Administration officials as well as Illinois Sen. Richard Durbin and Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn will make an official announcement at the White House. So Illinois is so broke it has prisoners, it has an empty prison, it can't afford to pay to put the inmates in the prison so it releases them and sells out. Hey ya'll remember what state our President was from? Yeah that's right Illinois. Just think, now the nation can benefit from the same leadership that Illinois politicians give their state.

City Slickers Head to the Country For More Security
GridIron

Motivations can vary, but typically there are three groups: young people buying land as an asset or investment, with vague hopes to live on it someday; exurban commuters who have jobs in big towns or cities but want to escape the sprawl; and back-to-the-land types who want to dabble in hobby farming.

Hiding the significance of Houston electing an openly gay Mayor
zizzy
by zizzy  12-17-2009    2
The truth is this: Houston's mayoral seat was held by a Democrat before, and a Republican didn't even have a snowball's chance of winning it this time around ... All the cities of Texas voted for John Kerry in 2004 and Barack Obama in 2008. It's not that Texas isn't dominated by conservatives on a statewide level. It absolutely is. But narratives about the conservative monolith are not only unfair, but they have the potential to create long-term damage, too. If the liberal presence in Texas is ignored and written off, it won't get the support and the hope it needs to keep plugging. And right now, as the state's demographics start to move more towards urbanity and racial diversity, liberals need all the support they can get to seize the moment and turn the traditionally red state blue . Demographic trend across the United States: Republicans only win in white-dominated rural and suburban areas. Read clip in full @ source

Terrorists In The Heartland?
merrie
by merrie  12-15-2009    3
The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity to avoid pre-empting Tuesday's announcement. A Durbin aide said the facility would house federal inmates and no more than 100 detainees from Guantanamo Bay. The facility in Thomson had emerged as a clear front-runner after Illinois officials, led by Durbin, enthusiastically embraced the idea of turning a near-dormant prison over to federal officials. The White House has been coy about its selection process, but on Friday a draft memo leaked to a conservative Web site that seemed to indicate officials were homing in on Thomson. The Thomson Correctional Center was one of several potential sites evaluated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons to potentially house detainees from the Navy-run prison at Guantanamo Bay. Officials with other prisons, including Marion, Ill., Hardin, Mont., and Florence, Colo., have said they would welcome the jobs that would be created by the new inmates. Closing Guantanamo is a top priority for Obama

Several States Ease Restrictions on Gun Laws
jatfla
by jatfla  12-12-2009
I say it has nothing to do with the NRA. Some Americans do not have confidence in the American system of Justice, the efforts of local law-enforcement (they're overwhelmed), or the ability to maintain personal security. It's not just rural areas; it's regular folks who are taking responsibility for their own family's protection because the criminal element has become too large for law enforcement to handle. We receive, almost weekly, reports of criminal activity in our own neighborhood. Thankfully, the local police send out the reports, but we have to be aware of them and safeguard of property and children.

debbyski

"Mr. Burgess, who has lived and worked for most of his 96 years in Wyoming and Nebraska as a hired farmhand and in later years as a machinist, still drives his truck almost every day into Torrington, Wyo., about eight miles from his home, for a hot lunch at the senior center. But his driver’s license expires in January, and he is deeply worried that he might not pass the test this time around. Mr. Burgess gets housekeeping assistance under a state program that helps older people stay in their homes and out of nursing care. But if he could not socialize in town, he said, he would be lost. “I might be on roller skates,” said Mr. Burgess, still cowboy-thin in cinched-up Levis, his booming outdoor voice filling his home on a recent snowy afternoon. He glanced around the tiny, cluttered living room — the coal stove, the broken television, the walls lined with pictures of his wife, Laura, who died just over a year ago after more than 60 years of marriage."

Food Stamp Use on the Rise in the US as Poverty Increases and Stigma Fades
zizzy
by zizzy  11-29-2009
With most of his co-workers laid off, Greg Dawson, a third-generation electrician in rural Martinsville, considers himself lucky to still have a job. He works the night shift for a contracting firm, installing freezer lights in a chain of grocery stores. But when his overtime income vanished and his expenses went up, Mr. Dawson started skimping on meals to feed his wife and five children. He tried to fill up on cereal and eggs. He ate a lot of Spam. Then he went to work with a grumbling stomach to shine lights on food he could not afford. When an outreach worker appeared at his son’s Head Start program, Mr. Dawson gave in. “It’s embarrassing,” said Mr. Dawson, 29, a taciturn man with a wispy goatee who is so uneasy about the monthly benefit of $300 that he has not told his parents. “I always thought it was people trying to milk the system. But we just felt like we really needed the help right now.” - more @ clip source

Unconfirmed: Thousands Under Quarantine in Ukraine Have Been Killed by Vaccines
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  11-27-2009    2
Reports have come in of pneunomic plague following unusual aircraft activity. Doctors are reported to have been told that they cannot write down pneumonic plague as a cause of death and must write down swine flu. Nevertheless, there is complete media blackout about it except some comments I tried to verify this info, my cousin called friends in Drohobycz (also Western Ukraine) - there is nothing abnormal there. So it could be a provocation or to run false stories. Of course there is a chance that only small part of the region is affected, maybe they tried there untested vaccine and these are the results. Nevertheless, there is complete media blackout about it except some comments in my blog which for already 2 weeks confirm the fact of "thousands of victims". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LtMznUZIt00
