Boing Boing: How I learned to love my persimmon tree
Lexica
by Lexica  Today 5:55 PM    1
Lots of good discussion in the comments - how to choose a persimmon, how to ripen them, things to do with them, why you do not want to eat underripe persimmons, and much more. Persimmons are a family favorite, and I guess we must just have dumb luck with ripening them - the problems people describe here with being unable to ripen them are all new to me. (For the record, the family persimmon-ripening method: Place persimmon stem-side down on the kitchen counter, not in direct sun. Leave it there. Pick up once or twice a day to check whether it's getting soft yet. *shrug* It's always worked for us - we've never needed any of the tricks people mention in this post's comments.)

GIN, TELEVISION, AND COGNITIVE SURPLUS
wildcat
by wildcat  9-14-2008
A Talk By Clay Shirky from the talk: "We're going to look at every place that a reader or a listener or a viewer or a user has been locked out, has been served up passive or a fixed or a canned experience, and ask ourselves, "If we carve out a little bit of the cognitive surplus and deploy it here, could we make a good thing happen?" And I'm betting the answer is yes. "

The Company Store
sahara
by sahara  8-30-2008    2
Deregulation. "I owe my soul to the company store" is a reference to the truck system and to debt bondage. Under this system workers were not paid cash; rather they were paid with unexchangeable credit vouchers for goods at the company store (usually referred to as scrip). This made it impossible for workers to store up cash savings. Workers also usually lived in company-owned dormitories or apartment buildings, the rent for which was automatically deducted from their pay.

Rural Gays Say Life Ain't Easy
debbyski
by debbyski  1-12-2008    7
It really speaks to me about the amount of discrimination faced by these gays living in rural America who say they would give up their orientation in a nanosecond if they could, even admitting they would take a "magic pill" to end their gayness. Incredible what they would do to be accepted. Perhaps we should all take a magic pill to make us fit into what society really values. The line would be long, eh?

Tribalism, Violence and Poverty

The suggestion is that people being ruthlessly exploited by an appeal to their traditional loyalties will, in times of confusion and suffering, shelter first in their family, then in their 'tribe'.
