POPSSaudi stud gets 5 years for sex boasts If it had happened in Iran, it would have been condemned. The moralistic ones have shown the world what they expect of peoples behaviour, by using the power of the religion.

POPSVictoria to ban electric cigarettes Generally advertised as a stopgap measure while giving up. Interesting that the govt can ban this nicotine producing product with a "flick of the pen" but imagine the crap if they tried to ban smoking.

POPSChina quake despair turns to anger I suppose the press was bound to find an area to "blame". It is a pity, but corruption rulz. Darwin, after the cyclone in !974, was full of shonky builders (many were not, I am quick to add) who offered bribes to the housing inspectors. Not all rebuilt houses were cyclone proof. It would be interesting to compare all countries. The experience we have had with toys made in China is proof enough that there is corruption there as well.

POPSHumans causing new extinction event: academic Professor Steffen says the Anthropocene age will continue for some considerable time. "Even if we cut down emissions to zero or close to zero tomorrow, there would be significant amounts of extra CO2 up there for centuries into the future, and I think also in terms of biodiversity loss, there is what some people call committed biodiversity loss, or species that are on their way to extinction and there probably isn't much we can do to turn them around," he said.
