British Commander: Taleban Cannot be Defeated
blueridge
by blueridge  Yesterday 9:37 PM
He says the American strategy is doomed to fail. The Taleban (which denied any knowledge, role or involvement of themselves or bin Laden in 9/11) are tough, despite the image portrayed in media: the Taleban, tactically, is reasonably resilient, certainly quite dangerous and seems relatively impervious to losses. Its potency is as a force for influence.” The war in Afghanistan is not about "terrorism". (Repetition and mere allegation do not equal truth). It's about "regime change" and oil pipeline from the Caspian region (to Pakistan and the sea).

Boeing's Expects Qatar To Order Two C-17 Aircraft
merrie
by merrie  6-22-2008
Boeing urgently needs more orders to keep the production line open. It is already having to purchase long-lead items for unsold production slots in the hope of winning further export orders, including a three-aircraft deal for NATO, plus a potential contract for 30 more transports in two tranches for the US Air Force. If the production line can be sustained Page still sees potential demand for a commercial C-17 variant. “I think the customers would be there if the aircraft continues in production long enough for certification,” says Page.

Afghan Insurgents 'on brink of defeat' Task Force Helmand said
merrie
by merrie  6-2-2008
Alternative crops, such as wheat or rape, could prove a greater attraction than Helmand's massive opium trade, especially as international prices continue to rise. The ability of what is known as the Quetta Shura leadership had been "hugely reduced" and its influence "increasingly marginalised", the brigadier said. Michael Ryder, the senior Foreign Office official in Helmand, agreed that intelligence assessments suggested that the Taliban had become "fractured and fragmented". "There's a lot of suspicion from southern Taliban commanders of the agenda of Quetta Shura," he said, with the leaders trying to draw in an estimated £20 million a year from the opium trade. The number of Afghans involved in the insurgency has also fallen, with increasing numbers of Pakistanis, Chechens, Uzbeks and Arabs found dead on the battlefield.

The Late Great Arthur C Clarke dies at 90
tidbit2
by tidbit2  3-19-2008    1
he was a legend everything wouldn't fit in the clip "Sometimes I am asked how I would like to be remembered," he recalled recently. "I have had a diverse career as a writer, underwater explorer and space promoter. Of all these, I would like to be remembered as a writer." A statement from Sir Arthur's office said he had recently reviewed the final manuscript of his latest novel. The Last Theorem, co-written with Frederik Pohl, will be published later this year, it said. I look forward to continue reading his works he lives on through his work he will finally find out what lies beyond earth life

Iraq Veterans Denied Help
Fat_flan
by Fat_flan  2-5-2008    1
Was it worth, is it worth, any person giving their youth, health and sanity for a bunch of self promoting rouges calling themselves politicians? Yes. This requires that those who have given in the past, take up the gudgel and continue to demand equity for their services. One thing that they ought to do, make sure they are listened to. In the UK, those voices are The Royal British Legion and SSAFA. History has shown that for many individuals, these charities are to be found wanting. After all, the powers of these charities did very well for themselves whilst a great percentage of veterans had to settle with an audacious theft of their pensions. See http://www.afpg.info/

New Hypoxia Execution - Totally Humane & Cheap
righthand
by righthand  1-16-2008    7
...Emerging from the chamber, he believes the test to push his life to its limit has failed. Nor has he any recollection of his inability to reopen his oxygen supply or to put his mask back on. "I fooled you, didn't I?" he says triumphantly. "No, Michael, death was your final destination today," says Meeuwsen, who trains fighter pilots for the Royal Netherlands Air Force. "Hans saved your life." Portillo travelled to a military training base in the Netherlands to research the effects of oxygen starvation, technically known as hypoxia, on the body. His quest is unusually dark. What he really wants to know is if hypoxia can offer a humane method of killing people in the 55 countries that still have the death penalty on their statute books.

France Signs Military Base Agreement With United Arab Emirates
merrie
by merrie  1-16-2008
French Vice Admiral Jacques Mazars, who heads the project, said the base would include members of the French navy, army and air force. Outside of Iraq, the United States has about 40,000 U.S. troops on bases across the Gulf – including the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet headquarters in Bahrain. The British military also has a small presence in the Gulf. The Royal Air Force operates out of Al Udeid, a U.S. air force base in Qatar, and the military is part of the coalition naval task force based in Bahrain.

With Friends like These? American and British air forces try to spy on visiting Indian aircraft.

From the article: "The September issue of Air Forces Monthly reports on a recent exercise between the Indian Air Force and the Royal Air Force under the headline “AFM Asks: Just a Coincidence?” You see the corner stone of this exercise was the visit to the UK by the IAF newest fighter, the Su-30MKI an improved version of the venerable Su-27 Flanker."

Music Decoded From 600-Year-Old Carvings
sparklingdreams
by sparklingdreams  5-2-2007
"Musicians recently unlocked a 600 year old mystery(http://www.reuters.com/article/topNews/idUSL014372920070501) that had been encoded into the walls of the Rosslyn Chapel in Scotland, the one featured in The Da Vinci Code. The song was carved into the walls of the chapel in the form of geometric shapes that a father-son team — both are musicians and the father is an ex-Royal Air Force code breaker — finally matched to so-called Chladni patterns (see the Wikipedia article on cymatics). The recovered melody was paired with traditional lyrics (translated into Latin) and recorded; the result can be heard in this video (also linked from the musicians' website at http://www.tjmitchell.com/stuart/rosslyn.html ). The video also gives a visual representation of how the engravings match up to the cymatic patterns."

Top Ten Ghost Photos - #6
Eagle Bauer
by Eagle Bauer  12-19-2006    2
Freddy Jackson was a mechanic in the Royal Air Force in World War I. Freddy Jackson's squadron served onboard the H.M.S. Daedalus. Freddy Jackson was killed in 1919 when an airplane propeller hit him. Two days later when the squadron assembled for a group photo, Freddy Jackson faithfully showed up, grinning behind the ear of a fellow comrade. Guess nobody bothered to tell Freddy Jackson that he was dead. His face was widely recognized in this photo by members of the squadron.
