SPRING SNOW STORMS CAUSES HAVOC IN EUROPE
merrie
by merrie  3-27-2008
The number of departing flights was reduced from 60 to 45 per hour. The second day of snowfall this winter season caused problems on the train tracks, a spokesman said. In the night between Monday to Tuesday, 37 road accidents took place due to slippery roads, a spokesman for the Dutch police said. AUSTRIA: One person was killed and about 30 injured when a snowstorm provoked a huge pile-up involving up to 100 vehicles on a motorway. The accident, which happened in the middle of this morning on the Seelwachen-St Georgen stretch of the autobahn, left numerous motorists trapped inside their cars. Up to 14 people were seriously injured in the pile-up, according to the Red Cross. Low visibility due to the snowstorm was to blame for the crash, and the Austrian motoring association said that up to 100 cars were involved. One helicopter was at the scene this afternoon, but other helicopters had to abort their attempts to join the rescue mission because of continuing heavy

Only English prisoner at Auschwitz dies, 97
mickfinn
by mickfinn  3-8-2008
In his book, An Englishman in Auschwitz, Mr Greenman described their arrival in Birkenau. "The women were separated from the men: Else and Barny were marched about 20 yards away to a queue of women...I tried to watch Else. I could see her clearly against the blue lights. She could see me too for she threw me a kiss and held up our child for me to see. What was going through her mind I will never know. Perhaps she was pleased that the journey had come to an end." Mr Greenman later said that the hope of being reunited with Else and Barney kept him going in the gruelling days ahead. After learning his wife and son had been gassed, Mr Greenman dedicated his life to educating people about the holocaust and fighting racism. He never remarried, grieving for his lost family all his life, and spent his last years living at his home in Ilford, east London.

Japanese Scramble to Spin Shooting Story
papananook
by papananook  3-7-2008
The Japanese Coast Guard and the Japanese Fisheries Agency have stated to the media that the devices were flash grenades and that warning shots were fired. Only the Institute for Cetacean Research is denying that warning shots were fired and describing the flash grenades as “warning balls.” “I think the video tells the story,” said Sea Shepherd volunteer Laurens De Groot, a former police officer from Rotterdam. “I’m familiar with the devices thrown. They are the type of flash grenade that specially trained SWAT teams used to combat armed and dangerous criminals.” The Japanese claim that Captain Paul Watson is lying about being shot was expected. When Giles Lane and Benjamin Potts were tied to the mast of the Yusshin Maru No. 2, the Institute for Cetacean Research claimed it was a lie until the video images were released. Dr. David Page, the ship’s medical officer, has examined and verified that there were three injuries sustained, all severe bruises. Ralph Lowe from Melbourne

Crabs (the pubic variety) Are In Danger of Extinction
zasel
by zasel  10-26-2007
I came across the clipped statement in the Harper's Weekly report. I had to read it three or four time before I could believe what I was reading. But, I still do not understand what Giant Pandas have to do with the possible extinction of crabs. Now excuse me, but I need to stop typing and start scratching.
