Lancashire bus problems.
notareargunner
by notareargunner  8-6-2008
If the pensioners and disabled had not received their bus passes, those very same busses, which are now full, would be damaging the roads of Lancashire EMPTY. Stop frightening the old and disabled. If you are getting ready to withdraw this concessionary package, at least have the courage to say so. Just because the average politician cannot do simple accounts, do not think that the average OAP or disabled person is so inflicted. We all know you rely on the inertia of the electorate, but many passengers on the busses are being forewarned of your duplicity. You used legalese to silence the revolt growing over he abandonment of the L1 service in Blackpool. You will get more than a whimpering reaction if you do not tell the truth about the realities of life with and without bus services. But from the expense claims submitted to Councils, it must be gleamed that no councillor uses a bus?

The individual we think of today was actually born in the Renaissance.
balthazarus
by balthazarus  7-20-2008
some more quotations: Open Source Democracy—which I wrote about a decade ago—is not simply a way to get candidates elected to office. It is a collective reprogramming of the social software, a disengagement from the myths through which we abdicate responsibility, and a reclamation of our role as citizens who participate in the creation of the society in which we want to live. This is not personal democracy at all, but a collective and participatory democracy where we finally accept our roles as the fully literate and engaged adults who can make this happen. " i like it. One should be active in how he feels life should be.

Mexico Isn’t Feeling the U. S. Economic Slump
sahara
by sahara  6-4-2008    1
Bound to the United States by history, geography, immigration, trade and investment, Mexico’s fortunes have long been linked to the US. The U. S. housing industry, for example, which employs one in five Hispanic immigrants, is in a slump, resulting in a marked slowdown of remittances sent to Mexico. A prolonged U. S. downturn would undoubtedly hit Mexico hard. Still, the nation’s economy is holding up well. The Mexican bolsa (stock) index is up 14.5 percent so far this year. The peso is strong: At the first of the year, $1 could buy nearly 10.9 pesos; now $1 buys a little over 10.3 pesos. While Mexico still ships about 80 percent of its exports to the United States, its farmers and manufacturers are looking for new customers in Asia, Europe and the rest of Latin America. During the first quarter, Mexican exports to the U. S. grew slightly more than 16 percent, while shipments to the rest of the world grew at twice that pace, 32 percent. Exports to Europe grew by 56 percent.

Anderson helped organize the rally and not only denounced the war in Iraq, but spoke out against further military action. "There is a substantial risk, especially with the complacent citizenry, the president will order an attack against Iran, having continued the case for another illegal, tragic war of aggression against a people who largely stood in sympathy and solidarity with us on 9/11," he said. Some high school students who are not old enough to vote were there, believing their voices can still make a difference. Rose Nelson told us, "No matter how old you are, you can still exercise your First Amendment right, and that's the right to protest, to assemble. We've got to say something because we can."

History is crowded with instances of disasters which have fallen upon individuals and nations who have sought the Pope's favours. Space allows us to name only a few. 1851 - Pope Pius IX sent the Golden Rose to the king of the two Sicilies. In less than a year he lost his crown and kingdom. 1866 - The same Pope sent his blessings to the Austrian Kaiser. In less than a year he lost Venetia and was defeated at Sadowa. 1867 - The Pope blessed Maximilian, Emperor of Mexico. He was dethroned and shot. Then the Pope blessed the Emperor's widow. She became a hopeless maniac, and died in exile. (more)

Mysterious people
Aribeth

who appeared in the village of Woolpit in Suffolk, UK, in the 12th century. The children were brother and sister and they had green colored skin. Their appearance was normal in all other areas. They spoke an unrecognized language and refused to eat anything other than pitch from bean pods. Eventually their skin lost its green color. When they learned English they explained that they were from the ‘Land of St Martin’ which was a dark place because the sun never rose far above the horizon. They claimed that they were tending their father’s herd and followed a river of light when they heard the sounds of bells - finding themselves in Woolpit. Some of the more unusual theories proposed for the origin of the children are that they were Hollow Earth children, parallel dimension children, or Extraterrestrial children.

Ancient Egyptians did it tough
pokkets
by pokkets  3-31-2008
The paintings and etchings on the tombs, and walls, were requested by the nobility, so their story was told, There were far many more average people, as there are today, who made up the bulk of the population, whose names are not recorded, but helped build the city, and tell the story of the country. The evidence is just harder to find.

Christian Pilgrims Mark Good Friday In Jerusalem's Old City
merrie
by merrie  3-23-2008
Many pilgrims prayed in the ancient Church of the Holy Sepulcher, traditionally the site of Jesus' death, burial and resurrection. Some chanted hymns or played instruments; others prostrated themselves on a smooth rose marble slab marking the spot where Jesus' body was placed after it was removed from the cross, passing their personal belongings over it for blessings.

Mikheil Saakashvili:"Rose Revolution" Of The Republic Of Georgia
merrie
by merrie  3-19-2008    1
The task of rebuilding a country plagued by two wars with neighboring regions and a limping economy during his first year in office has been anything but easy. Mr. Saakashvili studied law at Kiev University and the International Institute of Human Rights in Strasbourg before earning his LL.M. from the Law School. After a year as an intern for New York City-based Patterson, Belknap, Webb & Tyler, Mr. Saakashvili's superior intellect and energy won him a job offer with the firm. He declined, choosing instead to return to Georgia to take up a political career. By 2000, President Shevardnadze had appointed him justice minister, but the young Columbia graduate resigned two years later in a remonstration of what he perceived to be widespread corruption and cronyism among the Georgian leadership. Mr. Saakashvili was soon mounting daily protests - drawing tens of thousands of discontented supporters - against parliamentary elections marred by fraudulent practices.

Most of the books on the list I have not heard of. Like most lists, and most people, they have different perspectives. I'm glad to see that Haruki Murakami has several books on the list. Though i do believe that his new novel After Dark and his short stories are better that his popular Kafka Currently I'm reading a Robert Ludlum (The Matarese Countdown), cant say that I'm that impressed. What are you reading? And is it worth reading.

Pirates take cargo ship with 43 crew
Amergin
by Amergin  10-30-2007
In May, pirates complaining that their demands had not been met killed a crew member a month after seizing a Taiwan-registered fishing vessel off Somalia’s north-eastern coast. Pirates even targeted vessels on humanitarian missions such as the MV Rozen, which was hijacked in February soon after it had delivered food aid to north-eastern Somalia. The ship and its crew were released in April, but the World Food Program has since relied on more expensive air deliveries for Somalia.
