POPSThe Feral Child She weighed 46 pounds. She was malnourished and anemic. In the pediatric intensive care unit they tried to feed the girl, but she couldn't chew or swallow solid food. So they put her on an IV and let her drink from a bottle. Aides bathed her, scrubbed the sores on her face, trimmed her torn fingernails. They had to cut her tangled hair before they could comb out the lice. Her caseworker determined that she had never been to school, never seen a doctor. She didn't know how to hold a doll, didn't understand peek-a-boo. "Due to the severe neglect," a doctor would write, "the child will be disabled for the rest of her life." Hunched in an over sized crib, Danielle curled in on herself like a potato bug, then writhed angrily, kicking and thrashing. To calm herself, she batted at her toes and sucked her fists. "Like an infant," one doctor wrote.

POPSAmericans Get It! I wish I could find the original primary source from the CNN interview more quickly. If I had known that this was so poorly understood outside our country, I would have clipped the original CNN interview at the time when it was easier to find. One month of news at CNN is mountain to sort through. Sorry! This source does cite the CNN interview though

POPSRadio City Music Hall & Rockettes
I just clipped this 'cause: 1. I was born and raised in the Bronx (NY, NY). 2. My wife was a principal dancer in the Lido de Paris show at the Stardust Hotel/Casino in Las Vegas for 14 years. She was voted Showgirl of the Year twice; voting was done by her peers only: all showgirls/dancers in Vegas. She was the poster girl for the Lido show at the Stardust, with her picture on all the billboards as you enter Vegas on I-15. Her image was also on every slot and video poker machine in the Stardust. She cried the day the Stardust was imploded, even though it had been 16 years since she performed there. She and our daughter went to one of the final shows, and at the beginning, one long-time dancer (whom Jeannie had taught the routine to the girl when she was a rookie) stepped forward and shouted, "This one's for you, Jeannie (last name withheld)!" As line captain, Jeannie was responsible for training all the new girls the numbers and routines. Also, she got the girl a G-String,

POPSNo More Cash for Baseball Awarda Starting in 2013, the baseball writers will disqualify for post season awards any player that has a bonus clause in his contract for getting votes. That should take care of any appearance of impropriety - who's to say a writer can't be bribed into voting for a player? But it also makes pay for performance tougher. And with teams not required to disclose contract terms, could the new policy ever really be enforced?

When to have dawn prayers, where Mecca is. I thought Mecca was always to the East. Perhaps it details the dynamics of a pirouette.

POPSUneasy riders: Horses riskier than motorcycles "The hospital admission rate associated with horse-riding injuries is 0.49 per 1,000 hours, compared to a rate of 0.14 per 1,000 hours of motorcycle riding, according to the research. Among those treated for traumatic equestrian injuries, only 9 per cent had been wearing a helmet. Thirty-one per cent wore other protective equipment, such as Kevlar vests. Almost half of all riders who were seriously injured (48 per cent) suffered head injuries, and 54 per cent suffered chest injuries. Most riders were hurt by falling or being thrown from the horse, followed by being stomped or kicked. In Western riding there is a tradition of wearing a cowboy hat rather than a helmet. In English riding, a helmet is the norm."
