I wonder how people will react to a discovery of one such planet. Sadly it will probably be largely ignored. Not the 70's anymore.

Scientists Discover An Earth-Sized Planet Possibly With An Ocean
Anomaly100
by Anomaly100  4-22-2009    2
Scientists also discovered that the orbit of planet Gliese 581 d, which was found in 2007, was located within the "habitable zone" — a region around a sun-like star that would allow water to be liquid on the planet's surface, Mayor said. He spoke at a news conference Tuesday at the University of Hertfordshire during the European Week of Astronomy and Space Science. Gliese 581 d is probably too large to be made only of rocky material, fellow astronomer and team member Stephane Udry said, adding it was possible the planet had a "large and deep" ocean. "It is the first serious 'water-world' candidate," Udry said.

This is obviously a good plan that will probably bring many insights at a relatively low price. And yet.... I cannot escape the feeling that it is not very elegant; this primitive human trait of blowing things up, even if it is done in the name of science.

Overheated Earth may be locked in place
pokkets

It won't worry us, but they are trying to work out how likely life is in the universe, by considering the number of planets that have Earth-like conditions. The more they study, the more unusual Earth some of earth's features seem to be.

Peru meteorite may rewrite the record books
pokkets
by pokkets  3-11-2008    1
I suppose that's what record books are for, but there do seem to be a lot broken lately. The fact that this was going 50 times faster than expected is deep for more reasons than one. A faster object can have the effect of a much larger object. The size factor may mean we can get a puncture in the crust instead of a crater. Which may also mean an entirely different result. There is the basic physics equation Force=MassxAcceleration. The force involved in the case of a meteorite like this is the amount exerted by the planet to bring it from 24,000kph to a dead stop. Of course scientists are not only as surprised as they ever are, but there has to be another set of rules made, which means back to the drawing board. I'm sure the next thing they should do is build a bigger drawing board. Maybe they need to their calculations in pencil. There's the problem that every meteorite is unique, but there are many things that are likely to strike before a meteorite. Many are self destructive.

Many, Perhaps Most, Nearby Sun-Like Stars May Form Rocky Planets
tabsey
by tabsey  3-5-2008
One intriguing thing about meeting people from another planet would be to find the role of religion in their culture (if they bother with religion). If they don't, many would see the need to convert them, if they did, would it be the same as ours, or would some see the need to convert them. Sorry, just an aside.

Many Planets Like Earth

Of the billions of starts in the galaxy there are many with planets, but how many are rocky bodies like Earth. Many, if not most, according to a recent study.
