POPSNewsflash! Independents Not All Moderates! Wow! Not surprisingly, David Brooks,"Tool for the mainstream meme-ology" pushes the old notion that all independents are moderates, the swing vote. John Zogby (Co-authored by Zeljka Buturovic, PhD) writes in Huffington Post.................lays out numbers showing otherwise.

POPSHow America turns a blind eye to apartheid in the Middle East
Nevertheless, some of the brightest signs of hope for the Middle East come from Israelis fighting for justice for Palestinians. Neve Gordon may be about to lose his job as chair of the Department of Politics and Government at Ben Gurion University, for his support for Palestinian rights. He wrote last week: “For more than 42 years, Israel has controlled the land between the Jordan Valley and the Mediterranean Sea. And there’s Ofra Ben-Artzi. Earlier this month, she was arrested in the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood of East Jerusalem while going to comfort Palestinian friends, evicted to make way for Jewish families. She wrote: “I could see the ultra-Orthodox men and women, in their distinctive clothing, walking quietly along the road ... nor did the bars prevent me from seeing that Umm Kamel's tent, where she had been living since her own expulsion, was also gone. From the floor of the police car I saw what looked like a complete Judaisation of the neighbourhood. “We are walking

POPS"Joker" Posters: Florida Teenager Charged With Felony Vandalism Jensen said witnesses initially told investigators that a "couple of kids" were responsible for gluing the posters. He said the teenage suspect admitted to affixing dozens of the "hundreds" of posters throughout Clermont, a suburb of Orlando. Dozens of the posters first appeared earlier this month throughout Los Angeles. They portray Obama as Batman's nemesis from "The Dark Knight," with the word socialism printed above and below the president's face. U.S. Postal Inspector Ed Moffitt said Clermont Postmaster Willie Montgomery scraped off the "very, very adhesive" substance used to hang the posters with a pen knife or putty knife, which removed the mailbox's blue paint. The mailbox then had to be primed and repainted, adding to labor costs, which totaled roughly $200. "It wasn't like a Post-It note where you could easily pull it off," Moffitt said. "Nothing's free anymore."

POPS... 2D barcode ad campaign ... A few years ago I was shown an application that could generate URLs from pictures of a company's logos. We subsequently found ourselves discussing the possibility of "recognizing" Chinese and Japanese characters this way, in order to help western tourists. International road signs could also be "translated". Recently, it has become possible to display a "boarding pass" bar code on your cell phone at the airport. Obviously these types of applications are now starting to emerge (finally).

POPSSome Advice on Biking to Work These are some pretty good comments about commuters and biking to work. I would agree with most of these. I would also hope you are able to have a shower at work once you get there. OR, at least give yourself about 15 minutes to sit and cool off before you start your shift. And Christy has suggested have some alcohol wipes to clean your body. The alcohol acts as a coolant as it evaporates on your skin, and the wipes will help you clean up - in case you get a bit 'ripe' from the ride. This article is definitely a good read.

POPSPalestinians Out, Jews In
After receiving eviction notices last May, three Palestinian families constituting 53 people, including 20 children, were forcibly removed from their homes under High Court order at dawn on August 2. This is just one of several plans by various real estate groups such as Nahalat Shimon International and American businessmen such as Irving Moskowitz, to populate the areas surrounding the Old City with Jewish strongholds that sever Palestinian territorial contiguity in East Jerusalem. This prejudices any final resolution in which East Jerusalem would be the Palestinian capital. It is also in clear breach of Israel’s commitment under the Road Map. But these operations are backed by the Israel Lands Administration, the Jerusalem Municipality and the Israeli government, who are all working together to undermine any possibility for a two-state solution and are blatantly infringing on the basic human rights of the residents of what they deem to be the “united Jerusalem.”

POPSTexas cop uses Taser on 72-year-old great grandmother
Ooh, her use of profanity made him fear for his safety. What is this guy a freaking nancy-boy? I’ll bet he let a lot of drivers go by and chose her because she looked ‘safe’. Part of the responsibility for so many people basically blatantly ignoring speed limit signs falls on the cops themselves. They randomly enforce speed limits. I have witnessed speeders driving past police officers who do nothing. I have witnessed police officers driving over the speed limit and I can truthfully say there was no apparent reason for them to do so, because further down the road I would again see them driving along with the crowd. The lackadaisical enforcement gives drivers a false sense that they will not be ticketed and then along comes an officer who may have been bored or pushed by his municipality to raise money. They need to be serious about enforcement or continue to allow drivers to do whatever they please, just as they have for quite some time now.

POPSAfter Wars, Mass Rapes Persist
Of the 275 new sexual violence cases treated between January and April by Doctors Without Borders in Liberia, 28 percent involve children aged 4 or younger, and 33 percent involve children aged 5 through 12. “The rape of little children is common,” said Oretha Brooks, a social worker at the excellent Duport Road Clinic in Monrovia. “It happens on a daily basis.” She introduced me to Wynnie, a 9-year-old girl in her waiting room who had been raped twice. Yet there are signs of progress. Liberia’s president, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the first woman elected a president in Africa, has sent strong signals that rape is intolerable. Aid groups like the Carter Center are working to promote the rule of law and punish the rapists… Maybe the greatest reassurance came from Jackie, the resilient 7-year-old. She appeared to have overcome the stigma of rape, for she explained that she wanted to grow up to build shelters for abused girls, adding, “I want to be president for Liberia.”[/qu
