POPSWomen Test Limits "Now, women are taking courses run by nongovernmental organizations, getting educated and learning ways to improve their family incomes. Most important, the women have won over the men, she said. “Their minds have changed,” Najiba said. “They want to share decisions, not too far, but they want to give us some share.”

POPSCongress approval rating just 10% "A political establishment held in higher regard may have been able to hold together some kind of coalition of the willing," wrote Joel Achenbach in the Washington Post. "But distrust of the nation's leaders, from the leaders of Congress to the president, foreclosed that possibility." This was not mere rhetoric. Congress's public approval rating was down to 18% before the crisis hit. By some estimates, it is now 10% and falling. Washington has seen a "throw the bums out" mood before, notably Newt Gingrich's 1994 anti-government "Republican revolution". But this is something else. Like some others, Gingrich is calling for the resignation of Hank Paulson, the treasury secretary, for presiding over a train wreck and then failing to persuade people why $700bn was needed to get back on the rails.

POPSEconomic times may lead to a DIY Renaissance How many times have you been at a crafts fair and looked at an object for sale and said "I can build that"? Then why not do it? Buying the materials may sometimes cost a little more than just buying the product but you have more of a 'connection' to the item if you build it yourself. And you may have leftover material to start another project. Also, DIY is a form of 'revolution' that says we do not have to be dependent on others to have what we want. This is one reason why I enjoy growing my own food, aside from the greater variety and fresher quality than what I get at the supermarket, I don't have to worry about pesticides and other contamination. Who knows, you may discover a hidden talent.

POPSNotes From Saul Alinsky Praising Lucifer The 1st radical who fought the establishment. What do you think of this guy. This philosophy. Might there be a take-over of a larger magnitude than we can contemplate? Might both parties be "party" to it? While most of either one is really unaware but willingly - actively allowing themselves to be led to the trough - by the scattered few really in the know.(?) Both of the last two administrations? And the upcoming one ! How about Paulson. Hasn't it really been the slow crawl away from capitalism the last 20 years that has led to this mess? (Amid cries blaming dereg. to distract us.) The taking of the people's money as they make noises about rescuing our money? And the ushering in of the next level of double-talk: CLASS WARFARE! "Rise UP" C-O-M-M-U-N-I-ty !

POPSA transportation revolution Sep 28 - Half-motorbike, half-bicycle - an Austrian inventor says his creation, the "ErockIT", is a cool electric vehicle. "ErockIT" riders have to pedal to get the bike going, and the faster they pedal, the faster the motor goes. The bike can reach speeds of up to 80 kilometres, or almost 50 miles, per hour and its inventor says it could revolutionise transport. Joanna Partridge reports.

POPSOpen the Presidential Debates... or we will! Sounds like real American government to me! The internet is like the printing press was in the 1500s. It can bring much needed reformation and revolution like the press did back then. But we have to USE IT. "A computer terminal is not some clunky old television with a typewriter in front of it. It is an interface where the mind and body can connect with the universe and move bits of it about." ~ Douglas Noel Adams

POPSDaniel Boone (1734-1820)
the following says something we all know is true. While His status is Legendary, He was as are all of us Human. Something he would have been glad to admit. He had the same humanity as we all do, and beside the victories there were defeats as will be the course, but. He was prepared to venture into the unknown. and what he found can now be taken for granted, but it should Never be that way. Boone remains an iconic, if imperfectly remembered, figure in American history. He was a legend in his own lifetime, especially after an account of his adventures was published in 1784, making him famous in America and Europe. After his death, he was frequently the subject of tall tales and works of fiction. His adventures—real and legendary—were influential in creating the archetypal Western hero of American folklore. In American popular culture, he is remembered as one of the foremost early frontiersmen, even though the mythology often overshadows the historical details of his life.

POPSDevastation of World's Coral Imminent? According to a new study in Geophysical Research Letters, the world's coral could be devastated by rising CO2 levels. This isn't just an issue for science --- the tourist economy in various countries would also be devastated if coral reefs were to vanish. I've written about this before here: http://www.forbes.com/2008/03/06/travel-sustainable-coastlines-forbeslife-cx_rr_0307travel.html. More recently, I wrote about endangered natural wonders and the business of tourism here: http://www.forbes.com/travel/2008/09/15/travel-endangered-ecosystems-forbeslife-cx_rr_0915travel.html.

POPSSocial welfare programs do not keep a country from prosperity
The Nordic states have also worked to keep social expenditures compatible with an open, competitive, market-based economic system. Tax rates on capital are relatively low. Labor market policies pay low-skilled and otherwise difficult-to-employ individuals to work in the service sector, in key quality-of-life areas such as child care, health, and support for the elderly and disabled. The results for the households at the bottom of the income distribution are astoundingly good, especially in contrast to...American social policy. The U.S. spends less than almost all rich countries on social services for the poor and disabled, and it gets what it pays for: the highest poverty rate among the rich countries and an exploding prison population. Actually, by shunning public spending on health, the U.S. gets much less than it pays for, because its dependence on private health care has led to a ramshackle system that yields mediocre results at very high costs.

POPSHyperinflation special report Those of you who read Willhelm-note this-he is in my opinion correct to put the cause of our bankrupcy problems squarely on the Federal Reserve. Mismanagement of debt financing by govt only exacerbates the problems, and both parties are guilty. To continue to say the democrats are the only big spenders is looking kinda ludicrous right now.

POPSFirst President could teach the 44th a few things. As we race toward another election and we consider our votes for the next occupant of the White House perhaps it would do us all well to travel back in time and remember the virtues that made this country great. Avoid political factions and entangling alliances sounds like good advice to me. Perhaps our current bunch of political leaders would do well to heed the words of America's founding father George Washington. Washington went on to say that popular government depended on virtuous citizens and that only religion, which in the American context meant Christianity, could inspire such selfless behavior. He frequently asserted that religion helped promote virtue, order, and social stability, and praised the efforts of churches to make people "sober, honest, and good Citizens, and the obedient subjects of a lawful government." What say you?
