POPSWill Congress' defunding of ACORN expire Saturday? All it would take for ACORN funding to resume is the absence of any specific defunding language. If that language is not there, then federal agencies would again have the discretion of sending taxpayer dollars to ACORN. What happens in December could be the key to ACORN's future.

POPS"Violence is animalistic" meme reduces support for war More: Although right-wing authoritarians "typically show strong in-group bias and support for violence against out-groups, their heightened need to view themselves as non-animals makes them reticent to demonstrate violence when it is linked to animality," Motyl concludes. It should be noted that 104 of the 136 participants in the test were women. Before generalizing these results too widely, one would like to see them duplicated with a mostly male sample, preferably one from outside the walls of academia. Nevertheless, these are hopeful findings for those looking for ways to inspire peaceful resolutions to problems.

POPS Obama’s U.N. Double Talk by Anne Bayefsky The resolution we passed today will also strengthen the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty . We have made it clear that the Security Council has both the authority and the responsibility to respond to violations to this treaty. We’ve made it clear that the Security Council has both the authority and responsibility to determine and respond as necessary when violations of this treaty threaten international peace and security. That includes full compliance with Security Council resolutions on Iran and North Korea. Let me be clear: This is not about singling out individual nations. . . . e must demonstrate that international law is not an empty promise, and that treaties will be enforced. However, speaking today in Pittsburgh, Obama admitted that yesterday in Vienna, the United States, the United Kingdom, and France presented detailed evidence to the IAEA demonstrating that the Islamic Republic of Iran has been building a covert uranium . . .

POPSGadhafi Gets His Tent, plus
The warmongers and hatemongers want distractions and smear. While one of the most extraordinary and exciting speech I have ever heard took place, I see more stories about failed efforts to stop Gadhafi from setting up a tent. This clip, for example, spent half it's time on that tent non-issue and falsefly claimed it was successful. But no, Gadhafi got to put up his tent, made his speech and despite all the poor translation, smears of it being "rambling," confused, outrageous, etc. -- he got his points across and apparently the web is abuzz about it. The headline of this clip for example, said the speech at the UN "confused," -- but that was not true. It made several clear points. -- especial the very clear point that five nations always having veto power over Security Council resolutions was unfair. D'uh. Other proposed UN charter reforms were suggested. Also talk about the terrorism of nations with nukes, imperialism, colonialism evils, etc. - all valid. & so

POPSIsrael 'will attack Iran this year' Iran and the major world power are to start talks on the stand off over its nuclear programme, which stands in violation of United Nations resolutions, on Oct 1. Mr Obama's offer to talk to Iran without pre-conditions has made Israel nervous that Tehran will use detente as a cover to complete its drive for an atom bomb. "If Iran gained the bomb it would trigger a regional arms race with Saudi and Egypt quickly obtaining weapons," he said. "We would be living next to three Pakistans."

POPSIgnore the Feds! Tenth Amendment Center Pledge for the Constitution
The Constitution of the United States was a revolutionary document. "Before it, no government in history had seen its duties and restrictions so clearly and carefully defined" When it was being considered for ratification, there was strong opposition from famous American figures that included George Mason and Patrick Henry. "One major reason for this was a fear of too much power The founding generation spent their lives toiling under a tyranny - a government without limits. When the Constitution was written, it was done to limit the power of government. It was created under the principle of popular sovereignty - that 'We the People of the Several States' created the government, and all powers not delegated to it, were retained." Depending on how you count them, the People delegated approximately 35 powers to the federal government and not included in those powers are national health care, the creation of free speech zones, federal gun regulations, the war on drugs, and more.

POPS Is Obamacare Constitutional? “The Tenthers.” I recently started seeing a few references to this term in the standard places, Alternet, ThinkProgress, and elsewhere. But now it seems to have come from on high like the NeoCons did with every new buzzword during the Bush years. In fact, its usage has come on so fast and so regularly that someone over at the Washington Times picked up on the newly-approved jargon: Health care reform supporters at the Center for American Progress, the American Prospect, MSNBC and other outlets have deployed the term against Republicans who cite the 10th Amendment as reason not to create new programs. Some of the leading Republican proponents of the allegedly “dangerous” and “conspiratorial” theory include Sens. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma and Jim DeMint of South Carolina, and Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota. “As the nation emerges from the worst economic downturn in three generations, the tenthers would strip away the very reforms and economic

POPSMolecules revealed in all their glory by microscope
Gross revealed to physicsworld.com that there was an element of luck in discovering that carbon monoxide makes for a highly effective AFM tip because they had picked up the CO molecule by accident during routine use of their conventional AFM. The researchers were quick, however, to realize that the observed improvement in resolution made scientific sense because CO has been used in scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM), for many years, to improve resolution for the same reason. Now, this is funny how we can discover things even if we're not trying to. Gross says that he and his team intend to develop their research with the short term goal of improving resolution and building up a catalogue of chemical signatures for a range of different atoms and molecules. Eventually the CO-tipped AFM could be used to determine the identity of unidentified familiar molecules for use in chemical analysis. In the longer term, new forms of AFM such as this could be applied to the study of chemical rea

POPSObama Supports Treaty Outlawing Gun Possession Obama has promised Mexican President Felipe Calderon that he would urge the Senate to take up CIFTA. He is doing this under the cover of the drug cartel violence in Mexico. Obama and Calderon quoted a statistic echoed by the corporate media that 90% of the weapons seized in Mexican raids were purchased from U.S. gun shops and a reason why the U.S. needs to ratify this treaty. In fact, this is a lie — only a mere 17% of guns found at Mexico crime scenes have been traced to the U.S. CIFTA would bury the Second Amendment under “pertinent resolutions of the United Nations General Assembly.” It would criminalize ammunition reloading (defined as explosives manufacture) and gun assembly (including firearm kits and presumably breaking down weapons for cleaning or transport).

POPSThe states and the people vs. the U.S. of Centralization Something is changing in our political culture. All these resolutions have passed state legislatures. It’s not just lone “whacko” governors doing the deed. Deliberative bodies have decided these measures. Something big may be afoot. What is it? Opposition to bigness and “limitlessness” in the federal government. Randy Brogdon expressed the idea well enough. He said that Oklahoma is telling folks in Washington, DC, “loud and clear to end all federal mandates that are beyond the scope of powers specifically outlined in the Constitution.” He specifically mentioned the Patriot Act, No Child Left Behind and some provisions of Homeland Security as federal usurpations of state powers.

POPSWhat States Rights Really Mean
More from an article about the book, Reclaiming the American Revolution: The Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions and Their Legacy (New York: Palgrave Macmillan, 2004). By William J. Watkins, Jr. "An anonymous Jefferson (who was vice president at the time) penned what became known as the Kentucky Resolutions of 1798, which spelled out the objectionable aspects of the Alien and Sedition Acts as well as the states’ rightful response: nullification." "Madison penned similar resolutions that were approved by the Virginia legislature. Although Virginia and Kentucky found little support in other states for these ideas in 1798, with the passage of time all sections of the country would appeal at one time or another to what became known as the “Principles of ’98.” "the line of thought that culminated in the Resolutions of 1798 can be traced all the way back to the Virginia ratifying convention, where its central principles were laid out by prominent Virginia Federalists.
