POPSVatican will be asked to remove four bishops if they don’t quit
The Bishop of Limerick Dr Donal Murray, who was also an auxiliary bishop in Dublin before being promoted to Limerick, resigned from his position last week. It has emerged that if the four bishops — who say they did no wrong — do not stand down voluntarily on the principle of collective responsibility, Archbishop Martin will petition the Congregation of Bishops in Rome to remove them early in 2010. On Friday, the Irish Primary Principals' Network also wants the four bishops to be accountable for their actions — or inactions — in discharging their child protection responsibilities. Taoiseach Brian Cowen backed Archbishop Martin's stance, saying it was “a time for leadership and accountability” in the Catholic Church. Mr Cowen said: “The resignation of Bishop Murray is a welcome indication that those who are in positions of leadership and responsibility in the Church are facing up to their responsibility in the light of the very clear findings of the Murphy Commission.” Howeve

POPSAnne Mustoe: headmistress and round-the-world cyclist (1933-2009)
More: The glimpse of the lone cyclist which inspired her own ambition to cycle round the world came in January 1983. She said it took her four years from that defining moment to screw up her courage, resign her job and cycle into the sunrise, but she calculated that she had no ties, her stepsons were married off, and she could just afford it if she lived modestly until her pension came through.… All her incident-packed journeys were recounted in a warm, accessible, no-nonsense prose in which a wry, understated humour was coupled with indefatigable fortitude, enthusiasm and optimism, making light of robberies, injuries, freak floods, storms, desert heat waves, blizzards in the Rockies and ferocious winds in Jutland and Patagonia — and even of being knocked off her bike by a short-sighted nonagenarian in a Fiat Panda. Mustoe cycled off on her last expedition in May this year, but became ill in Syria. She died in Aleppo (Haleb). RIP, Ms. Mustoe.

POPSScientist In Climate Change 'Cover-Up' Storm Told to Quit In one of the most damning messages, Professor Jones appeared to respond to the death of a climate skeptic with the words ‘in an odd way this is cheering news!’. The leak has been a huge embarrassment to the climate unit at the University of East Anglia, which is a global leader in its field. Although there is no hint of evidence that climate change is not real, the emails appear to show researchers manipulating raw data and discussing how to dodge Freedom of Information requests. Yesterday, Mr Monbiot, who writes on green issues, said the emails could scarcely be more damaging. ‘I am now convinced that they are genuine, and I’m dismayed and deeply shaken,’ he said. ‘There are some messages that require no spin to make them look bad. ‘There appears to be evidence of attempts to prevent scientific data from being released, and even to destroy material that was subject to a Freedom of Information request.

POPSGeithner Under Fire From House Democrats and Republicans
policies are too closely geared to Wall Street. "Quite frankly, all the gambling on Wall Street is doing nothing to put people back to work in America and rebuild our economy," he said. The tension comes amid a growing unease from Democrats as they approach the 2010 midterm elections with the unemployment rate at 10.2%. Several Capitol Hill aides said support for Mr. Geithner has frayed, but noted he makes an easy target for critics because he is considered the face of White House economic policy. Overshadowing third-quarter economic growth of 3.5% are fears about the weak state of the job and housing markets. Rank-and-file lawmakers have come under increasing pressure at home to address the shaky economy, said several Democratic leadership aides. House Democratic leaders have vowed to take up job-creating legislation in December. Mr. Geithner has played a lead role in the White House's response to the economic crisis and tried to steer a middle ground .....

POPSResignations from the Guantanamo military commission Wolf, Major Robert Preston, and Captain John Carr were among the military lawyers assigned to prosecute the suspected terrorists held at the Guantanamo Bay detention camp. These three later requested reassignments because they had concerns that the proceeding were rigged to ensure no acquittals. On August 1, 2005, the Australian newspaper, "The Age", published an article based on the leaked memos from Preston and Carr. On August 3, 2005 "The Age" published another article that said Wolf had shared the concerns of the other two officers, and had also requested a transfer. Although Brigadier General Thomas Hemingway, the Legal Advisor to the Office of Military Commissions, tried to dismiss the memos as based on simple misunderstandings, an official investigation was conducted. The Chief Prosecutor to whom the memos were addressed, Colonel Fred Borch, subsequently resigned from the military.

POPSBeck's Guest List Included White Supremacists, Other Extremists Another Beck guest with a controversial past is Larry Pratt, the president of Gun Owners of America. Pratt appeared on the Fox News program on February 16, 2009. A Second-Amendment rights enthusiast, Pratt may be best known for being forced to resign as co-chair of Pat Buchanan's 1996 presidential campaign because of ties to white supremacist and extremist groups. The same year, the Southern Poverty Law Center reported that Pratt was contributing to an anti-Semitic periodical titled "United Sovereigns of America." Gun Owners of America, meanwhile, was discovered donating money to a white supremacist attorney's group.

POPSTo whom it may concern: I resign More: I want to return to a time when life was simple. When all you knew were colours, multiplication tables, and nursery rhymes, but that didn't bother you, because you didn't know what you didn't know and you didn't care. All you knew was to be happy because you were blissfully unaware of all the things that should make you worried or upset. I want to believe in the power of smiles, hugs, a kind word, truth, justice, peace, dreams, the imagination, mankind, and making angels in the snow. So.... here's my cheque book and my car keys, my company badge, my credit card bills, and all 32 of my computer passwords. I am officially resigning from adulthood. And if you want to discuss this further, you'll have to catch me first, cause, TAG!! YOU'RE IT!!

POPSDobbs to Resign from CNN; Roger Ailes Meeting "Buzz"
There has also been talk Dobbs could be headed for Fox News, another storyline Stelter revealed last month. Transcript from Nov. 11 broadcast below: Tonight I want to turn to a personal note, if I may, and address a matter that has raised some curiosity. This will be my last broadcast here on CNN, where I've worked for most of the past 30 years, and where I have many friends and colleagues whom I admire deeply and respect greatly. I'm the last of the original anchors here on CNN and I'm proud to have had the privilege to helping to build the world's first news network. I'm grateful for the many opportunities that CNN has given me over the many years. I've tried to reciprocate with a full measure of my ability. Over the past six months it's become increasingly clear that strong winds of change have begun buffeting this country and affecting all of us. And some leaders in media, and in politics and business have been urging me to go beyond the role at CNN . . .

POPSThree more quit over Nutt sacking Professor Nutt was sacked more than a week ago in response to views he expressed in an academic journal in January and a lecture he later gave at King's College London. He spoke out against the government's decision to toughen penalties for possessing marijuana and argued that the drug is less harmful than tobacco or alcohol.

POPSOakland Mayor Ron Dellums needs to explain tax mess or resign More: The debt owed to this city by Dellums is incalculable and there is nothing but pride - or arrogance - standing between him and a full public disclosure of the facts surrounding his tax problem. Anything short of that constitutes unacceptable behavior by a public official and violates the public contract between an elected official and the constituency the office serves. I tried to reach the mayor for comment - but he declined to speak with me, his press secretary Paul Rose told me. No one has asked Dellums to disclose anything that any other politician in the same set of circumstances wouldn't be asked to explain. If he cannot provide a public explanation for a controversy that has become another national embarrassment for this city, it's difficult to see how continuing in his current position is going to be good for anyone - either him or Oakland's citizens.

POPSMitterrand refuses to resign over book The current furor was fanned by Mitterrand's vocal support for filmmaker Roman Polanski, wanted in Los Angeles by authorities who want him to serve a sentence for his 1977 conviction for having sex with a 13-year-old girl. Mitterand told TF1 he was "too emotional" when he denounced Polanski's arrest in Switzerland as "horrifying." Mitterand said that he may move to a more congenial environment, such as Ireland, in the near future.

POPSGOP To Draft Resolution Designed To Oust Rangel: Run Gov. Paterson for Seat!!! "I'm disappointed in the Congress because everyone's entitled to a full hearing and they're not giving me that," Rangel said. When asked how he feels about Congressman Carter's move to have Rangel step aside from Ways and Means, the Harlem Democrat said, "I'm disappointed in him." During the event Rangel service notice he didn't want any embarrassing questions about the growing ethics storm around him. "I would hate to see anyone attempt to mar this with questions that are not directly related to this exciting event," Rangel said. And here's a new twist. Highly placed Democratic sources told CBS 2 HD they have discussed the possibility of using one damaged New York politician to get rid of another. It centers on having Rangel resign, and giving Gov. David Paterson a dignified way to leave Albany by running for Rangel's congressional seat.

POPS Pay Czar Targets Salary Cuts Mr. Feinberg is expected to issue by mid-October his determination on compensation packages for 175 of the most-highly compensated executives and employees at the seven firms he oversees. The move will further reshape pay at those firms and could complicate efforts by some of those seven companies to attract top executives and employees. The issue could be particularly acute for Bank of America, which is searching for a successor to Kenneth Lewis, who announced plans to resign as chief executive of the company last week. A Bank of America spokesman said the bank declined to comment on compensation issues regarding the chief executive. "We have been in close communication with Feinberg and our compensation going forward is very much in line with his guidance," the spokesman said.
