Blackwater Is Here to Stay
papananook
by papananook  Yesterday 3:16 AM
Anyone who thinks Blackwater is in serious trouble is dead wrong. Even if - and this is a big if - the company pulled out of Iraq tomorrow, here is the cold, hard fact: business has never been better for Blackwater, and its future looks bright. More on this in a moment. Back to the matter at hand. Complaining that negative media attention and congressional and criminal investigations are hurting business and that the Blackwater name had become a catch-all target for anti-war protesters, the company’s brass told the AP that Blackwater was shifting its focus to its other areas of government contracting, like law enforcement and military training, as well as logistics. ”The experience we’ve had would certainly be a disincentive to any other companies that want to step in and put their entire business at risk,” said Erik Prince, Blackwater’s reclusive, 39 year-old founder and owner. Company president Gary Jackson said Blackwater has become like the “Coca-Cola” of war contractors, a b

Moyers: Conservatives had their chance and Blew it!
papananook
by papananook  7-14-2008    4
On top of such bungled calamities as Iraq and Katrina… GEORGE W. BUSH: Again I want to thank you all for- and Brownie you're doing a heck of a job. BILL MOYERS: The conservative regime sent spending into the stratosphere…borrowed trillions from the future to pay for their agenda, and rewarded their wealthy base with huge tax cuts. Earmarks and contracts fattened lobbyists on K Street, which Newt Gingrich and Tom DeLay honed into a ruthless shakedown machine exploited by conservative movement stars like Grover Norquist, Ralph Reed, and Jack Abramoff. JACK ABRAMOFF: Senator, I respectfully invoke the privileges previously stated. SEN. KENT CONRAD: And I'd say to you Mr. Abramoff, shame on you. BILL MOYERS: And after crusading for the impeachment of Bill Clinton, conservatives pushing family values turned out to be their own worst enemies. Some of their foot soldiers in politics and the religious right were outed for adultery, stalking Capitol Hill pages, soliciting sex. Be

This gives you an idea of how stupid these people are. In my piece Played Out , I argued that this sort of action would wind up with the law being struck down and, perhaps, even the amendment being reconsidered. Send someone to prison for this and people will see just how unjust the whole thing is. The problem with the religious right is that they have themselves convinced that people don't think they're crazy. As a result, they say crazy-assed stuff like this all the time.

How The Greens Captured Energy Policy
merrie
by merrie  7-11-2008
Other aspects of the Green argument have also collapsed. New discoveries off Brazil and in the Gulf of Mexico have nearly doubled international oil reserves, pushing backwards from the "peak oil" date. And global warming, that notorious by-product of "oil addiction," has faded to the point that its advocates are now reduced to threatening dissenters with prison. It has gone almost completely unacknowledged that with oil shale, offshore deposits, and new resources such as the hydrocarbon sludge deposits off B.C. and Alaska, the OPEC of the late 21st century is going to be right here. That's a goal worth working toward. Breaking the power of the Greens is yet another possible benefit. Energy reform is an egg and rock situation for the Democrats. From the old Irish proverb: "When the rock hits the egg, alas for the egg. When the egg hits the rock, alas for the egg."

New And Not Improved! New York Times
merrie
by merrie  7-5-2008
the death penalty and gun control. Mr. Obama endorsed the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the District of Columbia’s gun-control law. We knew he ascribed to the anti-gun-control groups’ misreading of the Constitution as implying an individual right to bear arms. But it was distressing to see him declare that the court provided a guide to “reasonable regulations enacted by local communities to keep their streets safe.” We were equally distressed by Mr. Obama’s criticism of the Supreme Court’s barring the death penalty for crimes that do not involve murder. Mr. Obama’s shifts are striking because he was the candidate who proposed to change the face of politics. We don’t want any “redefining” on these big questions. This country needs change it can believe in.

Was right on target. When I first saw this clip, I couldn't believe how wonderful it would be if this was not fiction. Well, it seems the Supreme Court may not be as politically polarized as I thought but just one more Republican justice and it will be. When that happens a case like this will only be a fairytale. I can't embed it any longer but you can view it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqlGoxfAkuU See John Stewart's hilarious view of Scalia and the Supreme Court. Where We Stand
AtlLiberal
by AtlLiberal  6-24-2008
I was stuck by the ambiguity of by which the respondents of this survey viewed religion. It seems that if they were better informed of their own faith they would be forced to abandon their present views of tolerance. Among high profile religious leaders we see lip service towards tolerance but a solid underpinning of a them versus us mentality. "We are the true faith" seems to have become blunted somewhat in the roll your own religious climate of today. The main article seems to be pretty fair and objective. Take a look for yourself.

Jew baiting takes on a whole different meaning with these extreme fascist youths more reminiscent of Nazis that peaceful religious Jews. How unsure they must be of their position and faith that they behave like TERRORISTS. These terrorists demonstrate very little respect for the Christian Bible. What do the Christian Zionists have to say? Is anyone persecuting them?

Pope Mesmerizes Bush Toward Catholicism, Religion of Tyrants
blueridge
by blueridge  6-15-2008    3
Not surprising considering his religious superstition, theological ignorance, and false Christian views of war (contrary to Christian principles of "Just Wars" of self defense alone) and worship of democracy as a means of saving the world through military Crusades. He would fit right in with tyrants of Holy Roman Empires of the past. The Tower of St. John impressed him--Rome mesmerizes its ignorant victims through superstition, priest-craft, and relics and symbols, without which it is essentially empty. By the way, this is not to let pagans escape, for some of them were also among the greatest tyrants of imperial wars as well--i.e. Alexander the Great (who was a bisexual pedophile), Caligula, Nero, Pharaohs of Egypt and Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon to name a few. Babylon the Great is typified in the Bible as a final world empire that will be destroyed, headed by a false Christian leader, whom the Reformers believed were Roman Popes but would also fit false Christian presidents
