Madonna Angers Church for Being Herself
AtlLiberal
by AtlLiberal  8-26-2009    4
Aw. She's been disrespectful towards the Church. A careful reading of the Church's quotes indicate that they'd be fine with the concert if she restricted her songs to Christian hymns and her "stage scenarios" to kneeling in prayer. I'll wager that the tour promoters couldn't be happier, as the concert in Sophia is all but sold out, encouraged no doubt, by the condemnation of the Church.

"The bigger the state, the smaller its people."
willhelm
by willhelm  5-12-2009    4
" The state sucks out creativity and dynamism just as much as secularism does. Why do anything for yourself when the state will do it for you? Why take care of others when the state will do it for you? Why have ambition when the state is there to ensure that few or no individuals are rewarded more than others? America has been the center of energy and creativity in almost every area of life because it has remained far more religious than any other industrialized Western democracy and because it has rejected the welfare state social model. 'Empathy' And The Court
merrie
by merrie  5-5-2009    2
An "empathetic" judge who underestimates the power of ideas he opposes, stirs up the hornets and wasps. Traditional moral and religious convictions enjoy no right to "empathy"? That's an odd one. An empathetic court can make up the law as it goes? Odder still. Brace for empathy. It's coming. But so are more of the kinds of quarrels and divisions that empathetic jurists like Souter -- or, worse, John Paul Stevens, who remains on the court, still legislating -- can cause to break open. The modern Supreme Court is an agent of disruption rather than harmony, rupture rather than healing. The wise justice -- Nino Scalia is one model -- looks at the law, goes with the intent of those who passed it, leaves it to later lawmakers to change or abandon it. It's what judging used mainly to be about -- before the coming of empathy.

Defecting To Faith
debbyski
by debbyski  5-3-2009    3
"We are more than cells, synapses and sex drives. We are amazing, mysterious creatures forever in search of something greater than ourselves." Churches, mosques and synagogues nurture and celebrate this. Being regularly surrounded by a community that shares your convictions and reinforces them through literature, art and ritual is incredibly powerful, and yes, spiritual.

Tattoos
ofcapri
by ofcapri  3-26-2009    5
There's certainly evidence that women had tattoos on their bodies and limbs from figurines c. 4000-3500 B.C. to occasional female figures represented in tomb scenes c. 1200 B.C. and in figurine form c. 1300 B.C., all with tattoos on their thighs. Also small bronze implements identified as tattooing tools were discovered at the town site of Gurob in northern Egypt and dated to c. 1450 B.C. And then, of course, there are the mummies with tattoos, from the three women already mentioned and dated to c. 2000 B.C. to several later examples of female mummies with these forms of permanent marks found in Greco-Roman burials at Akhmim.

"Tatoos of the Cross"
kris_tea
by kris_tea  3-21-2009    1
"While cross tattoos are no longer widespread among urban Copts, they remain popular among Egyptian Christian villagers as reminders of particular blessings and religious vows. To these Copts of both the past and present, cross tattoos have not been a sign of teenage rebellion or fashion forwardness. Instead, they have been enduring reminders of their Christian faith—showing the Copts' dedication to the One who bore the everlasting scars of mercy, grace, and truth."

Tattoos
ofcapri
by ofcapri  3-9-2009
What is the earliest evidence of tattoos? In terms of tattoos on actual bodies, the earliest known examples were for a long time Egyptian and were present on several female mummies dated to c. 2000 B.C. But following the more recent discovery of the Iceman from the area of the Italian-Austrian border in 1991 and his tattoo patterns, this date has been pushed back a further thousand years when he was carbon-dated at around 5,200 years old.

Remedial Fascism for Confused Conservatives
dulios
by dulios  2-9-2009    4
Hitler said Germany had collapsed because of loose morals, religious tolerance, the liberal media and all the usual boogeymen that we hear about today from conservatives. What we see with Jonah Goldberg and his entourage of pseudointellectuals is an effort to destroy the meaning of the word "Fascism" and to reduce Hitler to a buffoonish anti-Semite, rather than a devious master propagandist.

The small clip from the end of an article from India brings up an interesting point that is largely ignored in the US. In some regards it is reminiscent of the "don't ask, don't tell" policy enacted by Clinton in the 90s in regards to gays in the military.

Tongue In Cheek depiction of EU - entropa moasaic
boozich
by boozich  1-15-2009
huge art work called Entropa was installed in the foyer of the main European Council building in Brussels. It was commissioned to mark the start of the Czech six-month presidency of the EU. And it was meant to depict the essence of each of the 27 member states captured by different artists... but, only one artist did the eight-tonne mosaic ...He has not accepted any of the commissioning money, though his art work is probably now worth more than its proposed fee.

Proof that Religious History can Repeat Itself!!
brightlight4
by brightlight4  1-9-2009    15
When the Arabs conquered the peninsula in the early 8th century, they tore down the church and began building their great mosque, which - commensurate with Cordoba's importance as the centre of Muslim power in Spain - became the largest mosque in all of Islam after that of Caaba, in Arabia. When the Christians re-conquered Cordoba in 1236, they did with the mosque what they did in all of the cities of Andalucia - instead of bothering to build a new church, they simply "converted" the building to Christianity and set up an altar in the middle. In the 16th century, this modest gothic insert was enlarged and given its current Renaissance - and later, baroque - styles, resulting in the strange hybrid which we now see, with its ornately carved altar and pews (the choir is distinguished by the fact that it was built entirely in mahogany brought from America).
