Gravity Mysteries: What is Gravity?
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  12-31-2009    7
There are still two problems with this, though. First, we have yet to find any proof of the existence of these hypothetical particles, which have been dubbed "gravitons". Secondly, when quantum field theory is applied to gravity, it is prone to give nonsensical answers to straightforward questions. "These are fundamental obstructions that need to be overcome," Seven things that don't make sense about gravity

Getting Closer to String Theory
dopesick
by dopesick  11-13-2009
Without string theory, physicists need two theories to explain how the universe works. General relativity explains gravity, while the other three basic forces are explained by the “standard model.” Moreover, gravity has been very difficult to reconcile with quantum theory, a problem for which string theory offers a solution.

Obama To Receive Special Nobel Prize For Replacing Einstein's Theory
foxyarse
by foxyarse  11-11-2009    1
"Now is that solid or ain't it solid? I mean, except for that fart?" "It's solid!" "No little energy atoms with electrons, wantons and morons!" The president then explained what an idiot Einstein actually was but everyone thought he was smart because he knew a lot of long words. So you heard it here first. President Barack Hussein Obama has won a special Nobel Prize, replacing and disgracing that egghead, Einstein and his energy theory. Obama went on to say, "Look we is all mad up of those atoms and electrons...they repel each other...they are racist....its all relative...you know there are 11 other universes...me and Michelle are hoping to retire to one of them."

He is best known for his theory of relativity and specifically mass-energy equivalence, E = mc2. Einstein received the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics "for his services to Theoretical Physics, and especially for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect."

Invisible hand in invisible matter. Dark matter might not exist.
dopesick
by dopesick  10-10-2009
Dr Famaey added, "If we account for our observations with a modified law of gravity, it makes perfect sense to replace the effective action of hypothetical dark matter with a force closely related to the distribution of visible matter." The implications of the new research could change some of the most widely held scientific theories about the history and expansion of the universe. Lead researcher Dr. Gianfranco Gentile at the University of Ghent concludes, "Understanding this puzzling conspiracy is probably the key to unlock the formation of galaxies and their structures." What about NASA's direct proof on dark matter's existance? Broken study? This is actually makes sense, but so far is a little hard to accept. Does anyone have any ideas about this?

ACORN – Not Just Pimpin’
merrie
by merrie  9-16-2009    2
The fallout of this investigation thus far at “street level” is four low-level ACORN “field Negros” have been fired. Don’t expect the Rathke’s to get hurt. “Socialist” please! Here is what an ACORN spokesperson had to say: ACORN chief organizer Bertha Lewis would not defend the employees in the video, but insists that the videos “are doctored, edited, and in no way the result of the fabricated story being portrayed by conservative activist ‘filmmaker’ O’Keefe and his partner in crime.” What Bertha should have admitted is that the black women in thesse videos have been “doctored” and “edited,” and that the doctoring and editing has been done systematically by the Democrat Party. These women are the product of the Democrats “seek and destroy” mission within the black community. The outcome is a moral relativity that has these black women willing to put criminals in American communities, under the guise of “the greater good.”

How Can Galaxies Recede Faster than the Speed of Light?

One sad side effect of this expansion is that most of the galaxies will have receded over this horizon in about 3 trillion years, and future cosmologists will never know there's a great big Universe out there.

The beauty and terror of science
ratilfar
by ratilfar  8-10-2009
A good history of science unreels like the practice of science itself. It wends through a world of experiments until a new reality arises. But the more layered story of that journey is that science is not just a process but is the men and women performing it. In his radiant new book, "The Age of Wonder," Holmes treats us to the amazing lives of the pioneering sailors and balloonists, astronomers and chemists of the Romantic era. Making good on the book's subtitle, he takes us on a dazzling tour of their chaotic British observatories and fatal explorations in African jungles, showing us "how the Romantic generation discovered the beauty and terror of science."

Black Hole created in US lab
cakebelly
by cakebelly  7-25-2009    4
more: Professor Zhang and colleagues are experts in metamaterials and their latest creation is the most impressive yet: modeling black holes by taking "analogy" out of writing and into actual hard science. By designing a metamaterial whose reaction to light looks the same as another phenomena, you can effectively examine that phenomena. This is because "looks like" isn't based on color, or shape, but on having exactly the same equations defining its motion - so that it no longer matters if it's because of metamaterials reaction to light or general relativity's to matter. By setting up this "optical-mechanical analogy" you can study an all-consuming gravitational crusher in a simple chip of material.

The links between mental illness and creativity
cakebelly
by cakebelly  5-5-2009    1
continues (long article at source): Mental illnesses have been around for thousands of years. Evolutionary theory suggests that in order for them to be still here, there must be some kind of survival advantage to them. If they were wholly bad, it's argued, natural selection would have seen them off long ago. In some cases the advantage is clear. Anxiety, for example, can be a mental illness with severe symptoms and consequences, but it is also a trait that at a non-clinical level has survival advantages. In healthy proportions, it keeps us alert and on our toes when threats are sensed.

Islam Under Scrutiny
dl211
by dl211  3-27-2009    25
Also, relative to the Islamic principle of predestination, the doctrine of abrogation seemingly presumes that Allah was predestined to be wrong or predestined to change his mind, while also convenient introducing an element of moral relativity, justifying any action that benefited Islam, and again, pretty much Muslim men. This principle also redefined the nature of “good and “evil”; making “good,” any act or situation beneficial to Muslims, and “evil,” any act or situation not beneficial to Muslims. If an act or situation, no matter how destructive or repugnant, benefits Islam, it is by its very nature moral, justifiable, and entirely acceptable under this principle. Conveniently, as a means of disavowing the horrific or inconvenient within Islam, Muslim apologists often point to the Koran as proof that a particular horrific or inconvenient aspect of their culture is in fact, not really a part of their culture after all, because it is not specifically referenced within the Kora
