POPSRegulation.gov- A Direct Link to Regulation Public comments are being taken until September 15th for proposed changes in the Endangered Species Act and I the Interagency Cooperation. Writing as many e-mails as possible would perhaps be another way to help stop this nonsense.

POPSGod's honest truth? The law is being presented in Sweden as if it mostly concerned fundamentalist Christian sects in the backwoods; but the Christian Democratic party, which represents such people if anyone does, is perfectly happy with the new regulation. There is little doubt that combating Islamic fundamentalism is the underlying aim,

POPS'Justice' Dept. Wants to Erase 4th Amendment, FBI to Have Gestapo Power
Attorney General Mukasey (neocon) wants to give broad powers to the FBI as if the 4th amendment is nothing at all instead of supreme law. The Justice Department said Wednesday that in light of requests from members of Congress for more information, Mr. Mukasey would agree not to sign the new guidelines before a Sept. 17 Congressional hearing. Can you believe this absolute corruption and blatant attempt to usurp power for federal policing? There will actually be a hearing in America's Congress to determine whether the 4th amendment will still stand--which forbids searches without probable cause! This right after the annual Sept. 11th propaganda campaign to justify ANY NEW POWERS the government wants, the Constitution notwithstanding. Mukasey has no Constitutional authority to sign or authorize this (the Constitution is above Mukasey, as well as Bush and Congress), but he wants to, after a good propaganda campaign to justify it as "necessary".

POPSI'm Pro Choice but I Agree with the Bush Administration on This One I'm all for a woman's right to choose if she wants to end a pregnancy. But surprisingly, I'm with the Bush administration on protecting healthcare workers who wish not to be involved in abortions. Just as a woman should have the right to choose (after consulting with the father of course), doctors and other healthcare professionals should be able to choose not to participate in procedures they are inherently against.

POPSJohn McCain, Friend of Monopolies I think there are two reasons McCain invokes Teddy Roosevelt. 1. Roosevelt wasn't a Republican in the modern sense, but a Republican in the original sense -- i.e., a progressive. McCain hopes to signal some that his "maverick" label actually means something. 2. Teddy Roosevelt is the one face on Mt. Rushmore that Americans know the least about. In the end, I'd say it's more 2 than 1.

POPSCheney Aide getting Global Warming Portfolio at Energy? "The result: One of the most ardent opponents of government regulation within the government would be put in a key decision-making position where global warming policies are set. Said Jason K. Burnett, who as a deputy associate administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency tangled with Hutto over global warming until leaving the government: "I can't think of a case where Chase advocated more environmental or health protections." As for placing Hutto in the Energy Department at this late date, the Post, quoting Francesca Grifo of the Union of Concerned Scientists, notes: "In coming months, Hutto could make policy decisions that the next administration would find difficult to reverse quickly.""

POPSPresident for Internationalization of Peacemaking Process in Georgia Speaking about scheduled meeting of the leaders in Tbilisi Presiden stressed that its aim is forming basis for talks with regard to all the conditions and positions of the sides. “It is clear that for Georgia a question of territorial integrity is very topical”, - he added. Another question important for Georgia, as President Yushchenko noted, is participation of peacemakers with good reputation in the process of regulation of the conflict. “It is clear that the peacekeepers who started shooting people do not deserve confidence. Today we must internationalize the peacemaking format and to make it open for other countries … I am sure that such countries as Ukraine could send their peacemakers within the framework of international mandate to demonstrate clear-cut guarantees of the obligations that may appear in the nearest future”, - he said.

POPSSeals help measure Southern Ocean It's not easy to measure for us to measure the currents, and temperatures under the ice, but the seals have no trouble. A simple solution to what may otherwise have been a difficult problem to solve. The ice caps and polar oceans can provide critical information concerning the temperature regulation of the planet so details of changes are necessary to contribute to any picture we might pretend to have. I wonder if they've tried penguins?

POPSHuman Obesity Genes Revealed Based On Fly Experiments As De Luca reports, "We found one variant to be associated with weight and lean mass in both ethnic groups. This variant was also associated with height, total fat mass and HDL-cholesterol, but only in European American women. A different variant was associated with triglyceride levels and HDL-cholesterol in African American women." The use of flies in a study of human obesity may seem strange, but according to De Luca "Insects store fat like mammals do, as lipid droplets accumulated in the fat body, the functional equivalent of both mammalian liver and white adipose tissue". She adds that, "Drosophila share many components of fat biosynthesis, degradation and regulation with humans, including many of those implicated in diabetes and obesity".
