bikehacks: Illuminate your bike — for free!
Lexica
by Lexica  11-13-2009    1
More: How I came to acquire this stash of reflective material (self-adhesive 3M-type stuff) was by contacting a shop that does signs (like highway exit signs, marking guardrails, etc.) and asked if they had any scraps they’d otherwise be tossing out. They said to come by and I got several 8×10 sized pieces for FREE! I started cutting the pieces to fit various parts of the bike – starting with items like fenders, and eventually working to the frame, fork, rear rack, and wheels. Since then I’ve been experimenting with making wheel (spoke) reflectors using the bottoms of microwave pasta dishes as backing material. There’s one pic of a drop-bar old 10-speed I installed one of these experimental wheel reflectors on – it’s on the rear wheel, zip-tied to the spokes.

Cloud-seeding ships could combat climate change
Mohir
by Mohir  9-9-2008
The 300-tonne unmanned ships used to seed the clouds would be powered by the wind, but would not use conventional sails. Instead they would be fitted with a number of 20 m-high, 2.5 m-diameter cylinders known as “Flettner rotors” that would be made to spin continuously. This spinning would generate a force perpendicular to the wind direction, propelling the ship forward if it is oriented at right angles to the wind. around 1500 ships would be needed altogether to counteract a carbon doubling, at a cost of some £1m to £2m each. This would involve an initial fleet expanding by some 50 ships a year if the scheme is to keep in step with the current rate of increase in atmospheric carbon-dioxide levels.

Plan to build telescopes from Moon dust
pokkets

I can't imagine them doing it any other way. After what we've seen with Hubble, The view from the dark side during a full moon, the improvement is likely to be the same magnitude. seems like the deeper we look into the stars, the bigger the Universe seems to get. Maybe we could get clearer readings that would show us where a few more 'earth-like' planets are.

Moonowler
by Moonowler  7-9-2007
One 2,000 kilometers in diameter and about 10 microns thick, with a weight of about 100 megatons under Earth's gravity. Early's shield would have been either opaque or else transparent in the form of a Fresnel lens (the kind of lens used in lighthouses, in which the amount of material required is reduced from that needed in a conventional spherical lens because the lens is broken into concentric annular sections).

Materials That Reflect No Light
Moonowler
by Moonowler  7-7-2007
The work is part of a growing effort among researchers to alter the properties of materials, such as their optical properties, by controlling nanoscale structures. Reflectivity is related to the difference between the amount that two substances, such as air and glass, refract or bend light. Reducing the difference reduces reflection where two materials meet. In the new coating, each successive layer bends light more as light moves from air into a substrate.

Mitsubishi Electric Achieves World's Highest 18% Conversion Efficiency in Practical Size Polycrystal
shankargallery
by shankargallery  6-2-2007
This solar cell has incorporated three proprietary technologies in an effort to increase efficiency. Firstly, reflectivity from the acceptance surface has been reduced through RIE (reactive ion etching) microfabrication using a nano-sized mask material. This resulted in the increased amount of absorbed light. Secondly, the lowering of electrical performance in crystalline has been suppressed through a new electrode material. Thirdly, effective electrical output surface area has been expanded by thinning grid collector electrodes. Through these technologies, Mitsubishi achieved the world's highest conversion efficiency of 18%.
