Capitan Reef
amgumen
by amgumen  10-29-2009
Over millions of years, segments of the Capitan Reef were uplifted, and much of the sediment was eroded away from the more resistant limestone reef materials. The Guadalupe Mountains, stretching to the northeast from El Capitan in Texas to near Carlsbad, New Mexico, are one of these uplifted portions of the reef. The southern end of the range is included within Guadalupe Mountains National Park. As this uplift continued, groundwater that supported some of the material in many of the caverns drained away, and material collapsed to form large underground chambers, such as those in Carlsbad Caverns National Park. Because the reef was built, in large part, through the accumulation of dead marine organisms that incorporated calcium carbonate into their structures, fossils are abundant in the reef deposits throughout the exposed portions of the Guadalupe Mountains.

Koh Samui Hotel Reservation – Get One At The Fasting Growing Tourist Destination
samui3hotel
by samui3hotel  9-16-2009
Blessed with long beaches, attractive coral reefs, exotic coconut tree farms and majestic Buddhist status, Koh Samui is one of the fastest growing tourist spots in the world. Whether you are looking for a honeymoon destination or large Buddha towers, you are sure to see them all here. Koh Samui is the 3rd biggest island in Thailand. Its rise as a popular tourist spot was nothing short of a miracle. During the initial part of 70s, it was a mere agricultural island. Rising economy and space shortage in larger cities as the years passed, made holiday goers look out for more peaceful areas in nature, away from the hustle and bustle of urban life. Majestic villas, fairways, hill side hotels and other holiday gateways are the reasons for it to be one of the most popular tourist spots in the world. Now there is a big queue for reservation in Koh Samui’s resorts such as the Park Samui. Tourists throughout the world come to this spot. Due to its astounding nightlife and grand shopping malls,

Giant Sea Worm Terrorizes Aquarium
Cushla
by Cushla  9-13-2009
As in all good horror films, Barry went about all that bloodcurdling business in the shadows to begin with, stealthily stalking the victims. Unobserved by the all staff cast at Newquay’s Blue Reef Aquarium, the four-foot long sea worm attacked and mutilated coral reefs and apparently maimed a prize Tang fish in the tank he had infiltrated. When alarm bells about an intruder started ringing among the workers, the cunning critter devoured not only the bait but also the hooks on traps that had been set overnight. Barry even bit through a 20-pound fishing line, before eventually being lured out with fish scraps in a gripping climax, as the aquarium display was dismantled rock by rock. Thought to be a tropical polychaete worm, Barry is a real life sea monster, armed with sharp, powerful jaws that can slice prey in two, and covered with thousands of bristles purportedly capable of numbing a human with their sting. When in predatory mode, these omnivorous creatures will bury their long bodie

Hijacked by climate change?
pennyserenade
by pennyserenade  8-30-2009
"Some believe a narrow focus on climate is justified - either because they feel it is so much more serious than every other issue, or because they feel there is real political momentum to solve it now and time enough to deal with everything else once that is done. But others argue there is no time; that society needs, urgently, to see the wider picture of global decline in all its complexity - and that climate concerns have hijacked the broader agenda, to the detriment of us all."

Warming World May Mean Smaller Animals
Fast T friend
by Fast T friend  7-21-2009
This relationship was known to exist in nature, with warmer environments tending to be dominated by smaller-sized species, said study leader Martin Daufresne of Cemagref Aix-en-Provence (a French governmental research institute). But what Daufresne and his colleagues aimed to do with their study was "was to test if this known relationship in ecology was working for climate change," he said. They found that it's working.

A Soldier's Story Part I
merrie
by merrie  7-14-2009    2
Return to Tarawa to discover a battlefield covered in garbage and human waste, and the unspeakable disgrace of having hundreds of fallen American heroes " including a man posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor " buried under parking lots and septic tanks. There are somewhat graphic images, and a few moments of salty language " but this is something I would encourage you to watch with your families, simply because it is so heartbreaking. If we do not often remember the cost of our freedoms, we will surely lose them. Listening to what these boys did for us " and that’s what they were: teen-aged boys, for the most part " brought home to me the debt we owe these remarkable men. It is the very least we can do to listen to their stories. They are amazing stories, funny and tragic and full of wisdom, and I mean to tell as many of them as I can, from World War 2 up through the present.

Ho Chi Minh City Tour
vietnamtourpackages
by vietnamtourpackages  6-15-2009
One of the region's top attractions is the Cat Tien National Park, a 70,000-hectare Unesco-rated biosphere boasting a startling variety of flora and fauna. Visitors can go bird-watching, take to hiking trails, overnight in a crocodile swamp and look for signs of Vietnam's rarest wildlife. The Con Dao Islands, a 40-minute flight from the city, offer an equally attractive getaway, albeit of a tropical island flavour. A former prison colony under the French and US regimes, Con Dao today boasts largely undiscovered beaches, empty coastal roads and a healthy ecosystem complete with coral reefs and colonies of green sea turtles - one of Vietnam's best places to see them in the wild. Other fine beaches stretch just east of the gruff oilman's town of Vung Tau. Although lacking the popularity of Mui Ne and Nha Trang further up the coast, there are some sparkling gems here - particularly Long Hai and Ho Tram - for those seeking a quiet beach holiday far from the madding crowd.

Endangered Indonesian coral reefs
chestnut501

Southeast Asia's biologically diverse coral reefs will disappear by the end of this century and wipe out coastal economies if climate change isn't addressed, conservation group WWF said in a report. The report, released to coincide with the World Ocean Conference in Manado, Sulawesi, warns that a do-nothing scenario will lead to a steady rise in sea temperatures and the death of the coral reefs.
