POPSWant to Stop Cancer? You Can, Experts Say "The data is pretty clear that we can make a significant drop in the cancer rate with these three changes," Collins said. "We can prevent about one-third of cancers with these changes. And if you add tobacco prevention, which reduces about 30 percent of cancers, over half of today's cancers could be prevented." Dr. Virginia Kaklamani, an oncologist who specializes in breast cancer at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, added that "increased weight increases the risk of cancer, and physical activity, regardless of weight, decreases breast cancer risk." The institute joined with the World Cancer Research Fund to release a report, Food, Nutrition, Physical Activity and the Prevention of Cancer: A Global Perspective, that was prepared by a team of international researchers who reviewed more than 7,000 studies on cancer.

POPSMore News on Vitamins and Minerals Last week I wrote about how new, major studies of certain vitamins showed no evidence that they prevented cancer or chronic disease. (That story is here: http://tinyurl.com/dcsk5u). But the results of two studies released this week were more promising where vitamin D and calcium are concerned. Vitamin and mineral research is very complicated -- with results weighed differently depending on the study methodology -- but as a consumer, it's to your advantage to know about the latest research and make decisions based on all of the information.

POPSCalifornia approves measure to cut diesel pollution So, the regulators get blamed for trying to save lives when the dirty fuel and lack of clean alternatives is at fault. This legislation didn't happen overnight, and stakeholders were aware that it was coming. There have been grants for retrofits for several years now, but the voluntary participation in cleaning up emissions wasn't happening, so out came the mighty pen. This legislation helps protect the health of truckers and dock workers because they are at higher risk of lung cancer from daily exposure.
