POPS"An outgoing, confident, people-loving dog that puts his heart & soul into everything he does."
More: "That includes climbing into your lap, digging out of an inadequately fenced yard, competing in canine agility trials or just following you around the house," Reynolds said. "Intelligence, determination, trainability and a good sense of humor are the hallmarks of the breed." Pit bulls may be crazy about people, but that's not always the case with other dogs. "They're terriers, and like all terriers, aggression towards other animals is not uncommon," she cautioned. "And like all dogs, pit bulls and their owners need training to become a good people/dog ambassador team." The reality is that even pit bulls from known fighting backgrounds, covered in fight scars, often turn out to be complete sweethearts -- even with other dogs. One of the best-known examples of this is Hector, a squirming, face-kissing bundle of love who is a certified therapy dog today, but started out his life as a fighter at Michael Vick's Bad Newz Kennels.

POPSThe Pain of Avoidance Why do we run from unpleasant thoughts and feelings? We willingly bear with the pain of an immunization shot because we "know" it's good for us and the pain will pass. Can we similarly deal with emotional pain the way we would the pain of a needle?

POPSTalking Snake Trumps Universal Life Energy Once again my Irony Meter is broken. The folks who believe in miracles find another form of claptrap unacceptable. Viewed from the safe ground of reality these internecine squabbles are actually quite comical.

POPSCollage...interrupted Thoughts on Creativity I LOVE this website! I have posted another page from her website on Art Journals. I clipped the pictures, and a few words, obviously I couldn't clip them all, and still have you be able to see it. I realize that sometimes creative people are just scattered, like I am. I also realize that every piece I make does NOT have to be "perfect" or mean anything at all to anyone but me. Collage is another way to express myself, journal, let feelings out....art therapy.

POPSNeed a Nap ? Try a Pod Their research has found that 40 million Americans suffer yearly from chronic sleep disorders, and an additional 20 million complain of occasional sleeping problem.. For some of us, it just means dark circles under our eyes and a desperate need for triple-caffeinated products. But the reality is that over the long haul, trouble with sleep can cause bigger problems. For some people, the answer might be to just buy some. Yes, sleep has now joined the ranks of those products we at one time thought we would never have to pay for, like water. Spas across the country have now added this new nap therapy to their offerings, so along with facials, waxing and massages, you can now grab some Z's for about a dollar a minute.

POPSNano RNA Delivery Novel delivery agents could mean a more targeted way to turn off disease genes. The MIT researchers, however, developed a way to make more than a thousand different delivery agents in parallel using a simple, one-step chemical process. And that allowed the team to quickly discover effective delivery molecules, including several that surprised the researchers. "We wouldn't have necessarily sat down and said, this is a structure that's going to work," says Daniel Anderson, a research associate at the David H. Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research at MIT. "It was only by making and testing over a thousand that we were able to get to that place."

POPSVirtual World Therapeautic For Addicts "His VR environments, developed with a company called Virtually Better, feature different scenarios that an addict may find challenging: a bar with imbibing patrons, a house party with guests drinking and smoking, a convenient store with cigarettes and alcoholic beverages within reach, a designated smoking section outside of a building or a room with an arguing couple. The environments use actors in each scene as opposed to computer-generated characters. In addition, the study added another layer of realism. A device sprayed the air with scents the participant may encounter in the various scenarios--cigarette smoke, alcoholic beverages, pizza or aromas associated with the outdoors." "This study shows us the value of using virtual reality as a tool for assessing and treating addictions. Future studies should explore the importance of environmental settings and other cues on cravings and relapse," Bordnick said.

POPSSHOCKED TO DEATH IN THE ARMS OF FREEDOM It seems more and more apparent that a group of destruction workers should be dispatched to the STATUE OF LIBERTY, with her declaration: "...those yearning to breathe free." Since it is an obvious lie (but then this country seems to be getting away with lies at every port) we should not promise what we cannot deliver. That was another time, another life, another AMERICA.

POPSCrying Wolf? Many people will look at this story and similar ones as proof that they somehow can't trust in science. Every day we're told of these scientists "changing their minds". Hormone therapy is bad, hormone therapy is ok. Polar bears are in danger, polar bears are doing fine. What's a person to believe? Remember people that it's not the role of science to proclaim dogma but to investigate reality and that is one complicated job. New facts are discovered every day which necessitate shifts in viewpoint. Contrary to public opinion, this is the strength of science instead of the weakness of science. We need to remind ourselves how our ability to predict the path of storms and the possibility of other natural occurring events is unimaginably complicated. Considering our track record so far I think we're doing pretty good.

POPSThe Quality School When I saw Bobby DelRay's clip of the The 7 Habits of Truly Miserable People, I had to clip another of Dr. Glasser's books. This is one of his books that teach practical, yet effective ways to treat yourself and others with respect. His ideas about education and schools have developed a group of schools that follow his philosophies. It's good for learning and for emotional health of children, students, and the entire education community.

POPSVirtual Reality to Help Troops deal with PTSD Well by making them relive their experiences over and over again, you are just solidifying another memory in their brain. I tend to disagree with this form of treatment, it might trigger other factors instead of helping. I assume that they are trying to "make" the experiences real as possible so that the troops with PTSD can make the experience in their mind less traumatizing... combat unless you've been there isn't something that is easy to explain to someone who hasn't, it makes and breaks people. huh.. should have thought about all of this before.

POPSTen cognitive distortions that mess you up David Burns is a pioneer in popularizing the cognitive-behavioral approach to mood therapy developed by Aaron Beck. As someone who has struggled on and off with crippling depression my whole life, I have found this list of "cognitive distortions" pretty useful in reframing certain elements of my thinking.

POPSHelp for the Self-Hating Homo Help embracing your self-hatred, that is. At least that's what NARTH's Dr. Nicolosi is offering Ted Haggard. The appropriate therapeutic response to self-abhorrence is affirmation, apparently. (i.e. "I hate myself." "Good. You should hate yourself.") Considering that Haggard has struggled unsuccessfully with this all his life, according to his letter, and that even his main man J.C. hasn't offered much help, It remains to be seen what Nicolosi can accomplish with Haggard. No worries though. The usual response when "ex-gay" therapy doesn't work is to say "You didn't pray hard enough." It's no sweat to add, "You didn't hate yourself enough.
