POPSWhy People Need Stories to Thrive As narrative is defined, people know it when they feel it. Whether fiction or nonfiction, a narrative engages its audience through psychological realism—recognizable emotions and believable interactions among characters.

POPSThe Audacity Hustle Exposed It's all part of the Audacity Hustle. Obama is running the most audacious campaign in American history. But the Hustle only works for the real suckers. His German Tiergarten speech with "Citizens of the world!" -- a direct echo of "Workers of the world!" from the Communist Manifesto of 1848. "We are the change we've been waiting for!" It's repeated in The Obama Hustle over and over again. But it's just Fidel Castro's slogan, "La Revolucion Somos Nosotros!" --- "We are the Revolution!" Most Americans don't know that Obama's Soviet Realism pics are just imitation Lenin posters. The same thing for The Decembrist rock band to echo the Russian Decemberist rebellion. That's why the Decembrist rockers play the Soviet National Anthem to start their concerts. Get it? The whole idea that Obama is a devout Christian is another fraud; he's a militant atheist, just like Bill Ayers and Jeremiah Wright.

POPSAldous Huxley - Select Quotes I usually dislike to clip quotes, but this web site was simply irresistible :-) And a last one... "Single-mindedness is all very well in cows or baboons; in an animal claiming to belong to the same species as Shakespeare it is simply disgraceful."

POPSas one ages, one becomes more realistic I've been voting for 20 years, and have come to realize that EVERY politician will be a disappointment. I no longer hope for the perfect representative, just for the least bad.

POPSGOP Braces to Become Double-Digit Losers Although I usually prefer to see more of a balance of party power in government, this year I totally support a thorough drubbing of the Republicans. The years they controlled both the executive and legislative branches have spelled disaster for the US. Their extremist orientation (really, now, Tom DeLay as House Majority Leader--please!) and devil-may-care stewardship of the economy will require at least a decade to undo. They deserve to be punished severely at the polls. Perhaps it will jolt them into a new and less crazy ideological orientation. In my view, if they were smart, they would look to the realism and pragmatism of a Sen. Chuck Hagel for a new model for the GOP.

POPSProphecy of retribution No this can't be true. The Jews of today try to shove down our throats that there wasn't anyone living in Palestine before the Jews arrived and everyone knows the chosen people do not lie.

POPSTradecraft Of Socialist Realism So the media know exactly how to use that kind of image on behalf of the Left. On the other hand, John McCain is already being depicted as a crippled dwarf by nice people like these. http://www.desertratdemocrat.com/archives/1-mccain_bush_hug.jpg Oregon was a Phony-Op, a staged photo-op. The Clintons were masters of the phony-op, in the close coordination with their Hollywood friends. That's how Bill kept his numbers up. So keep a sharp eye out for Phony-Ops. They will be coming at us as regular “news” features until Senator O wins. Then there'll be a lot more over the next four or eight years. But if John McCain wins you won’t see them, just as you haven't seen them with President Bush --- the most media-abused President since Ronald Reagan. Just watch out for that little lump in your throat, the one that tells you, "Haven't I seen this before in Lord of the Rings?" And whatever you do, don't swallow. "Marketing Of A President"

POPSLeaked Saudi View. 'Border dispute' Existing UN Resolutions Solution Prince Saud al-Faisal has been the discreet voice of Saudi Arabian diplomacy for more than 30 years, and he spoke with unchallenged authority at the recent meeting of the Quartet of Middle East peacemakers, giving what turned out to be a bleak assessment of the current negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians. The situation was "dire", he told the assembled dignitaries, including Condoleezza Rice, Tony Blair and Ban Ki-moon. "Many dangers loom. It seems we have reached a stage that I can only describe as a morass." Such pessimism is not big news, though Saud's gloomy remarks were made, characteristically, behind closed doors at London's Lancaster House. It is certainly hard to find anyone who harbours much hope that there is a way out of the current impasse. ... Guardian

POPSVirtual World Therapeautic For Addicts "His VR environments, developed with a company called Virtually Better, feature different scenarios that an addict may find challenging: a bar with imbibing patrons, a house party with guests drinking and smoking, a convenient store with cigarettes and alcoholic beverages within reach, a designated smoking section outside of a building or a room with an arguing couple. The environments use actors in each scene as opposed to computer-generated characters. In addition, the study added another layer of realism. A device sprayed the air with scents the participant may encounter in the various scenarios--cigarette smoke, alcoholic beverages, pizza or aromas associated with the outdoors." "This study shows us the value of using virtual reality as a tool for assessing and treating addictions. Future studies should explore the importance of environmental settings and other cues on cravings and relapse," Bordnick said.

POPSScience of Literature A sort of refraction of the two cultures debate of CP Snow. My own feeling is that the sort of excluded opposites prevalent in human cognition at all levels of social organisation are being (very slowly but highly significantly) eroded by emrging mindsets which are integrative and complex.

POPSFrom Climate Alarmism to Climate Realism As written by the President of the Czech Republic: What I see in Europe (and in the U.S. and other countries as well) is a powerful combination of irresponsibility, of wishful thinking, of implicit believing in some form of Malthusianism, of cynical approach of those who themselves are sufficiently well-off, together with the strong belief in the possibility of changing the economic nature of things through a radical political project.

POPSThe Press Soooooo Love McCain The media continue to cover the McCain presidential campaign of......2000. i have no idea how much more McCain has to reverse himself on before they realize that this man is not the same candidate that ran in 2000? Isn't his reversal on the torture bill enough for even a blind man to see clearly? I don't think in the end any of this will matter because McCain, in my opinion, is not going to be elected President of the United States. But a little realism, if not fairness, would be appreciated from our once outstanding media.

POPS The Presidential Primary Goes To Damascus But what can the US have in common with Syria, a key component of the axis of evil and the operational ally of Iran? As the NYS asks: Where is the sense of reality about who President Assad is and what his regime is all about? To suggest, as the Syrians report Mr. Brzezinski said, that they share some kind of common interest in respect of ‘stability’ is disingenuous…Where do they stand in respect of Syria — and why can't they bring themselves to explain what their advisers are doing in the capital of one of the countries most hostile to America and Israel? POPSPat Buchanan’s Magazine Endorses Ron Paul!! We are under no illusion that he has much chance of winning the GOP nomination this election cycle. Nevertheless we urge a vote for him. This campaign sends a signal to both parties that a significant number of Americans value their country’s great Constitution, that many conservatives reject wiretaps, waterboarding, and senseless wars. There is far more realism in Paul’s analysis than can be found in those Republicans who believe that Washington’s policy of borrowing billions from China to pay for the occupation of a growing number of countries is desirable, much less sustainable.

POPSMcCain as President Would be a Megalomaniac This article appeared in The American Conservative Magazine which just endorsed Ron Paul. The "maverick" McCain appears to have changed his positions in light of personal ambitions, which also smacks of Willard Milton Romney. This formerly tortured POW (something that psychologists testify of full well leads to a corresponding pathological abuse of others in return) could become a global meglomaniac that would make Bush look like a pacifist, hard as it is to imagine. The neocons, from the left originally, will love him.

POPSREALITY CHECK! There is a frightening new global trend of denial... Europeans think that they don't need to limit fishing... Car companies don't think they need to improve fuel economy standards... Bush thinks he can increase spending and cut taxes at the same time... Jingoists think we are winning the war in Iraq... Democrats think Hillary Clinton has enough experience to win an election... Polluters think that Global Warming won't really happen... Evangelicals think Jesus is coming back soon... Fundamentalists think they can win the war against modernity... The truth is: we're stuck with this world. The rules DO apply. No free passes. You have to face the music sometime. We must choose realism over comfortable delusion. Unfortunately, for now, wistful thinking will rule the day until we let it all collapse around us. Then we'll stand there scratching our heads saying: How could this happen?

POPSCome See The REAL New China! Jia Zhangke looks at what's really there, rather than what he wants to see. That's something more people should do. On the one hand, he doesn't flatter global capitalism, but he's not blind to the essential progress that China has made either. China's underground auteur may well be a better anthropologist than entertainer. Although his movies sometimes dwell on the mundane to the point of being unwatchable, they are invaluable documents on the true nature of China's modernization. So few people understand what the "New China" is, but it's all here for anyone who bothers to look. He is the definitive realist of his generation, and a strikingly insightful observer of the human condition. His quotes throughout the article are all gems, but too numerous to clip.
