Out With the Old, In With the Raw
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  9-11-2009
In general, if you are craving crap you are likely to be deficient in some area of nutrition. Eating enough greens will solve this problem. Most smoothie bars are serving up so much sugar you may as well be at a Dairy Queen. There are tons of green smoothie recipes online and in books like Green for Life by Victoria Boutenko to help you keep it fresh in the kitch. Get your green smoothie in often and feel the difference. Here’s one from the article: Ghetto Green Smoothie • Fresh spinach • Bananas • Water Fill your blender up ¾ full with the fresh spinach. Add two bananas and just enough water to get it to blend down (the idea is to get as much greens in while maintaining your taste preference). Blend and taste. Too sweet? Add more greens. Too swampy? Add more bananas. You can also add ice or use frozen bananas for a frostier blend. More nutritional goodness at the site.

Five Foods You Shouldn't Eat Raw
foxyarse
by foxyarse  7-25-2009    4
 4. Beef and pork: Avoiding raw meat is a no-brainer, until you see it on the menu with an appetizing name like tartare or carpaccio. There’s a long list of diseases you could get from raw meat, so I’ll mention only one: neurocysticercosis, a parasite from undercooked pork that crawls from your intestine up to your brain, where it can live for years and cause seizures. …and finally, no “Everybody Panic!” list is complete without at least one way you might inadvertently kill your child: 5. Honey: Honey contains bacterial spores that cause botulism, a disease that’s usually fatal if untreated. While adults and children have high stomach acid levels that kill the spores in honey, infants do not. Children less than a year old should not eat honey.

"Good Nutrition in a Nutshell"
kris_tea
by kris_tea  6-22-2009    2
These are good guidelines to follow. However, I struggle with everyone of them. I'm not a huge advocate for organic or raw living but I do think it is probably healthier to limit the amount of man altered foods in our diet.

Is Moldy Cheese Safe to Eat?
Moliticon
by Moliticon  3-1-2009
Continuing: To prevent mold growth on cheese, follow these tips: * Keep cheese and cheese dishes covered with plastic wrap. * Always refrigerate cheese. Don't allow cheese to sit at room temperature for longer than two hours. Also, don't eat cheese made from unpasteurized (raw) milk. Raw milk and cheeses may contain harmful bacteria and aren't safe to eat, drink or use in cooking. Many sources actually recommend aluminum foil over plastic wrap to retard mold growth more effectively. There is a nice chart in this article with guidelines for specific cheeses.

Food Safety Program Needs Restructuring
spirithiker
by spirithiker  2-24-2009
The Dept of Agriculture should inspect anything grown or raised on a farm, domestic and imported. The FDA should cover everything else that enters the human body (drugs, etc) domestic and imported. They need to agree on a schedule of inspections and they both need the ability to shutdown operations if a threat is discovered. It seems reasonable that if any manufacturer has to face the possibility of a shutdown (cutting into their profits) then it would be in their best interest to ensure their product is safe. Raw food inspections covered by USDA, this covers growers. Processed foods covered by FDA, this covers processors. An additional safety net would be provided by the health department to inspect facilities and ensure workers are following safe food-handling procedures. Did I leave anything out? We don’t need another bureaucratic agency to add to the nightmare, just shore up practices already in place. It doesn’t matter how old a law is, as long as it works.
