POPS How The Stealth F/A-22 Raptor Works
The F/A-22 is the world's first stealth air-to-air fighter, designed to be unseen at long range and deadly in close-in air combat. It can also strike ground targets with precision accuracy. maneuverability in the air. Radar works by sending radio waves out from an antenna and collecting the waves that bounce back from any objects. On a radar screen in an aircraft or in a ground-based radar station, an airplane appears as a blip. The larger the aircraft, the larger the blip appears on the screen. Aircraft designers have worked for years to minimize the radar signature of an aircraft. If the radio waves are deflected or absorbed so they don't return to the radar antenna, then the airplane is invisible or could be mistaken for a flock of birds or other non-threatening object. Aircraft designers use a jumble of curved surfaces and other design tricks to deflect radar waves in unexpected patterns. Planes are painted with thick paint that can absorb radar waves instead of reflect th

POPSHouse Liberals Want About $60 Billion In Defense Spending Cuts But McCain could feel some discomfort because his campaign views Hispanics as a crucial voting bloc. His support for shifting emphasis from defense to social programs could help him appeal to that group. The calls of liberal groups and lawmakers come at a particularly awkward time for Obama. During a speech to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee Wednesday, Obama proposed sanctions on Iran that analysts viewed as far tougher than what he suggested before. Now Obama must balance tough talk on national security with the desires of many Democrats to slim American military power. Specifically, they want to steer money away from what they call “Cold War-era” weapons systems, such as the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. Liberals have also called for cuts to the ballistic missile defense program, the F/A-22 Raptor, the V-22 Osprey and the DDG 1000 Zumwalt Class Destroyer.

POPSMysterious shaking rattles Central Coast this morning "Military aircraft do fly through the area frequently. Even though some do reach supersonic speeds, like the F-22, a low flying aircraft not going at that speed could have also caused minor shaking. A spokesman from Edwards Air Force Base says right now, conditions are ideal to hear a sonic boom or any noise coming from large aircraft. The spokesman adds, winds coming in off the ocean help to carry that sound.
