POPSMcCain's Elitist Response to Military Donor Story But aside from the fact that the McCain campaign lied is confused, does anyone catch a whiff of elitism here? Is support from within the ranks somehow more credible if it comes in the form of a general officer or an admiral? If so, that would be strange. . .since flag officers aren't the ones fighting the insurgencies in Iraq or Afghanistan. This comes as no surprise--and it reinforces the message: It's clear that McCain values the opinions of flashier, high-ranking, inside-the-wire types over the views of the grunts, the medics, and the lieutenants who wade waist-deep through the muck and blood and shrapnel of insurgency, day in and day out. And while he may easily dismiss the actual combatants of these wars in a moment of political self-defense, those same troops will not so easily forget his bellicosity, his foreign policy ignorance, and his general lack of respect for them when it comes time to vote in November.

POPS Newly Released Federal Documents Reveals Julia Child Among Spies
They studied military plans, created propaganda, infiltrated enemy ranks and stirred resistance among foreign troops. Among the more than 35,000 OSS personnel files are applications, commendations and handwritten notes identifying young recruits who, like Child, Goldberg and Berg, earned greater acclaim in other fields — Arthur Schlesinger Jr., a historian and special assistant to President Kennedy; Sterling Hayden, a film and television actor whose work included a role in "The Godfather"; and Thomas Braden, an author whose "Eight Is Enough" book inspired the 1970s television series. Other notables identified in the files include John Hemingway, son of author Ernest Hemingway; Quentin and Kermit Roosevelt, sons of President Theodore Roosevelt, and Miles Copeland, father of Stewart Copeland, drummer for the band The Police. The release of the OSS personnel files uncloaks one of the last secrets from the short-lived wartime intelligence agency.

POPSNeed a Nap ? Try a Pod Their research has found that 40 million Americans suffer yearly from chronic sleep disorders, and an additional 20 million complain of occasional sleeping problem.. For some of us, it just means dark circles under our eyes and a desperate need for triple-caffeinated products. But the reality is that over the long haul, trouble with sleep can cause bigger problems. For some people, the answer might be to just buy some. Yes, sleep has now joined the ranks of those products we at one time thought we would never have to pay for, like water. Spas across the country have now added this new nap therapy to their offerings, so along with facials, waxing and massages, you can now grab some Z's for about a dollar a minute.

POPSBritish crime lords rule £40 billion underworld “British gangs are quite unlike the Italian Mafia model or the Turkish groups,” he said. “There are no set ranks, rules and structures. They are more fluid, flexible and opportunist.” Many foreign gangs active in Britain are based overseas and exploit the 11,000-mile coastline and security weaknesses at sea ports to smuggle drugs, guns and counterfeit goods into the country. Much of the media coverage of gangs has concentrated on turf wars and feuds, but serious criminal activity is focused on making money.

POPSJimmy Carter on GTMO To stay the hand of vengeance.....Not Bush and Co. Vengeance and weapons are the only, well oil, thing on their mind. But perhaps just as it happened to Hitler: The demise may come out of their own ranks. We need a Stauffenberg who could change history.

POPSNewsweek: Education system is broken As a former NYC teaching fellow (similar program to Teach for America), I agree: 1. The educational system is broken. 2. The impact of an uneducated populace cannot be underestimated. However, I strongly disagree that teachers are the single most important factor in student achievement. As a teacher in a crisis school (and now a parent), I strongly believe that PARENTS are the single most important factor in student achievement. Quality teachers ARE correlated with student achievement, because the best teachers find the highest job satisfaction in working with families that embrace the responsibility of learning. Schools with responsible, engaged parents CAN and do attract and retain good teachers. The key to solving the educational crisis is to engage and equip parents LONG before their children reach school age, since the first 5 years are the most critical years of development. For one creative way to do just that, check out tumblon.com.

POPSScum destroy demonstration's message.
I watched the debate, to an empty Westminster chamber, when several opposition MP's raised the point with the Deputy Speaker. I have waited for a response, scouring the London papers for report, but I found none. Typical of such occasions, being a Thursday and the pub in the Village -highly subsidised by the tax payer - probably the place to confer with your legal advisor about your dubious expenses - neither Joan Humble or Gordon Marsden were present. What great advertisement for two MP's who are supposed to represent the view and needs of veterans if they cannot support the fighting troop. You may have read that I know the wars out east to be illegal. That does not prevent me from supporting the troops 100% and a little more. I honestly believe that all those MP's who voted for these conflicts should be tried for War Crimes. If a half-wit like me recognised obfuscation with the dubious documents and the WMD, what does it say about out highly informed politicians? For the demo

POPSIslamic Iran's Effort To Wipe Out Dissent - Twenty-Nine Executed In One Day
IRAN HIDING UNCONTROLLED AIDS EPIDEMIC, WHILE EXECUTING DOZENS AT A TIME. Societal structure and conditions lead to incredibly greater infection by AIDS in the Islamic Iran population (similar to some African nations) because one third of Islamic Iran's population is drug addicted and shares needles. A far higher statistic than the government wants to admit and is (as usual) suppressing the information and the reliable source the two medical brothers provided in their expert and experienced capacity. Remember, one third of 70 million residents in Islamic Iran means OVER 20 MILLION addicted people, who for whatever reasons are vulnerable to contracting and transmitting AIDS and other infectious diseases. Islamic Iran has the highest proportion of Heroin addicts to population of any country in the world. pederasty definition ▸ noun: sexual relations between a man and a boy (usually anal intercourse with the boy as a passive partner)

POPSThe putsch that imperiled America "Others have been less scrupulous for reasons that do them even less credit than ideological fanaticism. Take, for example, former Pentagon general counsel William J. Haynes II. In a sworn statement, Air Force Col. Morris Davis -- the former top prosecutor in the Office of Military Commissions -- says he resigned after being pressured by Haynes to move forward with politically "sexy" prosecutions even though Morris believed the evidence against the defendants had been obtained by torture. Davis said he also told Haynes that a few acquittals at Guantanamo, if warranted, would send a message that the commissions sitting there were fair, just as the not-guilty verdicts against some Nazi defendants had done for the Nuremberg trials. Haynes' response was emphatic, according to Morris: "We can't have acquittals! We've got to have convictions! ... If we've been holding these guys for so long, how can we explain letting them get off?""

POPSFrom Fallujah To Diyala, The Target Has Shifted As I have recently mentioned, many of the Sunni Awakening groups are holding out for more money, and threatening to rejoin the ranks of their previous insurgent groups, including AQI and the 1920's Revolutionary Brigade. Our own Alex Horton wrote an insightful post about this here. http://armyofdude.blogspot.com/2008/07/enemies-with-benefits.html It seems now that this unrest may be a sign of more to come in Diyala. The province is predominantly Arab Sunni but sizeable communities of Sunni Kurds and Arab and Kurdish Shiites live there.
