The Seasoned Flag
missjackson
by missjackson  Yesterday 3:18 PM
cont': There underneath the broken toys, the seasoned flag did lay. A curious man stopped by, before the trash machine arrived, What is that under the toys? Can this flag be revived? Attached to the cord from Old Glory’s top, an eagle caught his eye, The bird and the flag permanently attached, as friends they would survive. The man looked them over with a tear in his eye, How could anyone toss out such a symbol of life? “A new home awaits you,” Old Glory was told, As the man shook off dirt and did carefully fold. Once home, the flag safe, the man told his wife, Of the story of finding this symbol of life. They cried as they thought of how proudly it waved, At the home of another and what joy that it gave. They found the right place to display this seasoned one, Now Old Glory stands tall, gently waving in the sun.

Hurricane Dolly Bears Down on Texas
Wisco
by Wisco  7-23-2008    9
Dolly is described as a "slow-moving" storm, meaning that there may be more damage than would normally be expected from a Category 2, mostly in the form of flooding. LiveScience.com : Flooding, which can result from both torrential rains and the ocean surf a storm can push ashore, is what officials in Texas were most concerned about after Dolly made landfall as a Category 2 hurricane at 9 am EDT on Wednesday. Residents of the Rio Grande Valley have been warned of potential severe flooding and possible levee breaks. The National Hurricane Center predicted that Dolly could drop a total of 6 to 10 inches (15 to 25 centimeters) of rainfall in the next few days, with some isolated spots potentially getting soaked by up to 15 inches.

Did the McCain Campaign Plant a False Story?
DanaGarrett

oldest living things on earth
ofcapri
by ofcapri  7-19-2008    1
Some of the oldest living things on earth are Bristlecone pine trees, some of which can be found in the White Mountains of California. Many of them are over four thousand years old. Many of the trees living today were seedlings when the pyramids were being constructed, and mature trees in the time of Christ. These trees are ancient! Go 2 source 4 more info.

Green "permeable" pavement
egsnyder
by egsnyder  7-14-2008
Interesting item on "How Stuff Works" today. In the good old pre-pavement days, all that rainwater that now runs off roads, driveways, parking lots, etc. used to just soak into the ground. There is also a "how to" piece on Building Your Own Green Driveway included.... Building Your Own Green Driveway ============================ Are you a do-it-yourselfer with a green thumb? With the proper tools and know-how, you can make your own green driveway for around $1,200. First, grade the site and install a catch basin for drainage. Dig a bed and fill it with crushed gravel. Buy some plastic grass pavers (recycled, of course) and lay them down on your driveway base. Fill the pavers with concrete sand. Compact the pavers carefully and then roll down some sod and irrigate. In a few weeks, you'll have a grassy area strong enough to hold the weight of your car .

The Real-Life '24'
debbyski
by debbyski  7-13-2008    1
"We are once again distracted and unprepared while the Taliban and bin Laden’s minions multiply in Afghanistan and Pakistan. This, no less than the defiling of the Constitution, is the legacy of an administration that not merely rationalized the immorality of torture but shackled our national security to the absurdity that torture could easily fix the terrorist threat. That’s why the Bush White House’s corruption in the end surpasses Nixon’s. We can no longer take cold comfort in the Watergate maxim that the cover-up was worse than the crime. This time the crime is worse than the cover-up, and the punishment could rain down on us all."

This is my "Stalker Theory of Romantic Movies"!
Sweeneybird
by Sweeneybird  7-11-2008
I have thought for years that a lot of the mildly inappropriate stalker-y behavior that some guys exhibit can be blamed on stalking disguised as romance in movies. Singing in the Rain? Gene Kelly stalks Debbie Reynolds. You've Got Mail? Please, don't get me started. Guys and Dolls? Marlon Brando MUST know better than Jean Simmons what she wants/needs! Cinderella? Yeah, that's normal behavior - if she didn't give you her name, go door to door until you find her. /rant.
