POPSMcCain's Chilling Dance With the Dark Side
Now, I'm not saying that it's wrong to ask questions about Obama's relationship, such as it was, with Bill Ayers. Or with Tony Rezko or with Rev. Jeremiah Wright. Just as it wouldn't be inappropriate to raise questions about McCain's association with G. Gordon Liddy, the convicted Watergate burglar whose colorful history includes telling listeners to his radio show in 1994 to shoot federal agents in the head. When McCain went on Liddy's radio show in November 2007, he told Liddy, "I'm proud of you, I'm proud of your family... It's always a pleasure for me to come on your program, Gordon, and congratulations on your continued success and adherence to the principles and philosophies that keep our nation great." The candidates' associations with these people, and their responses to questions about them, give you a view into their judgment. But at a time of great economic uncertainty -- so uncertain that the smartest people in the world are scratching their heads about what to do -- whi

POPSI'll Take Hope Over Fear and Loathing, Thank You Very Much I am by training a historian. My focus of study has been 20th century Europe and the rise of fascism. The "othering' taking place on the right and from the Republican candidates themselves is horrifying to behold. Who's to blame for the economic crisis? Barney Frank (faggot!), ACORN (niggers!), Barack Hussein Obama (half-breed Muslim!). I see it on the internet, I see it on TV, I see it in newspapers, I see it here on ClipMarks: race-baiting, fear-mongering, scapegoating. Enough! Not here! Not now! Not ever again! If I may quote Obama, "Not this time!

POPSMcCain's Double Standard If McCain wants to bash Obama for his occasional appearances on the same board with Ayers, a 1970's political activist who Obama disclaims friendship with, then he needs to examine his admitted long-time friendship to a government operative who was in the thick of the biggest political scandal in American history - and one of the greatest threats to the rule of law, G. Gordon Liddy. Both Ayers and Liddy say they have no regrets for what they did. Both served prison terms for their actions. Liddy, a radio talk show host, gives the advice: "if the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms comes to disarm you, resist them with arms. Go for a head shot, they're going to be wearing bulletproof vests. Kill the sons of bitches." Ayers, since imprisonment, has spent his time helping the poor and disadvantaged. McCain thinks Obama should apologize for associating with a criminal extremist. To which Obama might reply: After you.

POPSJohn McCain's Terrorist Ties Liddy also said he should have recommended shots to the groin instead of the head. If that wasn't enough to inflame any nut cases, he mentioned labeling targets "Bill" and "Hillary" when he practiced shooting. Given Liddy's record, it's hard to see why McCain would touch him with a 10-foot pole. On the contrary, he should be returning his donations and shunning his show. Yet the senator shows no qualms about associating with Liddy -- or celebrating his service to their common cause. How does McCain explain his howling hypocrisy on the subject? He doesn't. I made repeated inquiries to his campaign aides, which they refused to acknowledge, much less answer. On this topic, the pilot of the Straight Talk Express would rather stay parked in the garage. That's an odd policy for someone who is so forthright about his rival's responsibility. McCain thinks Obama should apologize for associating with a criminal extremist. To which Obama might reply: After you.

POPS"Maverick" McCain Supports Pork-Stuffed Bailout Bill McCain just contradicted his entire "reform" message. He had opportunity to lead the way, against Big Interest. But instead he supported it, under the plea of "necessity" of course. There was a radio talk show that did an excellent job on this today, but it was new to me and I could not find it on the web. The former republican (a conservative or libertarian host), complete with soundbites, ripped McCain to shreds, called him "an idiot". He could have won the election (and saved Main Street) by voting against it, and proved that he is against pork bills, against Big Interests, and a "maverick" for "reform", but did not! (If anyone knows the radio talk show and heard it, please post it in a comment. It was the best commentary on this anywhere).

POPSCollective village offers new hope to Russian orphans In our mission congregation at Klipfontein View one woman has been trained in caring for abandoned children, of whom there are plenty in the vicinity, and it would be good to have something like Kitezh village... unfortunately there isn't enough money to set it up.

POPSPelosi's Game "May I vote NO?" Speaker's Answer "Yes, You May" the Speaker's answer to Dems was "Yes, you may!" Ignoring all of the immense power to persuade that inheres in the position of Speaker of the House, Speaker Pelosi wouldn't even offer (or threaten to withhold) so much as a choice Capitol parking spot to make up the 12-vote margin between victory and defeat of H.R. 3997, the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008. Speaking on John Gibson's radio show later in the day, however, Karl Rove ran through, by name and often by committee or subcommittee chairmanship, the many, many Democratic members of the House whom Speaker Pelosi and the House Democratic leadership expressly authorized to vote against the economic stabilization bill.

POPSThe House Sides with Main St: "No Deal" to Banksters! In this real game of "Deal or No Deal" the American taxpayer finally won a round against the financial heavyweights. While idiots in the House and talk radio (and the McCain campaign) tried to make this a partisan issue, Bloomberg tallies here that 40% of Democrats and 67% of Republicans combined together to narrowly defeat the Fed's bill that Bush supported. THAT IS CALLED A BI-PARTISAN DEFEAT OF THE BILL THAT AMERICANS IN THE MAJORITY TOLD CONGRESS THEY HATED! Conservative talk show host Michael Savage tonight (who has been railing against Bush as a fiscal socialist and the Wall Street banksters as crooks) underscored that he was right that Americans wanted "no deal" while talk show corporate sycophants (he let them have it by name)--i.e. Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and Bill O'Reilly--who supported the bailout were wrong. The defeat of this irresponsible bill was not based upon Partisanship, but good Principle.

POPSReport: McCain Aides Say Palin is 'Clueless' Take this one with a grain of salt; not because it comes from a lefty talker, but because it may come from Team McCain. If this gets some play, Palin does the debate, and walks off the stage without getting her head stuck in the podium, everyone will say they're surprised at how well she did. Bush called this "the soft bigotry of low expectations," McCain probably calls it "polishing a turd."

POPSHate From Right-Wing Talk Radio Shows I could never understand why anyone would want to listen to the hateful shows on right-wing talk radio. Especially, those who proclaim that their religion keeps them on the straight and narrow. Listening to the disgusting rhetoric these Shock Jockeys spew forth creates barbarity in those who refuse to think... When minds are so full of the nonsense from the right-wing creeps, who's only objective is to make money and control the masses, they tend to wreck havoc upon the innocent. (case-in-point, the pathetic nut who went on a shooting rampage at the UU church in TN.) We are all in the same boat. We love and want peace so why look upon each other as though we are just pockets of vermin. Haven't we had enough HATE? I guess there are some who would answer NO, because they live for aversion. Here's a little advice for DITTO-HEADS, you can live in peace, it's really quite simple, just turn your damn radios off and have a nice day. :)

POPSAll Hail Our Glorious Leader! Note: The official Obama campaign website is doing this. They're screaming about McCain running the sleaziest campaign ever, while they're actively trying to stifle dissent against Obama. Not refuting it; not ridiculing it; not even engaging with it. Trying to keep it from being said at all. If this is like last time, they won't even send a campaign rep to the show, which is just down the street from their HQ. No, just send in the phone zombies. And they're getting away with this. I guess because if you have a problem with it, you're a racist? I've got my Amazon Kindle right here and I just downloaded Freddoso's book. While I still can.

POPSThe Left's Fierce Hostility to Sarah Palin's Fecundity Every woman has the "right to choose" her own path through life, but it's a lazy assumption to take for granted that most Americans find Sarah Palin's choices as freakish as our metropolitan elites do. What was it the feminists used to say? "You can have it all." Sarah Palin is a mom, and the first female governor of her state. But the enforcers at the National Organization of Women dismiss her as "more a conservative man than she is a woman". Golly. These days, NOW seems to have as narrow and proscriptive a view of what women are permitted to be as any old 1950s sitcom dad.

POPSGirl to auction virginity on radio show The girl, who already has a bachelor's degree in women's studies at Sacramento State, wants to study further for a master's in marriage and family therapy. An increasing number of female students are resorting to prostitution or other jobs in sex industry to pay rising university tuition fees, a study by Kingston University in UK suggested. In a survey that asked 130 students whether they knew any friends involved in the sex industry, one in 10 said they knew of students who had stripped, lapdanced or worked at massage parlours and escort agencies to support themselves.

POPSRon Paul Will be on Presidential Ballot Paul's name on the ballot could siphon votes from Republican presidential candidate John McCain. In Montana’s June 3 primary, Paul took 20,606 votes, well short of McCain’s 72,791, but still a sizeable chunk of Republican voters. An additional 2,333 Montanans voted for neither, choosing Republican “no preference.” Martin said he would not be concerned if putting Paul on the ballot harmed McCain's candidacy. "If it would affect that, it wouldn't bother us too much," Martin added. "We wanted to put the best candidate that was out there on the ballot."

POPSVideo: Why Hasn't Obama Fired Howard Gutman? "So you are judging her parenting skills," Ingraham said. "You're saying you don't think she's a good parent for doing this job." "I'm saying the proper criticism is not that it's a woman or man – it doesn't matter whether it's Todd or Sarah," Gutman said. Gutman explicitly goes to great lengths to avoid offending women voters. He is obviously more afraid of vanquished opponent Hillary and her PUMAs than his own boss, Barack Obama: Obama should have fired Howard Gutman immediately for his insubordination, instead he has a spokesman issue a typically flaccid warning: Obama spokesman Bill Burton, asked to respond to Gutman's remarks, said "Obviously these comments do not reflect our frequently stated views that families of the candidates should be off limits." Gutman directly challenged the leadership of Obama and gets away scott free with an emailed apology to a reporter Obama fails yet another mind-boggling simple test of his authority.
