Science, faith and everyday miracles
einbar
by einbar  8-15-2008    1
"An Einstein letter that sold at an auction in May leaves little doubt of his atheism. "The word God is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weaknesses, the Bible a collection of honorable, but still primitive legends which are nevertheless pretty childish," he wrote in 1954, a year before his death." "And yet Einstein is famous for a number of teasingly "spiritual" quotations - "I cannot believe that God plays dice with the cosmos," for one - that suggest he is a theist. A growing body of Einsteinologists believes the physicist was using such God language metaphorically to express a human impulse for finding meaning and comfort in the clock-like workings of the universe. As he wrote in 1931:"

Courtroom Quotations

The following quotations are taken from official court records across the nation, showing how funny and embarrassing it is that recorders operate at all times in courts of law, so that even the slightest inadvertence is preserved for posterity.

The individual we think of today was actually born in the Renaissance.
balthazarus
by balthazarus  7-20-2008
some more quotations: Open Source Democracy—which I wrote about a decade ago—is not simply a way to get candidates elected to office. It is a collective reprogramming of the social software, a disengagement from the myths through which we abdicate responsibility, and a reclamation of our role as citizens who participate in the creation of the society in which we want to live. This is not personal democracy at all, but a collective and participatory democracy where we finally accept our roles as the fully literate and engaged adults who can make this happen. " i like it. One should be active in how he feels life should be.

Here's Our New Policy On AP Stories: They're Banned
merrie
by merrie  6-22-2008    1
So here’s our new policy on A.P. stories: they don’t exist. We don’t see them, we don’t quote them, we don’t link to them. They’re banned until they abandon this new strategy, and I encourage others to do the same until they back down from these ridiculous attempts to stop the spread of information around the Internet. Those that disregard the guidelines risk being sued by the A.P., despite the fact that such use may fall under the concept of fair use.

So, are you actually DOING anything besides saying "there's nothing you can do about it"?
Lexica
by Lexica  6-9-2008    1
I find I'm developing an increasing allergy to the attitude that "there's nothing you can do about it; the people in charge won't listen to you; you might as well give up". If that's your attitude, kindly step to the side so the people who DO think it's worth making an effort can keep working to make a difference, however small it may be.
