Porridge: A Good Source of Energy For Your Body & Your Factory
urbanlife
by urbanlife  4-7-2008    2
A FIFE factory is to become one of Scotland’s greenest when it begins generating all its own energy from oat husks. Quaker, which produces Scott’s Porage Oats at its Uthrogle Mills plant near Cupar, is to invest £6 million in a combined heat and power biomass boiler which will make it carbon neutral. The husks, removed from the oats during the milling process, will provide 9,709 MWhrs of electricity and 10,902 MWhrs of steam a year, reducing its emissions by 9,000 tonnes a year. “This innovative approach by Quaker to cut carbon emissions through investment in new low carbon technology will be a powerful signal to other businesses that reducing carbon emissions and looking for sustainable energy sources makes business sense.”

Sara Bard Field (1882-1974): Poet and Suffragist
GeDeGe
by GeDeGe  3-19-2008    1
Sara Bard Field A writer and propagandist but also a poet, she was a woman of exceptional character. From Quaker origins, at the age of 18 she married a minister and went with him to live in Burma. When they saw the poverty and diseases in Rangoon, they both became Socialists. It was Clarence Darrow who introduced Sara to Charles Erskine Wood in 1918. For him she left her husband and they eventually married and lived a fulfilling life to the end. They were both of them radical intellectuals, interested in living a good life, surrounded by artists, but also extremely generous and compassionate. Sara worked for ten years as a Suffragette and was responsible for the organisation of the College of Equal Suffrage, with Alice Paul. powys-lannion.net "SARA AND ERSKINE, AN AMERICAN ROMANCE", a biography by Dona Munker

Call me naive, but I didn't even think loyalty oaths still existed in 2008. Does anyone really believe that they do any good? This story sounds like some kind of liberal hoax, but apparently it really happened.

Quaker Earth Care Witness/religion
DouglasDirk
by DouglasDirk  11-29-2007
Along my path orf finding spirituality, I believe in this organization and faith. Again, I am an Eclectic Christian and am not bound to one organized religion. I believe in spirituality, which for me includes The United Church Of Christ, Liberal Quakerism, Orthodox Quakerism, mystisism and earth based reverance that celebrates God's creation. The use of crystals and other pagan / new age methods is not outside my life's journey. Christ abhored strict adherance to the customary Jewish Law. All are now free!

An interview with the man behind the film version of "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory." I never knew the movie was funded by the Quaker Oats Co. as part of a product tie-in that never materialized. Stuart describes such arcana as the difficulties of working with Oompa-Loompas and how to keep a chocolate river from smelling bad.

Nintendo Wii Hardware Revision 'Not Out of the Question

Today we are pleased to present our full E3 interview with Nintendo of America's George Harrison, SVP of Marketing and Corporate Communications. Harrison talks about the sales and marketing move, acknowledges that Nintendo may "lose some purists" while attempting to broaden the audience, and he doesn't rule out a Wii revision. That and much more inside...

my tahoe ad
cbrown1
by cbrown1  5-3-2007
As part of General Motor's recent Tahoe ad competition, I made this spoof commercial to bring home to people that we are all responsible in some way in our daily lives for the war in Iraq, environmental degradation, etc...SUV drivers perhaps more than others, but we're all responsible. Here's John Woolman's quote to which I allude at the end: "May we look upon our treasures and the furniture of our houses and the garments in which we array ourselves and try whether the seeds of war have any nourishment in these our possessions, or not." (John Woolman was an 18th century Quaker who traveled across the American colonies advocating against conscription, military taxation, and especially slavery.) We won't have peace in the world until we realize our own complicity in war and work to eliminate it. PEACE NOW! carol
